In a surprising and unexpected turn of events, 4Chan has been sold to the creator of 2channel (also known as 2ch). What is 2ch? It's Japan's largest and most popular online community. Christopher Poole, founder of 4Chan and commonly known as moot, declined to disclose the terms of the acquisition and does not expect to serve an active role in 4Chan's future development.

 

So, nobody knows why moot sold off 4Chan, and he won't tell us... I'll make some speculation here: He doesn't want to be associated with 4Chan anymore. If you've ever been on 4Chan before, you know that there are some cool places, some funny places, some dark places, some really messed up places, and some places that should never exist. If that's the case, sure he may have founded it, but I don't blame him for wanting to distance himself from 4Chan now. At least he sold 4Chan to a company familiar with dealing in anonymous shady user business and picture business.

And to the OP, the reason moot wanted to leave 4chan is because he had been running the site for over 10 years and there comes a point when you want to just do something else. The easiest way to do this was to just hand off the entire thing to someone else. He went over all this in his final Q&A video.

 

 

The video is over 7 hours long if you want to have some fun and find out something new.

they are the same.  2chan and 2channel are separate.  2chan goes by Futaba mostly, though, and was inspired by 2channel when there was a UNIX problem with 2channel.
