Misanthrope got a reaction from Taf the Ghost in Microsoft and Sony Team Up ( EDIT: PlayStation team was not notified )
I did: Nadella has been very consistent in pushing Microsoft was a service provider, even above their traditional product avenues. I think that while he's still willing to let the rest of the teams at MS have their attempts the board hired him because he's proven Azure is the future for Microsoft and at this rate I fully expect them to retire for many of the more competitive product avenues and just focus on Azure: We can give you servers and cloud, you can bring your own OS or you can also rent out Windows licenses (Or just use Linux, your choice).

We can sell you space for your entertainment products. We have the Xbox entertainment ecosystem but that's opt in you can also select Playstation network or develop your own (Again, with Linux).

So long as all people keep paying and depending on Azure they're going to be eventually ok with competitors, because it's the smart thing to do if you own the fucking store. (See: Valve, Epic)

None of those things have moving parts on a device that is expected to be constantly carried and handled by the users, so excuse me but no it can't be said about "anything" unless you want to go back 15 years to the flip phone era.

So basically the AMEX Black for plebs (Not quite AMEX black but still "luxury")?

You know, on second thought, the fact that it is black should have tipped me off.

But yeah if you have to ask if it's a good deal it's probably not for you, so makes sense.

You're missing who this is targeted for. It's generally not going to be for people with a $1000 or even $10,000 credit limit. It's for people with more money than sense who have $50,000 or $100,000+ credit limits on a single card or for the business person who takes 10 or more flights per month.

Misanthrope got a reaction from xAcid9 in Rage 2 PC performance benchmarks
Was watching a stream for this last night. It looks almost worth it: if there was thing the open world sandbox genre has been missing despite the incredible over saturation is something extremely fast passed. This is basically Doom meets Modern Sandbox (Farcry, Just Cause, Mad Max, etc.) And for that game play alone looks rather fun...

The thing is there's barely any actual content or shit to do of any substance (Vs say, a full on RPG sandbox at least). So I currently have it on "Grab on a good deal or when it's time for GOTY editions".

Misanthrope reacted to SpaceGhostC2C in Crowdfunded game Outer Wilds is now an Epic Store timed exclusive
Remember, "backing" is not buying nor investing, it is donating. And I'd bet in the crowdfunding pages, somewhere, whether prominently displayed or in a footnote, it says that all plans are subject to change. I mean, we already know that crowdfunded projects can simply call it a day, shutdown, and never deliver anything. It's basically people telling them what they'd love to do, and you giving them money no strings attached. It's probably unethical on the developers' behalf, but not more than a beggar asking money because he's hungry, then spending it all on booze.

It's sad because there are games for which crowdfunding worked perfectly, delivered everything as promised, and probably could not have been funded any other way (e.g., Thimbleweed Park), but it's hard to argue against a "no pre-order, no crowdfunding" rule of thumb...

Misanthrope reacted to Sauron in Chrome OS 74 will disable Hyper-Threading by default
That's irrelevant, MDS is a hardware vulnerability.
That doesn't mean one of the two can't be more secure than the other for an end user running ChromeOS.

Also Google specifically mentions Intel and HyperThreading by name:
Maybe SMT will be next but as of right now I think it's safe to say AMD chips aren't affected by this change - as in, if you install ChromeOS on a Zen pc you won't have SMT disabled by default. Regardless it hardly matters considering you can re-enable HT if you want to.

They came up with this foldable thing...I think the "Y tho" is fairly warranted here: Lenovo, like we get it: you want to compete with the Surface line...Get a real fucking keyboard ok? Even a small one, not a lot of travel that's fine just some fucking tactile feedback. Then I can justify paying you 500 and above since I could actually get some shit done in a pinch if I need to type.

If I need to bring my own bluetooth keyboard then you fucking failed already. Side note: I am finally seeing Amazon bundling the Surface go with the keyboard cover for a reasonable price so really bad timing for people thinking about a really portable secondary device.

That's what I've heard and read from the reviews on the yoga books, yes.

