GOG galaxy client now in open beta, download now!

AlexGoesHigh

screen-client-1x.png

yes the gog competitor to steam, galaxy is now open to everyone after a invite only alpha, right now it lacks most of the features promised in the product page, but they are coming and should be implemented before the stable release, the most interesting one, is that everything is actually optional, you can turn off auto update or even roll back to a previous version if the newer breaks the game, notifications, and even game achievements, lastly gog being the drm free advocates they are you don't need this to play any game bought through their service, you can still go to your account in the web and simply download your games like you used to

you can sign up and download here: http://www.gog.com/galaxy

That's the beauty of pc.

Open platform.

You don't have to go back.

Can use both.

The existence of multiple digital stores such as Origin, Steam, Gog, uplay, D2D etc is a good thing. I see a lot of people here complaining about some games not being on Steam. But in reality diversity is our greatest strength on the pc platform. For that we sacrifice a bit of the straightforwardness of consoles, a small price to pay. Steam are the market leaders now because they are the pioneers and they are largely responsible for the PC gaming resurgence. But it may not always be that way... In five years it's possible that GOG or some other upstart will have more market share.

I'm more excited for the day that Valve willingly removes the DRM from their games and services like GOG will push them to make it happen sooner, I hope.

GOG Galaxy Client requires Mac OS X 10.8 or newer. Also available for Windows and soon for Linux.

Really weird they listed OS X first.

And I'd say I'm disappointed by it not being available on Linux yet, but in all honesty even though I use Linux for most things, since I do have to keep Windows around, I might as well game there so that I can keep my Linux install lean.

I guess it's time to utilize launch box more, it's really quite good piece of software.

YES!

Oh man I am so happy for this. If anyone can push Steam to be better its GOG at this stage. This is the competition we deserve!

Can't wait to get to home and try it out.

One beautiful step towards a distant but hopefully Steam-free future.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Realistically, I don't see that happening. Now bear with me, this can potentially become the place to be for indie games, but AAA publishers would literally rather go bankrupt than go DRM free, so Steam will be there for those.

Not enough people care about Steams DRM. So, I don't see them removing it anytime soon.

I've been using it for a couple months. Its good; barely uses any resources, quick and responsive and evolves quickly. I like it.

Mind you GOG can do no wrong in my mind. So many great games. No DRM. Witcher 3 incoming. Can't wait.

Looks like a more modern version of steam (does anyone else think Steam UI looks like crap?). I just don't want to deal with ANOTHER game client. I have trouble managing steam, origin and uPlay as it is.

I hope GoG does well as it seems to have policies that I wish Steam had such as being DRM free, fair prices for non-US people and a money back guarantee. I also hope that some bigger publishers notice it so it becomes more than just a place to buy indie games.
