Elon Musk Wants to Build the Internet in Space

AndThenThereWas1

Elon Musk wants to build out a network of satellites to provide internet for Earth and eventually for Mars. He expects the project to cost around $10 billion and take about 5 years before they "get off the ground".

the satellite internet project would make for fast, cheap global internet that isn't impeded by terrestrial wires. "The speed of light is 40 percent faster in the vacuum of space than it is for fiber," he says, explaining that internet provided by satellites in low orbit can serve those in sparsely populated areas. However, the dream doesn't end there; with his eyes already on a future Martian colony, the SpaceX founder wants connectivity to reach the Red Planet when mankind eventually lands there.

"It will be important for Mars to have a global communications network as well," he says. "I think this needs to be done, and I don’t see anyone else doing it."

Musk expects the project to take $10 billion and at least five years to get off the ground. In the meantime, SpaceX's resources will be devoted to making satellites in addition to the rockets and vehicles it already manufacturers and tests.

I think this is awesome. It could potentially create an internet with no censorship. It will also be a great tool for those with no access to internet. My only caveat is that I do not see this replacing our current wired internet because the ping time will probably be massive. Hard to game on a 300-500ms ping.

Hmm, corporate controlled internet by one company or government controlled internet?  Lets hope there's a third option I haven't considered yet.

he plans to deliver 100 metric tons of equipment and many people to Mars by 2040.

While governments wants to protect themselves from other countries and their own citizen and do government founded researches into war and other technology that are show off, Elon Musk comes, and from his own money he creates SpaceX and Mars colonization. He is the man
