SATA 1 with a SATA 2 device?

NeatSquidYT

Hi,

So I wanted to get my rig "ADT" working again by putting Ubuntu onto an old PS3 HDD I have. I think it uses SATA 2. Will a SATA 2 cable go into (what I presume is) a SATA 1 slot?

What I was thinking of buying: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/sata-ii-ra-datapower-to-molex-sata-ii-cable-n67hq

motherboard: P56-5126-out5-hl.jpg

SATA is SATA... doesn't matter if 1,2 or 3, it'll fit

Thanks :) How does the extra bandwith thing work then?

SATA1=1.5 Gbps

SATA2=3 Gbps

SATA3=6 Gbps

1.5 Gbps = ~ 187,5 MB/s

Even if the controller can provide only lets say 120 MB/s a cheap mainstream 2.5" HDD won't be bottlenecked...

I mean as in, do the newer generations have more pins or something to be able to carry the bandwith?

No, sata connectors and cables were designed with future upgradability in mind, thats why a jump from sata1 to 2 and 3 didn't require new cables and connectors.

They just updated the controllers, like they did with usb1.1->2.0
