HerrKaLeu got a reaction from Middcore in Help me sell my cheap PCs that are not selling
    +1
Except the GPU, the  specs are lower than the old PCs I use just for Media PC to watch YT, Netflix on TV. If the GPU can do 4K, that is maybe what it could do.

Someone who just browses and does some Word etc. could use it. Definitely not worth $250. And this is a PC for a noob. So any OS should be fully functional (activated). Someone smart enough to find a cheap key and activate, also is smart enough to see this system is not worth much.

Hope you didn't pay actual $ for the hardware. Much is probably more a case for electronic recycling. If one part fails, you will have a hard time finding cheap repair parts for such old standard (DDR3 etc.) and a single part failure basically will mean they need to upgrade a lot. Of course, the target audience won't have that knowledge.

And don't advertise hardware as "gaming" anything if it can't play anything remotely modern. That is mis-leading at best.

If you find people needing replacement parts, you could part it out. but honestly, a small HDD, small SSD etc. are pretty much worthless and you have a hard time giving it away for free. No one wants to put valuable data on a used drive with unknown longevity. And outside someone just googling, they are too small.

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from Hunteil in Suggestion Idea: Smart Home Bathroom exhaust fan speaker? Wait what?
Nothing smart about this. If you are handy, you could take a Bluetooth speaker and insert it in a fan. Besides the lack of a reason to do that, I see at least these problems:
    - if your BT speaker stops working (i.e. doesn't support future BT standards etc.) you need to replace the fan that would have lasted 30 years.
    - you need to somehow turn off the speaker or find a way to not connect to your phone when you use other BT devices or someone else uses the bathroom and doesn't want to listen to your music while you are next door.
    - instead of a good fan (silent etc.) and a good BT speaker (sound, good BT connection), you get a cheap fan and a cheap speaker.

I use BT headphones all day long inc. the bathroom. Mainly because my family doesn't want to listen to my podcasts. If I want to listen to louder music while under the shower, I have a separate battery-BT speaker I can carry with me. That one I also can carry to my garage etc. I really don't see how that fan-speaker is better. Especially in a room I only spend 1% of my time.

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from ahmhaf in mail-in-rebate
When I compare prices, I never take a mail-in rebate into account. So if item A cost $100 and has a $10 mail in discount, I rather buy item B at $95.
It is just a bonus to get the rebate at all to the already lowest price.

IME, it takes them forever to honor the rebate, you have to mail it in and not forget. And the rebate may not be cash, but just some voucher. Or the company can just "lose" the rebate. Some of the rebates say it can take many months, and it often does. By that time I already forgot about it and may not even fight for it if they "forget" to send it. and it is a way for the manufacturer to get my address etc.

I don't like discounts at all since they are scammy. Just reduce the price instead of inflating and then taking a % off. Discounts are just not an honest way to make inflated prices look lower.

I get the fruatration, but you were being a total Karen there. I used to work customer service for a major telecom and if something is out of stock, there is literally nothing a CSR can do about that.

Now personally, I wouldn't have offered you the $10 because it comes off as condescending. Had an issue with a Prime Day order with the cart and lost out hundreds of savings. Called CS and got offered a similar $10 gift card. That actually made me more angry and I declined before hanging up on them.

Not saying you're not allowed to be angry. I 100% get where you are coming from. But as someone who has done support for half a decade, you see things from both sides. First rep was doing standard protocol and in all honestly, may not have even been a tech enthusiast to know how scarce those GPUs are. The second also didn't do anything wrong. I've experienced atrocious support before and that is not what you posted. This boils down to a first world problem and taking out anger on people just doing their job.

I have to defend Newegg here. If they don't have the item in question, a refund really is the only thing they CAN do. Do you want to have them build a GPU out of clay? They are not a manufacturer, they are just a middle-person. And it seems they processed the RMA with no hassle.

Only real complaint is that it seems to have been an open box or something. Be glad they didn't force you to buy their Gigabyte PSU along with your shuffle.

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from da na in Concerns about laptop temperature
Laptops don't have good cooling due to space limitations. You probably hear the fan(s) spinning up. they are OK for short bursts of power, but for endured gaming, they get hot. I'm sure some manufacturers are better than others, but this an inherent problem.

Check if it is dusty and clean. And check if the fan works. Make sure air flow is not blocked. Other than that, this is how it is designed.

The CPU/GPU will throttle based on temperature. While that costs performance, it will protect the hardware.

IIRC there was a case where a manufacturer was sued for burning (or just hot) laps when people had it on the lap.

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from WkdPaul in Linus should stop complaining about the ISO keyboard layout
Until OP pointed this out, I didn't even know there are different types. I only knew there is an English QWERTY and the German QWERTZ layout. I assume each country/language has some specific layouts.

But what I don't understand is, why complain about it? In times of internet I'm sure in most the World you can order any type of keyboard you want and in Windows you can set which type you use (for example, setting language to US international allows umlauts and Euro symbol etc.). I bet there is software to enable any type of widely used symbol.

