precision boost overdrive, a sort of auto-overclock from amd, you find it in bios

usually best to enable pbo and slap a good cooler on it and let ryzen boost as much as it can automatically. usually, you get the best performance this way.

Steve over at GN has directly addressed the comparison of a 3600 and a 3700x (it also includes a 9700k and a 3900x), give it a watch to determine if you think it'll be worth the extra cost.
As always, and particularly with Zen 2, generally speaking, there isn't a significant amount of overhead for overclocking, but the silicon lottery will determine how far you can go. From the factory, they're binned to squeeze very near the limit of stability.

For your performance target, a 3600 is definitely worth it.

    Bah, always clarifying things

That goes without saying, which I would hope people asking would already take into consideration.

Thanks for the input! The reason why I am looking to get a 2070S is because unfortunately my 1080 was fried by a leakage in my CPU AIO, and I am currently running on a 1060 3 GB. Nevertheless, I am also considering getting a Ryzen 3 chip as well

My question is pretty much the title - I am looking to buy an RTX 2070 Super in a month or two, and was wondering which model of the aftermarket cards could give the best thermals/ OC ability?

I also know that manufacturers launch different 'versions' of the same card, such as the ASUS Strix 8G,  A8G, and O8G. Does the the extra price point really justify the 'extra' performance?

    Yes.

    Update BIOS first.

Yes, as long as you are ok with measuring seconds per frame and not frames per second

I was able to find a used GTX 1060 3 GB locally for $75, but I think it was just a really lucky find. Keep browsing deals on Ebay or Facebook marketplace and maybe something good will pop up!

    Update on this thread:

I was contacted by DeepCool and it seems that they had discovered the leak in their AIO had indeed killed my graphics card. With that said, they are sending me a replacement AIO and over $300 to reimburse my GTX 1080.

With the money, I am thinking of getting a RTX 2070 Super (when the prices go down) or maybe even a 2060 Super, as it has on par performance to a 1080 from what I have seen.

I would argue that just becuase it shows a signal after already being dead once , doesn't mean it works.
Yeah that just sounds like a fried gpu or vram. I would lean toward gpu as bad vram usually show artifacts even in 2d apps.

i wouldn't bother and just buy another gpu or see if the 1080 is still under warranty.

I have never heard of someone sending a component to a totally different manufacturer or a different component to determine if it was their own fault.

I'm willing whatever deepcool rep you talked to wanted to call your bluff on sending it to them and when you did they are simply going to say they were not at fault anyway.

Sadly, that's where you are. GFX cards are very binary. Either they work, or they don't. And there is no real fixing them, unless you are very good with a soldering iron and technical testing equipment to find the failed components.

I am sending my GPU and cooler back to DeepCool's facility in China so they can run testing to confirm that the CPU cooler leak caused my GPU to fry, and from what I've heard, if that holds true, they will reimburse me a sum of money for that mishap

No the courier will not want to inspect the package.

Place a copy of your RMA # (or correspondence/email that approves the return), along with a list of all parts you're sending them, inside the box. Take pictures of all the items outside the box. Take pictures of the items in the box, with the box still open.

    Seal the box.

Place the label on the box.

Take pictures of the sealed box.

I've personally used both the Cryorig H7 for my 4790K, and an Arctic Freezer (33, not 34 but very similar) Esports ONE in Blue Build 2018 (link in signature), which held a R5 2600 to 4.05ghz@1.375V under 70ºC after multiple cinebench runs, so I can say with confidence they're good value coolers.
