WarlockTheWise reacted to Notional in AMD Gets CUDA Compiler, Going All-In on HPC in 2016-2017
WTF Patrick, has your reading comprehension completely dissapered? AMD is not adopting CUDA what so ever. They have created a new compiler that introduces HSA to GPGPU's and makes everything easier for deveoplers. As for CUDA, they have introduced a syntax that makes it easier for CUDA programmers to port/code for HIP (AMD's new compiler)

Did they really get a CUDA license? The way I read it, it's just a compiler that will accept CUDA code (i.e. it ports CUDA code to something else). On top of that, it says "simplify porting from CUDA to HIP" which to me means "developers will still have to rework their CUDA code to make it work on AMD".
I don't think you need a CUDA license to do this.
Edit (after reading the announcement):
The announcement does not mention AMD getting a license either. The article on Anandtech even clarifies this by saying:
Pretty cool news though. I don't think it will have a big effect on the consumer market but it might help AMD in the HPC market.

Nvidia offered CUDA for free several times. AMD turned its nose up at supporting a proprietary standard. Now it seems finally someone has a lick of sense.

AMD/ATI's problem has always been the "Nvidia isn't very collaborative" argument, and frankly that's BS to me.

PCPer doesn't have an NVidia bias just because they point out flaws in AMD's technology; pointing things like this out in their reviews is their entire job. If a reviewer missed something like this in their review then I wouldn't watch their reviews.

WarlockTheWise reacted to Victorious Secret in Mini-News: Windows 10 will have 2 different web browsers.
Chrome is one of the worst browsers on the market right now, so I'd get off the bandwagon and try some alternatives.
I swore left right and centre by Chrome, but Chrome is just bad at resource management and loves burning battery for no real reason. Im happy I stopped using it, got a good 2 hours of battery life back just by switching browsers.

I would never pay for a ram drive and if your computer does not suck the gains are often marginal gains in most games.
I use IMDisk to create a ram drive for free, it can write to Physical memory for speed or write to an image file for persisantce, also a image file and be preloaded before use, or cached as it used.
Then use Symbolic links to point the to the ram drive from an existing location.

Personally I use raided HDD and am happy with the performance, however if your running steam games from a USB drive I can see the advantage for a ram drive otherwise this is a gimmick.

Exactly no benefit of this over a SSD. Unless you want to be in game on the next loaded map first yet still be limited by the servers response anyways.

Awesome! I hope we can get to $180k, I'd love to see Yvonne on the WAN show, I bet that she'd absolutely destroy Linus and tell everyone all about how annoying/frustrating it is being married to him.