No one is forcing anyone to use a specific keyboard. and if you watch an international channel, they obviously use one type and some of the audience a different one. So what? It doesn't change watching.... and if someone doesn't like what LTT has to say, no one forces you to watch it. I think every minute there are a thousand hours of video uploaded.... sure enough choice and one of them will use a keyboard approved by you. Or make your own YT channel and use whatever you like.

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from asheenlevrai in New Power Supply Fried My Boot Drive
i don't think that comparison is valid. A CPU has many actually new features and actual communication. Even new CPU not always work in the same socket. It would hold development back if AMD was forced to make their CPU work with an intel board and vice versa. It isn't just that AMD uses the same pins than Intel and only swap pin locations.

A power cable is just standardized (and that is standardized) 3, 5 and 12V of certain current. There is zero technical reason to not have that the same for all manufacturers. It also makes the aftermarket for cables more complex and expensive. Same way some board manufacturers switch contacts on the 24-pin on their proprietary PCs.

I don't see the issue here?
Last year when intaly went into lockdown what did you think happened: My company started pay me to stay at home doing nothing or if there was something to do I'd work from home and if there was nothing to do I'd use my vacations?
Small hint: i started this year with negative 16 hours of accumulated vacations.

Same happens when it snows and moving back and forth from work is near impossible. With the only difference that a storm locks the place for at worst a week, the lockdown lasted 5 months.

I don't blame my company for it, frankly that was for the best. The alternative was to ask the company to release me from work during the lockdown and get money from the state. Which meant
    1) less money per month, compared to my salary
    2) there are still people waiting for their money since last year, so yeah 😒

We got lucky that our company didn't suffer like many that ended up closing shop, and in that case forcing everyone who lost their job to rely on the state.

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from Archer42 in What counts as a scalper?
Not defending scalpers here... but all they do is buy a number of pieces with the hope to sell at a higher price. They also run the risk of losing money if the market craters. Or in case of concert tickets, they could lose everything if all of sudden not enough people decide to want to buy.

Not much different than any of the distributors in a supply chain. " Best Buy" buys a bulk of equipment, and sells it at  a higher price than they pay. Main difference I assume, the scalper just does it occasionally, when certain market conditions allow a profit. Look at ticketmaster. an artist gets $30 per ticket, and TM sells them for $80 and adds BS fees etc. Only difference I see is they have a website and do it all the time. Someone else may buy the ticket for $8 in the hope to sell for $120, but to me that added scalper is not different than TM.

Ultimately they provide a market correction in that the original seller didn't charge enough to reflect market value of the product. If the market allows $600 for a GPU, then the manufacturer could have charged $600.

Used equipment also is priced based on market. Someone selling a 50 year old Porsche may get more money than when the car was new. Or nothing. Ultimately you don't need to buy if you don't like the price. If you pay the price, ultimately it was worth it to you.

If you think scalpers have such an easy life, what stops you from getting rich? Again, I'm not defending them, but they do nothing illegal or really wrong.

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from whm1974 in Why the Perseverance Rover computer is so "outdated"
All the calcs use relatively little computing power. I mean they flew to the Moon in the 1960's with a computer that has less power than many watches nowadays. Watch the movie " hidden figures", they had computers to prepare the mission. By computers I mean people whose job it was to compute with pen and paper. I'm sure that 200MHz system the rover has can run circles around all the human and mainframe computers they had.

And you don't find the newest technology AND proven track record in the same device. That thing also flies through millions of miles of space radiation. Mars also has less sun-power for the solar cells (more distance from sun). So power consumption is even more of an issue. Design of that rover probably started 10-15 years ago. They can't be like certain manufacturers and use the consumer as the beta tester 🙂

Same can probably said about the OS and software it uses. It will look very primitive compared to Windows, but it will work ALL THE TIME. No one from NASA wants to come to this forum mid-mission and ask advice on how to re-boot... 🙂

HerrKaLeu got a reaction from Lurick in LTT Dress Code
I'm working in the Building Architecture / engineer industry. My employer's only guidance (and not written rule) is to wear long pants and not shorts. I guess having the clothes being clean goes without saying, at least that hasn't been said yet. Some of the engineers wear sandals (I wouldn't - need an OSHA boot much the time anyway). Linus would totally be an average dresser here.

Consultants often dress up. IMHO, the ones that dress the most fancy (tie etc.) are either interns, or people so high up the ladder they don't do any actual work besides meetings. the in between (i.e. actual design engineers) dress just normal with T-shirt, maybe Polo if they want to be fancy.

IMHO, the fancy dresser's real talent is to snow-blind others with fancy talk. it sure is not their technical expertise or quality of work.

A general rule is if your job is to impress other people without substance, dress up. If your job is already impressive due to talent and quality work, you don't over-dress.

A resume hint from before the internet: Include all your foreign country experience, credentials, and experience. If you don't have any of those, use extra heavy embossed paper.
