Above is a de-lidded CPU (IHS removed). The shiny mirror like surface, is the actual CPU die, and is what is made of silicon. This is mounted on a PCB which is the green part around this die (and has other smaller components on it).

suchamoneypit reacted to TheRandomness in Need some information about ROPs in GPU Memory
A few things come to mind.

    1) Where on Earth are you finding used R9 290s for $28?
    2) GDDR5, which is based off of DDR3, is QDR - Quad Data Rate, instead of DDR - Double Data Rate. For every clock cycle, a single GDDR5 memory chip can have twice as much data go in/out of it as a single DDR3 memory chip. This is why you see the "effective" speed of graphics memory listed as 4 times higher than the base speed. You can't just swap the modules since they're designed for different things.
    3) You don't need render-based objects (the ROPs) in a PC's main memory, since, well, the CPU isn't going to render things, that's down to the GPU. Which is why the GPU has the ROPs built in.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/xbox-one-x-gpu.c2977
Again what the hell are you smoking A single 2080 TI MSRPs for $1,200. AMD hasn't even DISCUSSED having a GPU that can go toe to toe with the 2080 Ti, the highest they have is the Radeon VII which is on 2080 levels. Even their newest arch, Navi, is only at 2070 levels of performance. Do you really think that AMD would ship a console part that has an even better GPU without also creating a comparable dedicated GPU for the PC market??? Use your brain bro...

suchamoneypit reacted to Dredgy in McDonald's Paper Straws - Yes or No? ( Edit: Mc DonaldsPaper Straws are now officially non-recylable)
Own a restaurant so can speak from it, I’m not really enthused about paper straws, but plastic straws need to go. ( I live in the Great Barrier Reef and go scuba diving a lot, plastic fucking everywhere). There’s no true alternative yet so whatever you end up with has a compromise compared to plastic. Paper is the best alternative for really thick drinks like thick shakes as they’re wide.

We trialled basically every type of straw.

Metal Straw Pros: Not disposable. Cons: To reuse, have to clean them. When you use several hundred straws a day, that’s a notable rise in labour cost. You also can’t bite down (which a lot of people do reflexively on straws) without hurting yourself, there’s no flex. Also high upfront cost they have a taste to them.  Paper straw. Pros: Reasonably cheap much better for environment than plastic. Cons: go soggy impact taste of drink. Bamboo Straw Pros: None really. Feel better than metal straws and does effect taste of drink Cons: Expensive, hard, have to clean. silicon Straw Pros: Most similar to plastic - great flex, can bite down, doesn’t effect taste. Cons: Expensive, have to clean. Straw straw This is what we ended up using, it’s so close to being the perfect straw. Pros: Cheap - less than $0.01 per straw. Not as cheap as plastic but closest too. Can bite down, theres just enough malleabilitY Compostable, we use them in the garden compost that we use to grow herbs Don’t have to be cleaned Don’t affect taste of drink Cons: Not enough flex to bend, will just snap variable width, so sometimes have to use two straws.  Usually too thin for really thick slushies.

suchamoneypit got a reaction from Crunchy Dragon in Ryzen master edc
EDC is a value that is for your motherboard VRMs power delivery I believe. Setting it to 168 pretty much says to let the CPU use as much current as it can from the motherboard VRMs. If the value is lighting up red at 100% that means the CPU is already maxing out the VRMs to increase its overclock. If its not at 100% , then it means you aren't maxing out the VRMs (there are other factors which will hold you back. Even if you set it to 168, you probably wont ever see it using that value. In my experience with my 2600x, the silicon/chip itself just cant clock any higher long before my EDC/motherboard VRM is maxed out). In my case my chip only really uses around 72% of my EDC of 168, meaning the chip only ever uses around 120 EDC of my max set 168. If you have crappy motherboard VRMs, maxing this value might put them under a lot of stress if you see it always pinned at 100% EDC (you would be asking for more power than the VRM can supply).

so in the case of my Ryzen 2600x, I have had every single value pretty much maxed out other than PPT which I believe is the wattage the CPU is allowed to pull because I see my temps are under control and my motherboard can handle it. I have mine set to 150 which is similar to the EDC in the sense that my CPU can't clock any higher well before the CPU could ever draw that much power so theres no sense in setting the value higher as it'll never use that much wattage.

