SATA 1 with a SATA 2 device?

Hi,

So I wanted to get my rig "ADT" working again by putting Ubuntu onto an old PS3 HDD I have. I think it uses SATA 2. Will a SATA 2 cable go into (what I presume is) a SATA 1 slot?

It should work like plugging Usb3 into Usb2.

SATA is SATA... doesn't matter if 1,2 or 3, it'll fit

It just bottlenecks.

Edit: but you wont see much of a performance loss though, because its just a ps3 HDD. If it was something like a SSD then the bottleneck would be obvious.

The sata 2 drive will function at the sata 1 bandwith and speed.

SATA1=1.5 Gbps

SATA2=3 Gbps

SATA3=6 Gbps

 

1.5 Gbps = ~ 187,5 MB/s

Even if the controller can provide only lets say 120 MB/s a cheap mainstream 2.5" HDD won't be bottlenecked...

No, sata connectors and cables were designed with future upgradability in mind, thats why a jump from sata1 to 2 and 3 didn't require new cables and connectors.

They just updated the controllers, like they did with usb1.1->2.0
