Hey.

 

Do any of you guys (or knows someone) that builds PC as a job? It does not have to be full time but still...

 

I was thinking if I could make cash on the side doing it. Not even sure how I would start tho.

You can definitely make money on the side building computers, fixing them and installing os, but there are many many people who do the same thing so don't expect many clients.

This is my dream job... :/

PC building isn't where you want to be for money.

 

PC Repair is the right place.

 

Also, if you think about it. You're going to be building a lot of APU based systems most of the time. Very rarely you'll get to build anything over 1.5K

I used to do it as a "job" of sorts when I was in highschool and I still do it every now and then, if the opportunity arises.

Not sure you can make a full time job out of it, though.

OverclockersUK are sometimes looking for system builders, although they're in Newcastle, so not sure how close you are to them. 

 

EDIT: Your best bet is to look for a PC system technician job or something similar, given that you have experience, in a company that build PC's as a main or side role.

As above... Unless you get into custom designs and become known for it, there isn't much money in building PCs..

 

The issue is most people want something basic and you can't beat dell and the like for the low end with warranty etc to make money (You can but profit is slim and doesn't take into account any time you would spend fixing if there is an issue or RMAing parts etc)

 

Repairing PC's on the other hand eliminates these issues and then it's just time for money.

 

The last option is to be a system builder for someone like OCUK, SCAN, NCIX or whatever... BUT they don't pay very well usually. Also, once you've built a few pcs of a budget.. it's pretty standard stuff.

My job at my local college entails PC building. I'm half way doing a lot of 80, so far this Summer.

 

It's like any job - the shine fades after a while, though I find playing with hardware theraputic, so it is good.

 

Next load of machines are going to have R9 270X GPUs in them, hehe.

Just start it off like any LTT post in the new builds and planning

 

Budget, Size of PC and Purpose of usage are important

 

I already have that hobby outside of my main tasks, but all I do is recommend them parts and let them experience building a PC

Some people advertise computer building on Gumtree as you can post adds for services there for free, could give that a go i guess?

Yeah was thinking of just putting something on facebook. Would be cool to start with friends and people i know.

Biggest way to make money in the PC business, scam old people and people who don't know much. Clear cookies for $200 and do a premium virus scan for an extra $50. Otherwise tech businesses wouldn't make nearly as much as the percent of average to enthusiast is so lop sided they have to rely on another source of income

Yeah was thinking of just putting something on facebook. Would be cool to start with friends and people i know.

Thats how I do it, well just by word of mouth to be honest, built my mates a couple of computers, and a few for family members, I dont really advertise at all, just people recommending me. Granted I did it without a profit but I class it as a hobby rather than a means of work.

Another way to get money is offer to do a monthly/quarterly health check on systems you sell.

 

Or build using cheap parts that you know will need replacing at some point, etc.

There are big companies in the UK that have huge warehouses filled with aprts and benches, to mass-produce systems for large client companies. Novatech has a video on it somewhere.

I'm building PCs for free because I like to do it. If I would need to on-site troubleshoot, install software or OS, I'd take 10€/h for it. Unless member of family or other reasons (like college). Bigger companies take 60-80€ for doing builds. I would have to ask too little to it be worth it to compete with them.

This is something I've considered doing on the side for a while. If you can get the odd person to pay you to fix their computer or whatever, you could totally do that. Building new computers for people isn't something that happens that often, you'd be better off doing repair and troubleshooting, because that is much more common a problem and much more lucrative. Charge like $5-10 or something for cleaning someone's registry (where a good amount of problems come from most of the time - and the effect of cleaning is near instant) and if the people you help recommend you to others, you'll make a nice little amount for your trouble. If someone wants you to build them a computer, have them pay for the parts and a surcharge for you building it for them and testing it.

As Linus who have came to Singapore's Famous Sim Lim Square

 

there are shops which not only sell PC components but they do system building for customers as a free service

 

there are sort of pre-determined builds but you can pick and choose parts for your own PC.

 

and they can do it in 30 mins but you will need to do your own cable management and OS install.

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I still do it as part of my main job, however it terms of just extra on the side, very occasionally when a friend asks or something but don't make any profit on it so its hard to call it a job...
