The Big 980Ti Information Thread

Zerreth

If you own a 980Ti and vote on the poll, please consider posting your Make + Model, Base / Boost / Memory @ Voltage & Temps, ASIC , Purchase Date & Price Paid. Thanks !

▌█▐ HOW & WHY

The point of this thread is to gather all 980Ti info into one place and to avoid the endless thread reposts.

How can you help ? Link to this Thread:

The Big 980Ti Information Thread
Content is hidden in spoiler tags to keep things manageable.

"Yay I bought one, here are my findings."

"What is the best cooler ?"

"What cards overclock the best ?"

"Which one should I get ?"

In other forums this is gathered in one thread, making it very easy to have an overview of things.

In the LTT Forum, it is utter chaos. So this will be an attempt to streamline things.

I'll try to keep this post updated with all relevant information, please send me a PM if you want me to look at something or (empty) quote me.

Also keep in mind that updating this post with all information on all variants takes time, I'll do my best to keep it up to date.

Full disclosure:

I do not do these tests myself, rather they are a collection of results posted in various reviews all over the web.

Any sources will be credited and linked to.

▌█▐ TEMPS VS NOISE

Note that Noise is a measure of absolute uniform intensity, the human ear is not uniform in its sensitivity.

For instance low pitch sounds might be less audible than high pitch sounds, so keep that in mind when viewing these graphs.

All non-reference coolers stop their fans under 60°C except the water cooled designs, so they're fully silent.

Asus Strix variant seems to do way better in later reviews, there is talk of a production issue in early samples.

Gigabyte G1 variant has received a new BIOS (F4) which lowers the fan speeds & noise at the cost of temps, bringing it more in line with the MSI.

▌█▐ Q&A

What is ASIC Quality and how does it affect overclocking?

With 980 and later gpus including titanX, the scaling on air/water has all but almost gone. I would say about 95% of all maxwell 980,titan-X, and 980ti gpus NO MATTER what vga brand pcb it is on, DO NOT SCALE with more voltage than 1.25v-1.275v at temps warmer than 25c or so. This is exactly why almost every moderate-good ASIC TitanX, 980, and 980Ti clocks around 1550Mhz MAX AVERAGE at say 45-60°C load temps. Cards with very good ASIC value (75% and up) will tend to have the most "overclocking", but just like about every other Maxwell GPU, they cannot overvolt past 1.23v-1.25v. So highest ASIC cards like 80%+ are almost always going to be the ones that can 1600Mhz+ on air/water, and again they do it pretty much WITHOUT overvolting over 1.23v-1.25v. Maxwell GPUs with lower ASIC value like 65% will not be so great on air/water because these low asic GPUs need voltage to scale compared to match the overclock of the high ASIC GPUs ( using same voltage range 1.23-1.25v )

Yes, and it would be cool to have a big list of all users overclocks, price they paid, date of purchase, etc... instead of having to sift through 400 forum pages. That way you can make a more informed purchase.

I bought a G1 Gaming from gigabyte. However it is currently shipping so i cant post ASIC, boost clocks, OC... I'll edit that all in once it arrives.

My main reasoning behind the g1 was honestly the 7 different logo colors, Im a person that would sacrifice ~1% performance for more customization available on hardware. I hate having a white/red build with a green led from the graphics card right in the middle.

And with the G1 its one of the stronger out of the box cards anyways so im really not sacrificing that much performance. Can't wait for it to actually arrived payed for 2 day shipping because it was only $5 more on newegg.

Purchased from Newegg.com for $689.99 (before shipping) will update with all specs once it arrives and i can tinker around with it.

-- Ok it arrived and I had my time to tweak this baby out... first off there was some coil whine but its really not that bad and i was kind of expecting it so no real big let down.

found a modded bios for extra % power limit / mVs my card has passed a firestrike @ 1551mhz core clock and 7800 mem clock.

firestrike (normal):

graphics score: 22109

overall score: 16979

this thing is pretty freaking beast.. i probably got a pretty lucky overclocking card because most people are topping out @ around 1500, even with modded bios i was stable at 1528 pre modded bios.

ASIC : 72.0%

and this red led to match my case is amazing.

would definitely recommend

I have 2 evga GTX 980 ti SC reference pcb's  with EK GTX titan Water blocks on them.

got each @ newegg for 669 + Ca tax USD

card one will sit over 1600 overclocked second starts crashing as soon as i pass 1520

variable boost one let me set a constant clock even if using Kboost

normal every day clock as set to 1467 temps of cards never go over 40C in the loops

will add  more to the post in a little bit

from what I've heard and read the wall on 980ti so far seems to be 1550mhz :/ I hope I can at least get 1500 on mine when It shows up (Wednesday it's supposed to be here , but I ain't holding breath on that)

You running a custom bios for more voltage ? Or just stock one ?

Please quote me or tag me if your trying to talk to me , I might see it through all my other notifications ^_^

the current list of dead cards is as follows 2 evga gtx 980ti acx 2.0 , 1 evga gtx 980 acx 2.0 1600mhz core 2100mhz ram golden chip card ... failed hardcore , 1 290x that caught fire , 1 hd 7950 .

normal bios just running the +87 mv card one is really good card 2 is the trouble maker for me

it doesn't like  me adding core clock in multiples of 3 for some reason i can go one mhz up or down and it will be fine

if i dont even do a manual oc  both card boost to 1380 on stock settings

Does anyone have or have information on the Zotac amp edition?

Well, It's a stock PCB with clocks just slightly higher than reference. The cooling will give you extra OC headroom, but I would imagine that Zotac GPU's are binned and sold by their clock speeds. If so, you may not get the overclocks you want.

Zotac Reference (not binned in the past, may be binned now)

Zotac ArticStorm

Zotac AMP

Zotac AMP Omega

Zotac AMP Extreme

Noise seems quite high, you may want to check with Praesi, it might have a very low pitch so it isn't as audible.

That's no moon, that's a death ball !

curious question , so there's an extra spot on the pcb for another 8 pin but on the back , could i solder in an extra 8 pin and it work still and allow more voltage or something like that? (one of the most oddball questions ive ever had , if you need clarification i can try and find some pics to show what i mean)

Does anyone have or have information on the Zotac amp edition?

HI.

I use the amp! extreme

My Case Fans are 6x Corsair Fan SP140 and 1x Corsair Fan SP120.

When the amp!extreme reach 60° the 3x90 Fans start, but i only here the Casefans which have a noiselevel of 29.3 dB(A).

I use the Corsair 750t Case, which isnt a silent build, but i dont hear the Graphicscard under load inside.

So got mine in a few hours ago (Gigabyte G1) ASIC = 71.6%

There is coil whine, but its not annoying or anything. (Note I use headphones)

Fans stay under 60%, usually @ 55%, making them blend in with the rest of the fans. I'm hitting 70C max.

@ unadjusted voltage (1.168V) and unadjusted 100% power target I'm able to have 1262Mhz Base, 1464Mhz Boost & 8Ghz Memory Clocks.

My first goal is to find rock solid clocks @ stock power/voltage. I need more long term testing to verify these. Haven't dialed in the memory yet, core clock is more important.

Paid 786 € including shipping. Recovered 30€ though sale of Nvidia Metal Gear Solid Key. 23 July 2015.
