Who thinks LTT should create a UK office?

JammyCreedog

Maybe start as a brand new channel like short circuit or carpool critics did.  It'd have it's own staff and writers everything. Didn't Top Gear UK do the same thing with new actors?

It also might clear up some red tape serving as a base for shipping merch....... lttstore.com

Anybody have any thoughts about this?

Not worth it imo. If they were more into physical products, then I could see a case for it but an office for the sake of having an American office is (to put it bluntly) dumb.

Either @piratemonkey or quote me when responding to me. I won't see otherwise

Transitioning a business to multiple locations is a massive undertaking, and exponentially more so if the second location is international. This wouldn't be nearly as simple as you seem to think.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There would be no gain or value in doing so. No other way to explain it. I mean, how would they earn money? YouTube is saturated with tech channels so they'd really only be hurting themselves. Not to mention most of the Float Plane work can be done remotely (and is). They have a good system as it is, and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Last I remember it was a writer, Jon, but having one person with minimal infrastructure needs work remotely is an entirely different beast to creating a second location.

It's a writer named Jon. I think he will sometimes work in office, but the majority is off site. I can see having remote workers international, but to have a whole physical building is unnecessary. I think all but two or 3 floatplane people are offsite too

In case you haven't noticed, the UK has left the EC and that might make it one of the worst places in Europe they could pick.

And what of the technology they might be interested in comes from Europe?

Yes but only if they also decide to start functioning as a reseller of computer components only available in Europe, to North America.

Specifically, a lot of these newer high end small form factor cases.

(Maybe reach out to Singularity Computers and sell some of his cases here)

whats the point in doing this? it probably makes more sense for them to open an asia office instead so they can be closer to the manufacturing and visit factories etc easier and get stuff earlier

Multiple offices create greater cost and complexity.  The Asia office makes a lot more sense (taiwan maybe? The place seems less opaque to me than mainland China) but even then gains need to outweigh costs.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

That's correct. (I'm not entirely sure what the morons who claimed that this Brexit nonsense would make it a better place for buiness over here - it hasn't)

And if they are producing media for international platforms (YouTube and Floatplane) and are getting tech primarily from the US and Asia, then what difference does it make anyway to the audience?

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

To be fair, there are already connections between LMG and manufacturers in Asia, as he has told us on multiple occasions

(BTW please don't quote the original post, they'll get a notification regardless)

But Indians have to pay outright double for the merch. DOUBLE. That's the whole issue!

Why?

What benefit would opening an office in the UK have?  And no, it wouldn't help with shipping stuff. They have carrier services handling their shipping already.

Firstly, there is plenty of tech coming from Europe.

Secondly, you don't need an office in the country where something comes from. Most consumer technology products comes from Asia, and a LTT doesn't seem to have any problems getting products from there despite being located in Canada, right?

India makes no sense either.

Having an office in India doesn't nullify the taxes India charges on goods. Having an LMG office in India or not makes 0 difference to the cost of the merchandise.

It's only when products start being manufactured in India that things like import duties goes away, and since LMG doesn't manufacture their own merchandise it's not really something just opening an office fixes.

That will be because they are being shipped from China to Canada and then back to India. I believe LMG have considered setting up merch warehouses outside North America, but that wouldn't require a full workforce similar to the one in Vancouver.

Honestly I won't even pay normal price for the merch - it's really overpriced!

That's not the bulk of the cost. It costs ~$3,500 to ship a container from China to Canada. It can hold 45,000 tee shirts. So, roughly 10 cents a shirt.
All of those are estimates on the low side. It's also just an example, as they don't manufacture those overseas.

It comes down to shipping individual items internationally.

you buy the merch to support them, like donating to a twitch streamer, or buying cosmetics in a game you like.

They could price it more reasonably though. The hoodies are like 1.5X the price of a good nike one and it's all more expensive than say band rags of the same item.

could be dependant on the material used for the hoodie and prints.

i don't know what LTT uses or what Nike uses but i'd say if they're 1.5x the price of a good quality Nike hoodie, then the materials probably match or supersede the ones Nike uses.

if that's not the case, then yes they're overpriced.

but then again, just don't buy it if you don't want to support them, or they don't offer a way to support them within your budget range, then it's LTT that loses out.
