Riot Games bans professional players that stream Dota 2, HotS, and ANY MOBA

Psychatog

http://www.ongamers.com/articles/riot-season-4-lcs-contracts-stipulate-players-cannot-stream-dota-2-blizzard-games/1100-261/

Apparently the contract they are putting out for Season 4 LCS states streaming any MOBA game that is not League of Legends will result in the termination of your account and/or professional contract.  I guess this is no different then a contract stating in the NHL that says you cannot be traded to teams XYZ, or you are a restricted free agent.  Thoughts?

It's going to be fun watching someone just sit there looking at a screen when they have like a 30/40 minute queue.

That a real dick move, but they are getting a shitload of flag on reddit for that, I thinks it's very possible that they are going to reverse that.

Guess its pretty fair to do this as if you are on a contract with them you should stream their games not other MOBA Games. So guess it means to never sign contracts from Riot? :)

Well looks like riot does not want lol pros to stream anything that is not related to league. This includes no dota or blizzard games and whole lot more titles. However alcohol user is not listed. On phone sorry don't know how to quote

We say this all the time: we want League of Legends to be a legitimate sport. There are some cool things that come from that (salaried professional athletes, legitimate revenue streams, visas, Staples Center), but there’s also a lot of structural work that needs to be done to ensure a true professional setting.

We recognize there may be some differences of opinion in the perception of pro players’ streams. In the past, pro gamers only had to worry about their personal brands when streaming and, at most, may have had to worry about not using the wrong brand of keyboard to keep their sponsor happy. Now, however, these guys are professionals contracted to a professional sports league. When they’re streaming to 50,000 fans, they’re also representing the sport itself.

I can’t stress enough how these guys in the LCS are on the road to being real, legitimate athletes. This is new territory for a lot of teams (especially in esports), because the transition goes from being a group of talented individuals to being real icons of a sport and a league. Similarly, you probably wouldn’t see an NFL player promoting Arena Football or a Nike-sponsored player wearing Reebok on camera. Pro players are free to play whatever games they want – we’re simply asking them to keep in mind that, on-stream, they’re the face of competitive League of Legends.

Whalen Rozelle.

While the brand notion is true, you can't have your sponsored players using competing brands, it's a little different when they're playing other games. Sure a professional sports player might play basketball for example, but it is wrong for him to also play some football if he likes? That's how I see this.

I hope league is paying them a ton of money to dictate what they can and can't do on their off time.

Well, first of all they're not banned from PLAYING other games, just from streaming them. As for drawing an analogue between this and traditional sports, it's less like not being allowed to play basketball because you're a football player, and more like not being allowed to play for teams other than the one you're on. Still not perfect, but that's the way I see it.

Ah I see. How do these pro players make their income? Sponsorship from brands they endorse - KB, mouse etc, streaming obviously and events depending on how pro they are. Is that it? Do they take money directly from Riot? If they did then I'd understand but I'm not exactly sure how the specifics work.
