GTX 960 vs R9 280

JorenBus

Hi,

Which one should I choose? I don't really want a 280x due to its high price, so I'm thinking about getting a 280.

Is the 280 better than the 960, with its extra GB of VRAM?

It's to play games like BF4 and GTA 5.

I play on 1080p.

Thanks

R9 280 Is better than the 960

i would recommend the r9 285, which at a same price even outperforms the 960 even more

960 performs as well as a 770 which is faster than a 280?

The 960 is better than the 280, although it's significantly more expensive. Here in the states, the non-cheapest 960 is the same price as the cheapest 280x, which is a better card (or the cheapest 280x is $10 more than the cheapest GTX 960). The 280 is better situated to higher levels of AA and things that need more VRam like Shadows of Mordor, but the 960 is perfectly capable of 1080p and performs better than the 280, but not the 280x. However if you can afford a 960, you can afford a 280x which is a better card.

285 if possible, if can't 280, the GTX 960 just isn't as powerful as speculated, especially compared to the 970 (w/o vram issues)

The vote is unanimous, even at 3 votes, the R9 280, but I'd go for R9 280X myself. ;)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

boom, this is a benchmark of the 960 vs 280 and shows the bus bandwidth bottle-necking the vram

"4k comparison"

Well, that's not a bandwidth problem, that's a flat out 2GB problem. You can't cherry-pick benchmarks. The 960 IS faster than the 280 in games that don't use that extra 1GB of VRAM, however it's not faster than the 280x, which is what actually is near it in terms of price.

Cheapest 280x:

XFX DD, for $205

Cheapest 960:

Plenty of them at 200

Cheapest 280:

XFX or Powercoloer, both at $180

Well the 285 only has 2GB of VRAM, won't that be a problem for future games like GTA V, Battlefield Hardline and such?

Yeah, let's use a card at a resolution you'll ever it at.

Here is a picture of the 960 "working" at 1080p not 4k.

(Your response : Huh no one plays with filters maxed out  and shadow of mordor is an unoptimized piece of dung)

I vote for the 280 or 280x.

Yes, choose the one game where it doesn't do well except all of the others? Bias is forreals in this thread.

No, it doesn't.

It performs quite a bit worse than a 770 across the board. Where did you even get that from?

I dunno, looking at a dozen benchmarks and different testing methodologies. The 960 performs on par with a 770 in damn near most benchmarks. Stop cherry picking shit and look at the whole picture.

Very funny. Fact is, the 960 is completely irrelevant in 2015. 2GB of VRAM and that tiny memory bus severely cripple the card. An R9 280 or 280x will perform better and give you 50% more memory, making crossfire a viable option to some extent.

you think im lying? if you're sure, then look at this benchmark where the 285 destroys the 960

I tested 3 games with 2 GB vram , at ultra they used 1.7 -1.9 vram

The games were dragon age insquistion , far cry 4 , ground zeroes.

Now time for a pop quizz .

Is vram usage gonna go :

A- Up in future games.

B- Gonna be lower or stay the same in future games.

If games already use almost 2 GB of vram a 2 GB card isnt future proof.

You are the one thats biased here .

I vote that the OP saves 30 bucks and gets a 280x.

I'm not cherrypicking anything here, look at any of the games in that review, the 960 is always behind the 770. If you want to argue your point then show us some benchmarks , shouldn't be too hard when you've seen "dozens" of them.

Or we could just ignore tests and assume that Nvidia knows what they're doing and wouldn't bottleneck their own card to save a little bit of manufacturing costs. :P

Just a small question, the 960 will support DX12, will the 280 support it as well?

So I guess for games like BF and GTA5, and for to be future proof, I should go for the 280?

LOL at ignoring benchmarks , what a fanboy thing to do.

Yes the 280 will support dx 12 and be more future proof but op do youself a favor and save up for a 280x.
