    Hello everyone! I was wondering if someone could give me advice on a used car purchase. It's a 2000 Toyota Mr2 Spyder. if you're going to try to convince me not to because of the look, tough luck because I absolutely love the look lol. Anyways, the car has done about 150K miles and has an asking price of $4,500. It's been well maintained, but does have two problems worth noting. At high RPM in higher gears, the car will start to burn oil (so fast highway driving). It still passes smog, but it does require more frequent changes, and is helped a bit by using higher gauge oil. I'm hoping that since the car only burns oil at higher speeds, it can be fixed using some non-bank-breaking methods like an "Italian hot-fix" in which the car is red-lined for 20 minutes until all of the carbon build up is burned off and the engine parts have expanded to seal better. Another small problem is that there is some cosmetic damage on the rear bumper and tail light, but this doesn't bother me at all. adds character. I'll post some pictures.

    If it has the same 1ZZ-FE as my corolla does (which I think it does) then;

    the oil burning is caused by clogged oil return holes in each piston, when this happens the oil cannot drain properly through these holes, causing it to burn in the cylinder. Luckily it isn't much oil so usually these cars have no blue smoke. It will however need to be watched, I keep my dipstick above halfway between the low and full marks. The fix for this issue is to drill 4 more oil return holes in each piston, which is enough to drain the oil fast enough to keep them from clogging again. All these engines usually develop this problem at 30-80K miles, so it is a very common issue. The important thing is to make sure the previous owner topped off their oil.

    I tried the Italian fix with my car... three times. Never saw an improvement. Methods like this will only work if the issue just started. If it's been burning oil for a long time you are out of luck.

    Despite the burning issue, these engines are still very reliable. I've seen a couple make it to 400K miles even though they started burning oil around 60K. So honestly, I wouldn't worry about it to much. A DIY rebuild isn't terribly difficult on this engine though (well in a corolla, an MR2 might be harder because you might not be able to do it with it inside of the car (small space).

    The car looks nice, I think I would buy it. The minor visual issues should be easy and cheapish to fix.

    Speaking of getting faster, I just beat the game        . I'd love to have captured it, but apparently shadowplay doesn't work with OpenGL games, So I took a video of the ending with my phone instead.

    Thanks for all the great suggestions people! I managed to learn about shure brand, which I didn't know about before, but what I'm actually going to go for are these $30 pair my friend showed me on Amazon. They have foam tips and are well reviewed. I'll post a link to them once I'm home.

    This one happens every year. A meteor shower is just when the earth wanders into a band of floating debris from asteroids and comets and such. If it is in a constant location, then we will always hit it around the same time every year.

    You do realize the amazing opportunity you have been granted, right? You must target all of your wallpapers toward the spider from now on. Maybe a spider web background, or people cowering in fear and pointing at it. Or a picture of a city, and make the spider look huge, and like it's climbing a building.

    nightmarevoid got a reaction from Ridska in Can a LAN network be set up in a car?
    I'm going on a road trip with my girlfriend and her family to Southern California on Friday the Third, which is pretty cool, except that my girlfriend's sister prefers to not go anywhere and instead play League of Legends on her laptop. As such, I thought I'd take it upon myself to set up some kind of LAN network within the car (thinking of calling it highwayLANder. . .  huehuehuehue) in order for us to play P2P on minecraft and other games which allow LAN connection games, just so she doesn't get bored. My first instinct was to get a mobile hotspot, except that those cost a pretty penny, may not allow P2P communication (for security), and will be using data to connect to the internet, which is a feature that probably won't be used. Which brings me to my question all you computer wizards:

    How can I set up a functional local area network within a car for P2P gaming.

    If i have to, I'll get the hotspot and gift it to my own sister later, but I'd prefer not to. Thanks in advance for the help.
    Also, here are some things to consider when coming up with your own frankenstein creation:
    all laptops being used have both wireless and wired network capabilities I have a lot of spare network switches, a netgear wireless hotspot, and linksys wireless G router just lying around to use. it all has to fit under the seats of a toyota camry (the seats will be cramped as is) I'm not very experienced in Linux, but if necessary I can learn and I know a lot of computer programmers who can help. GO FORTH YOU MAD, NETWORKING GENIUSES!

    For a comparison, here's what a cable chewed through by a jerk of a rabbit looks like. This would be a rough simulation of a rat chewing something, as they have similar teeth.
