Hey guys... just bought the new Rama m60-a (and his keypad on mass drop). I also picked up some switches.... now I need advice on a keycap set to get. I'm very partial to the profile of my HHKB - so one close to that is good... anyone have any advice. I have time to wait... as I it will be at least a few months before I get teh boards.

I'm done with keyboards. This is for home, HHKB for work. maybe I'll get a couple of macropads... but otherwise i'm done.

    you probably need to type:

export CLICOLOR=1 in your .bash_profile as well.. or else the theme won't show up in terminal (my experience)

You should also read google's 2016 LSTM paper where they generated music reviews via google music.

You guys can ask me questions, I'm currently a practicing deep learning scientist (I guess I should update my profile).

What people don't realize is Neural Networks (one approach to AI) have been around since the 1960s. Its just now that we have the computational power (mostly GPUs) to train them efficiently.

It wouldn't surprise me. My buddy automates instagram posts for add campaigns, so something like that is definitely possible, but someone with that kinda knowledge might cost more than actual phone call center operators.

Data Science, the science of giving computers a sh*tload of data to learn from and then not understanding how they successfully used it.

I did a few things. I worked on a mantle convection solver to understand mantle flow at subduction zones, I also used Deep Learning/Complexity science to correlate events with ultra deep earthquakes. The problem with earthquakes is we don't know if they are inherently unpredictable (Complex) or if our understanding of physical processes is just too naive.  Most scientists think its the latter, I worked with a contingent of scientists  that said, well lets say we understand all the physics, how else could we predict earthquakes ? Thats how I kinda fell into Data Science.

Yes and no. A lot of it is pretty tedious... which is why i switched fields again.

I would have to agree that our understanding of the physical processes are too limited for the systems as they are extremely complex.  When you have to begin considering the relation of multiple fault zones, the strength characteristics of the rocks adjoining a fault, the forces that are acting all along the zone and then tertiary forces that may be applying energy to the system, it just begins to get out of control...  Not to mention that these can involve large zones that are hard to monitor or even get relevant data along the whole system to apply into the model.  Still a fun thing to study though.

And this may sound a bit vapid, but its easier to be a rockstar in data science right now.  There are a lot of people who want data scientists jobs, but very people who are qualified at all. The best people have backgrounds in math and computer science, but many people come from Business Intelligence which unless they keep studying will limit the scale and accuracy of their work.

The truth is that most laptops today with an i3 and 8gb of ram will be more than sufficient enough for almost any major in college.

If you are motivated enough to become an undergraduate researcher, your lab should have a computer to use. Some don't, but STEM labs have $$$

I think the idea is that normal macbook is for people who want a smaller laptop, and then the macbook pro 13 inch would be the "retina" macbook air. The specs of the 13 inch air and pro were already converging anyway.

Typical linus tech tips comments here. Many people not trying/able to think about the possibilities. Already cries of "NO MORE FUNCTION KEYS". A few things, in OSX the function keys are mostly used for things like display brightness, launchpad, pause play, and volume control. Do you really think they are so stupid as to get rid of that? Don't you think, its more likely, that just like 60% keyboards that don't have function keys (which I use btw) that there is a key that enables them either on the number row or on the LED strip? It works really well on my HKBB.

Also, I find it pretty hilarious that people here think they know how people use macbook pros better than apple knows. "macbook pros are targeted at professionals", "macbook pros are for powerusers". This might be true, but you know who really knows who buys their products? Apple. They pay their data scientists, at the junior level, over 120k a year to figure this out. Their senior level data scientists get paid 300k a year.

I am continually astonished by the arrogance of this community when talking about apple products.

So I dont think my perspective is universal, obviously, but perhaps I'll give you guys some insight into what I use a macbook for.

I am a computational geophysicist. The problems I research cannot be solved on any single computer, I have to use a cluster, and thousands of cores over many many hours to find solutions to my equations. These clusters ( the one i use https://www.tacc.utexas.edu/stampede/)  tend to interface with my macbook via the terminal. As long as a computer can do that, I can do my job. So what do I need from the computer beyond that? Long battery life, and great build quality. The macbook is one of the best at that. It's also nice that they are relatively thin, and I can do some matlab computations on them, and some decent visualization on them. But to really get a large improvement in performance beyond the macbook pro in a laptop form, I would have to get a laptop with a desktop cpu and a gtx 1070/1080. Other than that, the minor improvemnts from slightly faster hardware doesn't really make a difference like it would with gaming: the difference between sometihng taking 15 minutes and 30 minutes doesn't matter much because i can do other things while programs are running. It's not like playing a video game where slight performance decrease/increase cna make the the difference between smooth gameplay and jittery.

For what its worth, Apple and Linux dominates almost all basic research labs (basic in terms of the type of research, not in terms of simple). I realize this is a different world than Linus tech tips. But before you go on bashing apple, calling their decisions stupid, maybe stop and think about if there are any people who would like this?

Why can't execution be innovative ? People were building cars, had car factories before Henry Ford figured out that the assembly line was most efficient.  Doing something well is innovative, in my opinion.

I think a 1200 dollar ultrabook vs the macbook (normal) would be a better comparison. My feeling is the macbook has some advantages against these notebooks because of its pci-e ssds, which are standard on all apple laptops now.  i'm not sure if that has trickled to the windows laptops yet.

According to you, this isn't a valid question to ask:

Which ultrabook can edit 4k video faster: A macbook with FCPX or an Asus with Adobe Premiere?

I'm starting to sound like a broken record... people not understanding how to properly couch results. Jonathan isn't doing anything wrong, you are all reading into this.
