Did you try disabling truetone? Mine was also damn awful with truetone enabled (way way too warm for my taste). Disabled that and it's fine.

Nope, thats win8.1+ only. Your best best is a stripped down win10 build.

Thats a very silly argument. Ram is there to be used, not left free. Windows 10 in its stripped down form (you can make it yourself or find online) can easily drop bellow 300MB of system memory "usage" in idle, if thats the thing you're after.

You can always go batshit crazy and wget all your webpages, just like Stallman does. Otherwise, Google is just part of the internet at this point along with all the tracking and profiling. Love or leave it.

First of all, if you have an OEM motherboard, there's a chance bios cant be modded to fit appropriate microcode for xeon to work. Chipset itself should support it though.

Second thing is, that upgrading from q8400 to whats effectively an q9650 wont yield you as much of an performance uplift than you might expect. At best you'll gain a few more average fps, but stuttering will be there, as core2 is just waay to old for newer games to work properly.

My advice is to sell the motherboard, current cpu and ram (there still might be a decent market for 775 platform in your area) and start looking at 1155 or newer. You'll gain a lot more cpu performance (with an i5, gpu will be the limiting factor).
Or just the whole build without the gpu and get a second hand oem pc like dell, hp etc with an i5 2nd gen. These can be had for around 100$ or less, depending on where you are. If you can get something like 50$ for your current rig, thats a small amount of money spent for the performance gain.

hojnikb got a reaction from TechyBen in Red's Overpriced "Mini Mag" Cards - The Real Story
SSD manufacturers are using this prefixes correctly, just like HDD manufacturers use. An 120GB ssd will consist of 120,000,000,000 bytes, which roughly translates to ~111GiB, just the capacity Windows reports as 111GB.
So nothing is really wrong here. Whenever things are power of two or not (like 128GB SSDs) doesn't really matter in this case.

What is wrong is RED marking a 480GB drive as 512GB. They are technically stealing 32GB of space because marketing. Even though the SSD is perfectly capable of being a 512GB if it needs to be (it just a firmware thing to setup the drive as 480GB or 512GB user accessible)

Just FYI, 512 (or 480GB for that matter) SSD does NOT have 512GiB of RAW NAND. It's actually a lot more that that. To quote Billy from Anand:

Another thing to note. With most lesser known SSD brands, that use off the shelf controller and NAND, you can in most cases reflash the controller to use the remaining storage as user accessible (in this case from 480GB to 512GB). It's just a matter of identifying type of controller and downloading the correct MPTool. In most cases, they are publicly available.

No, it's not worth it. NTFS compression is really poor at compressing things (even worse than ZIP). Also, media being nowadays compressed anyway (jpgs, mp4/mkvs, most game files) it will make no difference whatsoever, just kills performance.

Also, if it's an old drive, chuck it trash and forget about it. It's likely on its last legs and will just cause issues.

hojnikb got a reaction from Freeman in Fake Chinese SD Card Scam!
Thats not true at all. Most if not all NAND controllers used (in sd cards mostly appotech or phison) parameters are "easily" modifiable multiple times. The issue here is that sd cards require a special interface to modify such parameters. That interface is specific to each controller manufacturer and uses reserved SD commands, that are not usually exposed.

It's much easier with usb drive, since they don't require special tools, just plug them into usb port and fire up an appropriate MPTool

There is a huge problem with this method; You don't actually know how  controller treats the data coming from host.

While you can limit the partition size to the amount flash device can actually take, you can never be too sure, if controller is smart (or dumb) enough to actually write that data to usable flash sectors instead of just randomly sending bits to /dev/null

For all we know, controller could be programmed to think it actually has a 1TB flash device attached to it; which means it will perform wear levelling using all 1TB worth of sectors, not just 8GB, which is the real size of the flash memory.

For the last f*** time, they are not comparable. AMD has different sensors, so they tend to show much lower temparatures.

hojnikb got a reaction from flibberdipper in How full can an SSD be?
Well, V300 is an entirely different "beast".

Firstly, its not the controller, that was the issue with v300. They switched nand to a much much slower one. Controller itself stayed the same crappy sandforce.

Secondly, sandforce has this wierd issue where it loses write performance over time no matter how full it is. You can lose up to 30-40% of write speed regardless of space usage (obviously uncompressible performance). This is because sandforce relies heavily on compression and doesn't reserve much of the spare nand for garbage collection but instead uses the space, gained by compression for that. That combined with pretty much non working trim means that when you use the drive a lot (especially with non compressible files) it drops write performance pretty badly.

No, sata connectors and cables were designed with future upgradability in mind, thats why a jump from sata1 to 2 and 3 didn't require new cables and connectors.
They just updated the controllers, like they did with usb1.1->2.0

Also remember, 8800 is a dx10 card, so lots of newer games wont work at all.

Just manage your money properly (dont blow it on mary jane or whatever kids do these days) and buy a better card a latter time.
8800GT or other similar cards are just money thrown down the drain (unless you get it for free).
