Best GPU around $70 range

Tonberry

Hi...

I need a strong GPU around $70 US to be dedicated as a long term backup or just simply as a placeholder on a Z370 motherboard, because reasons.

Either AMD/Nvidia, whichever as the strongest at that price range, please recommend them as I didn't follow what GPU world offered before Nvidia's pascal and/or AMD's RX series GPUs.

Thanks

Get a Radeon Rx 470/560 4gb models. These are low GPU kings.

Friend personally uses 460 MSI models for 4yrs+ no problems . Purchased at rs 14,000 or around 150$ 4 years back. .... all games 1080p medium settings ... Good.

If Nvidia is your choice. Try to get 750ti it is by far the best , better than 760 or 950, if you can find one.

What is the direct rival of GTX 750Ti on AMD side?

A used rx470 or 570 would be your best bet. Great value for little money.

You can buy RX 470 or RX 570 4-8GB for ~70-75$ + shipping on eBay

There's some  "mining edition" cards that have a single DVI output so you can do a single monitor and maximum 1920x1200 and you can use a 1-2$ DVI-HDMI adapter if you need hdmi out.

Some have the footprint for hdmi or displayport jack behind the bracket so if you have the skills you can buy a connector from eBay or electronic parts stores like Digikey/Mouser/Farnell/Newark and a bunch of 0 ohm resistors and solder the hdmi connector to get 2 outputs.

It's also super easy to program a regular bios from a standard version of the card - these cards may have the gpu chip running at slightly lower frequency compared to standard versions, and a simple bios flashing solves this and it's fairly safe to do.

Here's a couple examples:

1. MSI RADEON RX470 MSI MINER 8GB USED MINING GRAPHICS CARD CRYPTO CURRENCY

2. SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon RX 470 4GB GDDR5 Mining Graphics Card

I have spare money to get up to RTX 2070S, I just want to get a good old model just as a backup if there's something wrong with my system, or in case I lost my main GPU for some reason, either break or I sell it before I get a new one.

I also have 1 good backup PSU just for safety/troubleshooting reason to save up some time and hassle if something wrong happen.

I learn this from my working place where there are always backup parts around for every components for the workstations. Those really helps and very handy if something wrong happen, so we can troubleshoot with minimal down time and hassle.

Spare PSU and GPU are more useful than the other spare computer parts that we have.

Looks legit. Stacks up way below 290, not a terrible card though. Why do you want card from 2012? Where do you live? I would look up local online markets, there are newer cards in your budget.

It's probably fine, but it has low performance for the amount of power it consumes

It will consume up to 210w and will be somewhere between RX 460 and RX 470 or GTX 1050 performance ... here's a comparison with RX 470 where 470 is much faster : https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1872?vs=1751

You can get OEM HP RX 460 cards with 2 GB ram for 60$ :

1. https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-AMD-Radeon-RX-460-2GB-GDDR5-PCI-e-3-0-x-8-HDMI-Display-Port-DVI-910486-002/303129836700

2. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-AMD-Radeon-RX460-2GB-PCI-Express-PC-Gaming-Graphics-Card-RX-460-HDMI-DP-DVI/223485513334

The 280 would make sense if you want something with VGA connector... the newer generations of video cards no longer have analogue outputs and it's not possible to use a cheap 1-2$ dvi->vga adapter to get vga out of them.

I looked for RX 470 and it's just still over $70 just to be an on shelf backup or placeholder when main GPU is absent. Even GT 1030 is $90, here. Sorry, I'm in Asia, I converted the price to USD seemed like a bad way to give you guys an idea.

Gtx 760 vs R9 280X those are I think the strongest at $70 here.

280 : https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-r9-280.c2405

280x : https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-r9-280x.c2398

not much differences, probably just slight performance bump, like in the case of rx 470 vs rx 480 only probably even less performance increase.

I only linked to 280 vs rx 470 because there was only 280 tested in that year by Anandtech

OK, further searchings narrowed it down to

Sapphire RX 460 4Gb Nitro

vs

Gigabyte GTX 760 2Gb Windforce triple fans

They're at exact same price $62. I think these 2 are good deals.

So which is the wiser choice here then?

The GTX 760 has only 2 GB of memory which may cause some modern games to refuse to work. Or, you may have to run the games at 1080p at low-medium quality settings, so that the game textures fit within 2 GB of memory.

On the upside most models will probably still have DVI-I connector, allowing to use a passive 1-2$ DVI-VGA adapter and connect a plain VGA only monitor to the video card.

The RX 460 has 4 GB of memory and has no analogue outputs (no vga) and should be faster in dx 10 or dx 11 games, and probably a bit slower in some games than gtx 760 in dx 9 .. see review here : https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-radeon-rx-460,4707.html

The GTX 760 should consume around 160 watts so it may come with a pci-e 8 pin connector... the RX 460 should consume less... I'd say less than 100w on average (should only require a pci-e 6 pin at most)

I was able to find a used GTX 1060 3 GB locally for $75, but I think it was just a really lucky find. Keep browsing deals on Ebay or Facebook marketplace and maybe something good will pop up!
