GollyGee reacted to scighera2 in Used graphics card for <$40?
GTX 760 should be selling for around $40 fairly commonly.
Maybe a GTX 770 if you get lucky.
I don't know about AMD gpus for that price.

GollyGee reacted to Zhanming12 in Project Oracle - Dual CPU, 1080 SLI mid-tower
Parts list:
Loop components:
CPU Mark with all 44 cores. I guess it's safe to say that this is one of the most powerful mid-towers out there?
Some photos of the mostly finished loop:
Update: Loop completed and tested! Here's a shot of the entire build...

GollyGee reacted to AshleyAshes in Can You Recycle A Laptop Into A Desktop? Let's Find Out!
Yup, it POSTed and I got it to boot with at least a Radeon HD 4850 so I can get it to run SOME discrete GPUs.

GollyGee reacted to AshleyAshes in Can You Recycle A Laptop Into A Desktop? Let's Find Out!
The good news is that on the first go it POSTed and even booted up the Laptop's install of Win10 without issues! The Win10 install was just like "Hey! I'm here! I don't have a battery anymore and now I have a slightly different chipset, okay, I'll deal."
...And then it didn't. It's been shutting itself off and refusing to boot and then suddenly find. I ruled out the test PSU, it is a six year old CX600, but using a much newer SF450 same issue. Then suddenly it booted up and it was fine! So uhh... I don't QUITE trust it yet. Right now it's on my living room floor and running the 3D Mark Ice Storm demo on an infinite look as a 'stress test' and we'll see if it shuts itself off or not.

Depends on what you want to do with it really?
If gaming perhaps a slightly better gfx and more ram.

GollyGee reacted to aisle9 in Should I get a gmaing PC off of Craigslist?
Used is definitely the way to go. My suggestion: pick up a Dell Optiplex tower off of eBay with a -2XXX or -3XXX i5 in it, a 500GB+ hard drive and 8GB of RAM. Should set you back $200 tops, and you get an upgradeable Windows license with it. Drop another $50 on a used GTX 750 Ti or step up to the plate for a new RX 460/GTX 1050, and boom, you're done, and you've got a PC that will game circles around an FX-6300/R7 360 based pile of trash.

GollyGee reacted to Brennan Price in The Cupboard PC is Finished!!
Ok, so it isn't exactly a build log as such but I wanted to share what one can do with cheap vinyl. Admittedly it isn't perfect as it has a few air bubbles in places (especially the back side panel) but the case was in a pretty bad condition before hand and this is a HUGE improvement aesthetically. So here are the results of my PC case now:
Edit: I took the photos of my PC in the garden as I thought the wood appearance would look nicer with some greenery and light instead of my dark man cave

GollyGee reacted to SamuelTheShark in Insert really cool and badass build name here
I finally finished my first ever build. It took a few months debating what parts to get, waiting for said parts, crying because of mining boom and rx shortage but in the end it was all worth it.
This build went through a few iterations before I finally decided on all the parts and pulled the trigger.
Specs are:

GollyGee reacted to Brodholm in WING X99 | A CNC-milled Scratch Build! (Benchmarks, temps and wallpapers posted!)
The time has finally come to post the final pictures and video of this project. It has been a crazy ride for me, both with very high ups and very low downs. It has taken almost two years to complete and well over 1000 hours of work and planning. Starting with ideas, crude sketches, countless hours in CAD to finally taking physical form. But I have learned a lot and got to know a lot of new friends during the process!
I would like to thank the sponsors of this project: ASUS, INTEL, CORSAIR and EKWB for believing in me and the project! And also to the people behind the brands, who are always there answering questions and offering support! You know who you are, thanks!
I would lastly like to thank everyone on forums, Facebook and Youtube who have helped me with ideas, suggestions, and kind and encouraging words. This really keeps me focused on the goal and enables me to achieve the best results possible. I cannot stress this enough, I owe you a lot! I hope you will enjoy the final video and pictures of the project WING X99.
THANK YOU ALL!
I also made a final video!
Reflections
I think it is important to look back at what you have done and reflect on what you could have done better, most importantly regarding methodology. After thinking about this for a long while I have realized a few important things.
The most important one was that I bit off more than I could chew. I really think I took it a few steps too far with this project, with designing and building my own CNC and then immediately starting on this one. Since it was basically only me working on this it was just*WAY too much work for one person to get done in a reasonable time frame. I have worked way too much lately and it has effected both me, my university studies, my fiancée Josefina (who is amazing and understanding) and my friends.
I can't help but to think back at those months around when I worked 6-7 days a week, 14+ hours a day. I basically lived in the workshop and only slept and ate during that time. Don't get me wrong, the feeling I have now is amazing and I am very proud of the results. But next time I will definitely change some things to lighten the work load or get someone to help me more. All in all, if given the choice, I would do it all again. I have learned a lot from this, not just as a modder, but also as a person.
I know a lot of you have asked about how much the whole case with components weighs. And I finally have the answer! It is 42 kg, or about 94 lbs
Side note
The build also qualified for the “DreamHack Summer Master Class Casemod Championship” along with 5 other great builds! WING X99 will be on display for the competition, but also in the ASUS ROG booth that they have at DHs. I will be there a lot of the time so come and say hello! Hope to see some of you there!
Final words
Right now I feel very empty and happy at the same time. The project is finally done after all this hard work. But I mostly feel amazing and have genuine gratitude towards everyone who helped in any way with the project. Be it writing a kind comment, helping with the design or actual physical help. YOU are amazing!

GollyGee got a reaction from Rcarvalho21 in Help with pimping my computer?
The SSD and the CPU cooler fan are the only things messing up the color scheme. Could you mount the SSD behind the motherboard or under the PSU shroud? If there are only 3.5" drive bays there, you could by a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter for your SSD. Also, get a non-led or green led fan for the cooler. If you want to, you could try something to make the top of the cpu cooling tower black, such as using some high-temp spray-paint.
-
GollyGee reacted to Lurick in Help with pimping my computer?
You could get some custom PSU extensions from CableMod and swap the fan for a green LED fan, or just remove the LED fan on the CPU cooler all together and go for a plain fan.
Do you have a specific color in mind or scheme in mind?

GollyGee got a reaction from ProjectBox153 in Optiplex 990 flashing amber light
I solved it by pushing the 24-pin power cable in with extra force. Apparently other people had the same problem with their Corsair PSUs, and they said that this fixed it, so I tried it. PC is now working great!

I'm good at doing the opposite. But then again, $8,000 SSDs aren't going to by themselves.

GollyGee reacted to tikker in [Build Log - Finished] Corsair Crystal 570X Watercooled Build
Not exactly the aforementioned night, but here are some final pictures. It's done now (and yes my desk is a mess atm). Some tubes are not perfectly as straight as I would like them to be, but I cannot fix that without wasting tons of tubing. Overall I think it turned out to be a pretty nice loop. Only the lighting is a little too bright maybe. I'm thinking of adding something to make it more diffuse.