Also just to clarify a little bit: I am ok with a keyboardless tablet product but the thing about these is that you're charging a lot more because you're selling them as an in-between product: Better than a tablet yet not quite a laptop. So for that kind of premium yeah, either figure out perfect tactile response on a screen (Hint: not happening on a product under 2k) or include a keyboard option somewhere.

I agree with everything you said. But I think you may have misunderstood my post. I was not talking about AMD gaining big amounts of market share and challenging Nvidia.

I was  merely talking about price / perf overall in the entire GPU market. Obviously if/when AMD launches new GPUs with good price / perf then the entire industry moves in that direction. Nvidia will cut their prices too, they will still charge more than AMD because they can, but they certainly won't stick to their current pricing. I am well aware that most people just buy Nvidia without thinking. But Navi launching with good price / perf helps everyone and it is much needed.

This is a pretty big misunderstanding on your part.

Here is the thing: people will not buy a product out of principle. No: a tiny, microscopic minority of modern day Unabombers will not impact products that can only be manufactured under the current modern global capitalist paradigm taking advantage of every single possible short cut and cost saving measure to give you the very max on performance while keeping the margins the highest they can be.

So not to digress: Yes I am well aware that Nvidia is manipulating pricing by pushing the prices up constantly without regards to actual market forces (Hint: That's what happens when you get closer and closer to a monopoly and every company wants competitors to die by any means necessary so how would you stop monopolies on a system that makes them the ultimate goal for any company?)

AMD is just not able to compete in the high end and as I stated many times before, the high end is absolutely necessary. No it is not the most profitable segment at all but people will want to bet for whomever has the performance crown. AMD has been far away from even competing for the max performance for several years and it's a situation that cannot go on on this market where games get more and more intensive, developers get sloppier (By necessity: they have to prioritize resources to already ridiculous undertakings that are AAA games) and other hardware vendors want to sell new technologies (Another hint: 1440p was never pushed for and we skipped to a tremendous strain by aiming for 4K instead because well, it's a bigger number and that's where overall tech decided we should go towards) so a card that matches the 2070 at 300 will sound awesome only to the ultra nerds like me or other members of these forums and nobody fucking else.

Average person might see the 300 card performing as good as the 600 card sure, but when they ask about the 1000+ cards they'll get a generic answer like "Oh that's more for hardcore gamers and people who want the best games at 4k" and just like that, the fact that they will not even see an AMD product at that 1000+ price bracket already tainted them.

This is why AMD keeps having better performance for the price and hasn't gained any market share back in like a decade.

This exactly. People will buy a more expensive product that performs worse than the competition at the drop of a hat because most people outside of the tech world don't know any better. There are people who bought 2080ti just for raytracing in BF5, a game they did not even know if they would like at the time, just because it was the most high end and had the most "shiney" features.

This line REALLY scares me, because it sounds an awful lot like Embrace, extend and extinguish.
I do not want Microsoft to get people to use their "custom Linux kernel" which might not behave the same way as the standard Linux kernel. I would like a standard, unmodified kernel.

As Valentyn said: Issue here is that if your company/client is ok with you working abroad remotely, then you're in a conflict of interest between the probably illegal request and the very-much-legal NDA: Yes they could keep the laptop and phone, but no I cannot give you the password since the data there does not belong to me, belongs to my employer/client so I cannot legally consent to you looking at it border crossing or not.

In fact I also planned on possibly doing this (Since I also work remotely through a VPN) and I wouldn't be giving my work passwords to the TSA or ICE or the Royal Mounted Whatever in Canada, I'd be like "Sure go right ahead and keep it, you're not getting the passwords, I will tell legal at my company to contact you"

EDIT: Also this is a good argument as to why, even as a free lancer, you should probably keep work and personal devices separated. I would let any airport agent look at my Mass Effect alien porn videos all they want but that's because that's my stuff to submit for review (And quite honestly, personal amusement at their reaction to the extremely nasty but legal porn I keep) but work stuff should always be separate.

If they did that with my stuff which are provided by work, I'd have to contact my company's global security team ASAP. No way anyone should be giving up their own details or passwords. Not unless they're being charged with a crime can/should they confiscate anything, and even then don't give them anything until you speak to council. What right do they have to essentially steal someone's property?

I thought Canada of all places were better than that.
