Think My Network Setup Is Overly Complex?

Because who doesn't need a Domain Server in their house?

I've actually wanted to put a domain server online in my house - just dont have the time.

It's a pain in the ass to do it, but I am thinking of puting all my windows computers into a domain.

So, in looking, only a few things

1. I had a pfsense box, and unless you can find an atom-based dual eithernet system to use (supermicro has some - I have one), I found the cons of a full system running 24/7 outweighed the pros :(

2. Need to run PLEX on that home server for awesome media sharing :)

3. Im sure you know this, but, you will not want to run that wireless as a router (oh, and now I see you say dhcp off, so, nevermind ;)

Yup. Have it connected to the switch on lan port 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (honestly I forgot lol)

S'basically my network, but i have 2 subnets for every system. One is a gigabit link to my NAS, the other one is for outside comms only.

Why didn't u put a wifi card into your pfsense box instead of having to have a dedicated access point?

Could you elaborate?

I didnt realise you could have 2 subnets at once?

The NAS connection isn't really a subnet, it's just it's own gigabit switch on it's own dedicated jack seperated from my internet. while my internet connection is just through my ASA and to my modem.

So just into a seperate Ethernet port on your pc?

The only wifi cards I have are shitty usb ones that are not compatible with pfsense and the solution I am using works with no issues.

It was just my old router that the pfsense box replaced.

pfsense is really bad at wifi. Awesome at everything else though.

What do you think? Is my network setup overly complex for my use case? Yes. But is it awesome? Hellz YAH

Looks fairly simple and robust easy to fix if something goes wrong!. Windows home servers are realy usefull even if you only have a few devices, good for easly sharing files.   Not complicated at all!

For comparison this is a complicated home network, it hurts my brain each time i go to add a device: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/199118-network-layout-showoff/?p=3727132

You should post it on the Network layout showoff thread.  There are some good home networks on there! worth a look through :)

On my phone so can't see picture much but from the thumbnail it looks confusing...

Oh and I hate those shitty modem/router combos and despise them. Same hardware as a regular underpowered consumer router with more stuffed inside... yeah.

I have a similar setup. I can't go back because everything I use is stored on a server. I'm thinking of putting all my steam games onto a NAS and also wondering if it would be fast enough.

Interesting you say that. My server has all my steam games on it and it works fine for me. Just make sure you have at least a gigabit link between the two computers. 100meg is slow as balls for game loading.

In my experience, a router-PC adds 10-20ms additional ping time compare to a dedicated router.

Nope, less than 1ms ping to my modem.
