Atlantisman got a reaction from NiftyMist in Network layout showoff
I had to zoom way out to show everything. This is an older diagram that doesn't quite show everything(i don't have time to make a new one right now).

    ISP: Google Fiber 1Gbp/s

    Switch: Zyxel 1910 24 port

Servers: 9+ Virtal Machines running web servers, Minecraft, Terrraria, domain controllers, file servers and etc.

Physical Servers: 2 ESXi hosts with 32gb of ram each and E3 Xeon CPUs
1 NAS with 12+ TB of storage

Routers: 2x pfSense on my networks and 1x on my brother's network

Access Point: Ubuiqti Unifi & D-Link business access point

Also pictured - My friends little virtual network inside my ESXi hosts, he uses it for development and code storage. And I also have a site-site VPN to my brother's house so we can access each-others resources.

Not pictured - fiance's computers, set top boxes, TV, and etc.

He is not 100% wrong, It USED to need a Crossover cable but now all modern Ethernet ports have MDI-X (meaning they can swap the wires electronically)

Browsing the FreeNAS forum I found a reference to this:

    http://routerboard.com/CRS226-24G-2SplusRM

And here is the Amazon link:

    http://www.amazon.com/MikroTik-CRS226-24G-2S-RM-Ethernet-manageable/dp/B00MDXAVWE

    Here's a less expensive version:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LYFJAYW/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_3?pf_rd_p=1944687762&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00MDXAVWE&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0ZYTK9K92GF676FE5JM1

It also has two 10GbE ports, the difference seems to be a lower level of RouterOS license. The features for license versions can be found here.

This could be a really inexpensive way to get a 10GbE backbone into your network, with cables like these connecting a machine to the switch.

Atlantisman got a reaction from Broseephus in OpenDNS=Bad!
I use opendns all the time, and have clients using opendns for company web filtering. I have never had a problem with it. Also, opendns will do nothing to effect your ping times, or internet speed (though it may increase/decrease page load times while the dns server responds to your browser with the site's IP address, if your DNS server is really terrible).

DNS has nothing to do with much of what you're complaining about anyways.

ESXI - Backup E3 Xeon, 32gb of ram
NAS - 20TB of storage on freenas

I host Plex(for friends and family), game servers, web servers, database servers, automatic downloading servers (usenet), file servers, and etc.

You can use Ubuiquit nano bridge equipment:

Or if the distance is less than 100m end-to-end use outdoor rated ethernet cable.

No, and even if you could there would be driver issues, the router would be too dumb to know how to use the additional hardware. Better just just a range extender or something similar.

VPNing into a network and then remote desktop to the workstation is always a more secure option. Microsoft RDP has had pretty bad security vulnerabilities in the past. So doing it this way just gives an extra layer of protection.

The domain registrar are the people you buy the domain names from(they "point" to your host), but hosts are the people that actually host your web content, many domain registrars do both, and more.

if you really want to spend more the following are also awesome, borrowed from a friend, didn't want to give it back (lol).

Those crimpers work really well with these ethernet ends: http://www.amazon.com/Platinum-Tools-100010C-Connectors-Clamshell/dp/B000FI9VU2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411672719&sr=8-1&keywords=Platinum+Tools+rj45

They are more expensive then traditional ends, but the ability to push through the head makes crimping quicker and easier.

Yes, you will have the option to do config backups in freenas. Also the freenas equivalent to RAID5 is ZFS RAID-Z, functionally the same thing as raid 5 but everything is handled in the background by freenas, and this is why you need quite a bit of RAM to run freenas effectively.

    EDIT: typo.

Atlantisman got a reaction from Dive5885 in Western Digital Green in Raid 0? Is it worth it ?
Green drives are not really meant for RAID configs(especially at RAID 5, 6, 10 and etc). They have a sleep feature that saves power, but also makes raid controllers think they have died early and spit them right out.
