Crapy Laptop->BOINC till death

Guest

Welcome to the story of the most powerful BOINC rig on this planet:
post-40573-0-00242200-1383593568_thumb.j

Ok here are the specs:

Intel pentium M @1400Mhz (single core/32bit) OC to 1680Mhz
ATI Radeon 9000
512Mb DDR1 RAM (Upgraded to 1GB)
CD/RW+DVD/R
2xUSB 2.0
WLAN 802.11a/b (is dead)

Awesome so far, right?

Now let's see some closeups:

Ok, some cool details about this beast: This was my work PC for over 5 years. Now we changed to Macs here at Work. As I got my Mac I bought this PC from my work  for 60€.  I also upgraded the RAM to 1(!)GB
I used it as Linux PC to try out my Linux knowledge and play around with it.
Was funny but now I've got an other PC for my Linux experiments.
So this PC was in the shelf for almost a year.
As I now started boincing (in the LTT team!!) I thought I could use this PC to boinc until… well it dies. I don´t need it anymore.

Let's get started:

Probably I could use Linux for BOINC. I tried to install Ubuntu 13.04 32bit. But: My CPU is not compatible to pea...

FAIL
Good old Windows XP:
Do you remember the days when you got your OEM windows on a CD/DVD? Better than this silly restore partitions. So I installed windows XP and SP3+274(!) Updates+30Drivers.
I was not able to activate my WLAN card... It's dead.
But I found a old WLAN802.11b stick which came with my very first WLAN Router I ever bought (see the crack in the edge of the laptop and the display „assembly“? Sweet!).
post-40573-0-94057400-1383593946_thumb.j

We have got a decent 12.5down/2up (MB/s) over WLAN ac here. With the stick it turns into 3down/0.5up. Anyways...enough for down and uploading some Work units.

I know what you are thinking: WTF? Is this guy a complete dumb? BOINC with an Pentium M@1,4Ghz...
NO! I'll overclock the SHIT out of this Machine! (Not really)
But this OC is a bit different.
This  laptops BIOS has almost no options... I can't change my voltages or multipliers. But with ClockGen I am able to change the Clocks by OCing the FSB:

post-40573-0-84608500-1383594012_thumb.j

Finally got around of an 20% boost of performance. Everting stable at 70-80°C running Prime.

When I try to reach higher clocks the system instantly freezes or BSOD. But I am pretty happy with a 20% OC without canging VCore and stuff.

The cooling is ultra loud now so what do we do?

A little bit dusty in here? No way!

This is why I absolutely hate cheap WLP:

After some Cleaning and Noctua NH-N1 we have around 62°C and a much lower fan noise.

So now this thing is running BOINC 24/7 but how long will it take to kill it? And which part is going to die first?

Taking bets below… who is correct about the part that fails first gets a cookie from me!

Na… I am only doing BOINC on the CPU. The GPU is not supported by BOINC.

But if so you will get one!

What a rip-off :P...

BTW no driver for your WLAN-card that would amaze me... Can you give me the DEV_XXXX (Hardware ID) & VEN_XXXX (Vendor ID) from your WLAN-card?

There are no VEN ore DEVICE numbers but:

Its a BCM 94306MP rev 4

And I do really think it broke... Even the bios says "unknown pci device"