So maxing out your EDC essentially says "use as much of the motherboard VRM as you can to increase my overclock". Whether the motherboard can actually meet that demand or uses it(or the chip can even take advantage) is dependent on the motherboard and CPU and the cooling. That at least my understanding. Keep in mind you are essentially letting the chip go as fast as it possibly can and AMD will not warranty the CPU or motherboard if pushing the VRMs far breaks something. I have run my purchased used 2600x for like 4-5 months with all values max without issue. AMD gives you a big pop-up explaining this and it reminds you everytime you launch Ryzen Master.

So a few things, while the clockspeeds appear to be lower than expected according to previous rumors. Please note that ES chips generally are clocked lower, so this doesn't rule out higher clockspeeds as of yet. Although, current speeds aren't too terrible for the amount of cores being offered. At least a 200-300MHz clockspeed boost could be plausible in final samples. As for the memory; this is great and with higher speed kits of ram, combined with the IF - will show some serious gains. Especially considering that we currently are seeing Ryzen top out at around 3000MHz. I cannot even imagine what performance gains with a 5000MHz kit would look like!

suchamoneypit reacted to badreg in Anyone able to help creating basic file permissions in a script on linux using chmod?
Is this a one-off file that you need to create?
chmod 750 <file> is the proper command. 7 is RWX for owner, 5 is RX for the group, and 0 is for everyone else. After you create the file, you also need to change the ownership with
    chown <department head>:<department>

If you need any newly created files in a directory to have specific permissions by default, access control lists are the proper way to do that.

suchamoneypit reacted to Windows7ge in Anyone able to help creating basic file permissions in a script on linux using chmod?
chmod is pretty easy and there's a few ways to write it. I prefer the numeric system.
chmod 644 nameOfFile Or in the event of a script:
chmod 744 nameofscript The first digit represents the read/write/execute permissions for the owner of the file
    The second = group
    The third = other

So lets say I wanted to make a script and only wanted the owner to be able to use it in any way at all I'd go:
chmod 700 nameofscript But usually group & other have read permissions on files that are created with default permissions so you'd ordinarily use 744. It all depends on the permissions you want the users to have.

Here's a more explanatory table I'm "borrowing" from the internet:
chmod 400 file    To protect a file against accidental overwriting. chmod 500 directory    To protect yourself from accidentally removing, renaming or moving files from this directory. chmod 600 file   A private file only changeable by the user who entered this command. chmod 644 file    A publicly readable file that can only be changed by the issuing user. chmod 660 file    Users belonging to your group can change this file, others don't have any access to it at all. chmod 700 file     Protects a file against any access from other users, while the issuing user still has full access. chmod 755 directory    For files that should be readable and executable by others, but only changeable by the issuing user. chmod 775 file    Standard file sharing mode for a group. chmod 777 file    Everybody can do everything to this file. The Sauce because I'm not interested in plagiarism.

You can use the sump as a heatsink but using the water itself is asking for trouble as that water is going to have a lot of minerals and contaminates.  If you want you can have it so there is a heat exchanger sitting in the sump to draw away the heat from a closed PC loop or to have the exhanger between a sump loop and a closed PC loop.

Sarcasm aside, the defining factor of "ear-rape" is its volume. Due to that, it's not only annoying but possibly painful/damaging depending on duration/volume.

You can overclock on that board, but you reaching 4ghz is entirely dependent on how good the chip is and if the motherboards VRM can do it (the chip is by chance, im not sure on the board, ryzen master will let you know if its the mobo holding back the OC). Fast RAM benefits Ryzen, what are the specs on the RAM you are running? I saw around 10-15% gains overclocking my Ryzen 2600X, but with RAM overclocking as well I gained around 25% more performance in total with tuning my RAM's timing and clock rate and the CPU overclock.
