I dont know if this counts, but it was my first build about 10-11 years ago. Still runs and works but outdated, I just finished my new build this month.

Dabombinable reacted to Monkey Dust in Computer Building Too Hard to be Fun?
As one of this forum's grumpy old men, it is my duty to point out that you young'uns don't know how easy you have it. When I was a lad, we had to make PCs out of coal and our own tears...

A lot of the complaints centred around aesthetics. Firstly that's optional. Secondly, if you do decide to pursue it will cost time and money, as it does with cars, clothes, houses and loads of other things.

Cable management is easier than ever. Look at old case reviews, cable management was an afterthought, or really old, it was non-existent (anyone else remember tucking IDE ribbon cables behind the motherboard?). Plus no more cables for optical drives, and for a quite a lot of us now, no cables for SSDs either. Faults occur less than in the past, things setup themselves. Overclocking and fine-tuning gives such tiny gains these days, it's entirely optional.

I will concede GPU price inflation, that has been brutal over the past 4 years. Other than that, I's say it's no harder than 10 years ago, and a lot easier than 20 years ago.

Dabombinable reacted to YoungBlade in JerryRigEverything and DBrand Sues Casetify for Copyright Infringement
The phrase "Glass is glass and glass breaks" is a catchphrase for JerryRigEverything. It isn't going to be inside any phones. And unlike other copyright traps, like fake trivia or fake towns on a map, Dbrand and JRE did not try to claim that these were real features or facts. They were advertised as Easter eggs.

The highschool I used to go to was still using Windows XP laptops with Celeron M and 512MB RAM in 2013...so 10 years of use isn't out of the question, not with modern low-end hardware and Chrome OS being lightweight.

Dabombinable reacted to Alex Atkin UK in Is Online Piracy ever Justified? A Yemenis Perspective
Yeah the lost revenue was always a joke.  When I used to pirate as a teen it was because we were poor and all my money went into paying for Internet access (it was WAY more expensive back then).  There's quite a few games I pirated first (eg The Elder Scrolls Oblivion), then bought them when I discovered I liked them, as I couldn't afford the loss to buy something I ended up hating.  I literally would never have gotten into gaming at all without piracy and now I have literally thousands of bought games.

I also knew someone who just pirated everything because he could.  I very much doubt he would have bought any of it as he wasn't THAT bothered about the content, it was more a case of "why not if I can?".

I mean you see the same with a lot of people on streaming services.  They watch what is available and it never even occurs to them to actually buy stuff that isn't.  They're just not passionate about the content like those of us still buying physical media for the absolute best image and sound quality.

Dabombinable reacted to DANK_AS_gay in Alan Wake 2 won't run on old GPUs due to lack of DX12 Ultimate features
People keep saying, "oh your 8 year old card won't run it quit bitching" when my 6700XT I purchased SPECIFICALLY because my gpu was 8 years old can't run it either. That's poor optimization if a 2 year old mid-range GPU can't run the game at 60 without running it at 540p.

Dabombinable got a reaction from WereCat in Alan Wake 2 won't run on old GPUs due to lack of DX12 Ultimate features
It really wouldn't be a properly playable experience on my 6700XT despite supporting DX12 ultimate, considering I expect to be able to play games at 1440p on it, and the devs recommend 1080P Med/w FSR Performance - AKA 540P.

Welp, I now have a smol 1999 PC. Albeit with only the ODD not being year perfect (2004 Liteon) or the Sound card, FDD, NIC being early to mid 90's.

A bit of jank was required to get my GA-5AA's PS/2 mouse bracket working.

I have a laptop that was manufactured in 2011, with a first gen i5. The stylus that came with it has multiple levels of pressure sensitivity. But this is Apple, and they know that people will be suckered into buying a pencil without the features simply due to the brand.

Dabombinable reacted to StDragon in Valve urges AMD users to disable the Anti-Lag+ feature, due to causing VAC bans.
It's not AMD's fault. These "anti-cheat" modules are hacks, and in some cases rootkits.

I'm not a dev, but why hasn't an anti-cheat system been built into the latest DirectX API? I think it's long overdue. At least have a separate API that's an industry standard for this function if at all possible.
