Gnator got a reaction from da na in PSA: Do not mix PSU cables
Hi all,
I don't know if this has been mentioned before but I feel like it isn't mentioned enough but don't mix PSU cables. As a casual PC builder, I will admit I don't usually read manuals when I build PCs however after shorting multiple hdds and ssds and not knowing what went wrong. Today I discovered, after shorting my SSD, that EVGA PSU sometimes (depending on the PSU because EVGA doesn't make their own) wires their SATA power differently and it is routed in a way that if you used a cable from another PSU it would short everything powered by that cable. This shorted my LEDs + SSD, thanks EVGA. So here I am with tons of lost data which I would have loved to have kept but it is far too costly to recover and dead LEDs hoping you won't make the same mistake as me.
Thanks

Gnator got a reaction from Shahnewaz in Official Nvidia GTX 970 Discussion Thread
Absolutely agree. It doesn't matter if you are "smart" and are not influenced by spec sheets and only by benchmarks, the simple truth is Nvidia messed up on official documents that have influence on people when they are purchasing hardware. If Intel or any other company decided to say their tri-core processors has quad-core it is not okay no matter what the benchmarks says. We as the consumers needs to push back against Nvidia because this should not be taken so lightly. I am unsure what type of action we should take but we can't let this slide.

Gnator got a reaction from SteveGrabowski in Official Nvidia GTX 970 Discussion Thread
From what I can see 970, with the real specs, is exactly the $220 less than 980 card it should be, and I think the price point is fine. However, this mess with the incorrect specs is not something we should be letting Nvidia off that easily. It might have been a honest mistake but these specs plays a role in influencing people's decision to buy this card

Gnator reacted to Opcode in SSD's To Be More Economical Solution Than HDD's By 2016
Hard drives are more prone to failure in my opinion due to them having mechanical parts. After a prolong period of time the hardware eventually breaks down regardless to how much data has been written to the platter. As to where solid state drives are really only limited by how durable their NAND is. The minimum life expectancy of a quality SSD today is around 10 years. The higher the SSD density the longer the life span. Per example a 1TB 850 Pro would have a life expectancy somewhere in the 30-60 years range. This is why they are backed by a 10 year warranty.

Gnator reacted to dalekphalm in SSD's To Be More Economical Solution Than HDD's By 2016
Most modern SSD's can do 1PB+ (Petabyte) of actual writes. There are a few that have passed the 2PB mark already in tests.
You can expect a 10 year lifespan. More if you write less. An SSD probably won't die before that though unless you write data like a mad-man.
HDD's though, it varies per HDD, and per type of HDD. Enterprise grade tend to last longer, because they are more robust, but the difference in reality isn't that much. I've heard average figures of 6 year life span for HDD's. Some people still run 10 year old HDD's, while other people have had them die within a few years. Most of mine are coming up on 3 to 5 years old. I've only had one failure, and that was a used drive anyway so I have no idea how old it truly was.
'Course none of my SSD's have died yet, but I haven't had them for as long (I have 4 SSD's).

Gnator reacted to Crion in New Apartment Networking Setup Help
If I'm understanding your layout correctly, you have the following:
ISP -> Switch -> Computer
-> Computer
-> Router
where the two computers and router are coming off the switch. If that is the case, your setup is wrong unless you are using your router in AP mode. Your ISP should connect to your router which should connect to the switch which will connect to all the computers. So for example, my setup is ISP (cable modem) connects to my Asus RT-AC66U which connects to a Juniper EX2200 switch which connects to all my devices.

Not multiple routers, but multiple access points, your router is a separate unit. All your access points form 1 big WiFi network. A bit how the cellular system works, but on a much smaller scale.

Gnator reacted to MrAnderson90 in Corsair Obsidian 650d Semi-custom Watercooling Build-log *toxic-fury*
Hello peeps @ LinusTechTips!
I am in this moment starting on a Semi-Custom Build, which i am gonna put into the Lovely Corsair Obsidian 650D Case. I really love the simple design, which makes you focus on anything else (namely the watercooling :) ).
It's so gorgeous! I fell in love with it after i considered going for a 900D build, but quickly thought to myself it was gonna be waaaay too huge for what i have in mind.
So, what did i mean by Semi-Custom? You see, i have recently acquired 2x Asetek Closed Watercoolers from the BOXED set you can buy with an AMD 8150 CPU also.
But that AMD logo is not gonna work out. As many of you might know, this pump has a WHITE (or maybe RGB??) LED in it, to light up the AMD-LOGO. Im gonna sand that away, and then i'm gonna have one of my professionals do 2x nVidia logos on them instead. That i'm looking forward to!
These two coolers are gonna be mounted on these:
They are both gonna be mounted with this:
They will be in bare aluminium when i get them, but i will probably paint them nVidia-green or glossy black. Same goes with the black on the pumps, gonna be glossy. Also the outside of the radiators are probably gonna be green too.
But that's not all, nonono! THe tubes on the Asetek watercoolers are gonne be exchanged for some clear ones, and the water will be... Try guessing, you can do it!
So that is gonna look awesome i hope!
At this moment, i also have a CPU Water Cooler. The Antec Kuhler 920 to be exact.
This is gonna get clear tubing as well, and will be filled with ORANGE water for maximum awesomeness.
I am gonna make the GPU's into a single loop with 2 rads, and the CPU is just gonna stay as it is.. kinda..
Both will go into this, which is gonna sit in the front of the case of course! If i can, and is not too much of a bother, i'm gonna paint the blue ''fan'' green instead, to match the color scheme better.
I have an XFX PRO Semi-modular PSU, 850W XXX ed. which i am gonna fully sleeve in, you guessed it, orange + green!
And that is gonna have this:
I'm not sure about the color-combination yet, but that will come sooner or later! This part i'm assuming is gonna take a while!
I need some cool fans also, so i decided to go with these! 4 green fans, and 2 orange fans, for the single-rads.
And of course i have bought a ton of different UV-lights to light it all up! ;)
I hope this seem like a cool build, and i will update this thread when i start on the build, which is gonna be within a week i think!
EDIT 1
Coolers have been sandpapered, a little =)
...And then a Wild Case appeared!!!
Something arrived in my Mail...
