Gabe Newell- "zero percent of people get motion sick" using the Vive VR headset

ahhming

Interviewed at GDC, Valve boss Gabe Newell said that until now VR headsets have been the "world's best motion sickness inducers," but that "zero percent of people get motion sick" when using his company's headset.

That's partly thanks to its Lighthouse motion-tracking system, which is capable of tracking users accurately as they move around a space. In The Verge's hands-on experience with the Vive at GDC, Lighthouse was able to give a highly precise picture of what the wearer was doing in a 3D space, a feature that helps our brains cope with the disconnect between actual physical motion and the virtual world our eyes see.

I doubt that. I get motion sickness from just about anything, and I know this thing would kill me.

I feel so sorry for everyone that this happens to. But why the fuck did you make gaming and tech your hobby if it makes you sick so easily.

I don't even care about motion sickness I don't see this VR going anywhere. It'll be like their steam controller and change every few months and never actually be released to the public in any decent numbers. I don't think valve should be wasting their time attempting to make hardware for consumers, I see some elements of it being incorporated into the Rift and possibly future VR headsets so I by no means think it's a bad thing I just don't see it ever going anywhere as a Valve product.   (Clearly I use and like steam but I'm not one of the many hanging from Gabes nuts)

Look fwd to side by side reviews of this vs rift. Expect both to be great- both companies have spent a ton on R&D. Wonder if occulus' Linux support will be as good as valve.

I'm really excited to try some kind of vr.

Some games would really come into their own with it.

I nearly died playing alien isolation with oculus at EGX London last year, had never played the game before and since the 3d perception is amazing it was like really walking around the station

seeing the alien stalking in the dark was freaking terrifying, and it made me jump at one point and I screamed a bit and everyone laughed at me hahaha

It's good they don't have problems with latency and headtracking which would casue motion sickness. But realistically most of games will introduce some problems with motion sickness unless your character is sitting in the chair and not moving.
