LG sells a record 14.5 million smartphones as profits nearly triple

LG has just reported a record quarter for mobile phone sales, showing that it's taking advantage of a slump from arch-rival Samsung. LG sold 14.5 million handsets over the last quarter, its highest total ever and 20 percent more than last year -- with more than a third of those LTE models. It chalked up most of the success to its well-reviewed top-of-the-line smartphone, the G3, along with strong sales of its mid-range L products. LG's mobile division scooped up KRW 3.6 trillion ($3.5 billion) and put an end to three straight quarters of losses. Home entertainment also performed well, climbing 3 percent on the strength of higher-margin UltraHD 4K sets

I'm glad other Android phone companies are getting money instead of Samsung

wow, not a bad effort, only got another 55 million to catch Samsung and 20million to catch apple, but definitely closing the gap.

It seems like every year a different smartphone brand gets the top recommended phone every year,  Apple with the iphone 4s, Samsung with the S3, HTC With the HTC One  and now LG with the G3.

Gonna need my boys at Nokia to try and do the same.

Windows phone needs more support, dammit

WP had a bad start to this year,  it was on a steady incline from 2011 till the end of last year but lost almost 0.5% in market share in the first three months 2014,  It will be interesting to see if this is a nokia thing a blip or what.   Some of us had hopes it would keep increasing and off some serious options and push apple/android a little further, but alas not yet.

I think overall interest was dying out in the beginning of the year because of how behind WP8 is at the moment, and with phones like HTC One M8 just dominating the Android market

But since then Nokia has been releasing a lot of better phones, including the one I have currently, the Lumia Icon. Some phones are coming out with the VASTLY updated WP8.1, I'm on the waiting game for Verizon to release the update already. WP8.1 is actually a really good OS, it just needs more people to give it a chance.

Even Samsung is porting their Galaxy 5 to WP aren't they? Under a different alias of course

there were rumors the s3 was going to be released in a win8 flavor.  But I haven't seen anything of that.  There are videos on youtube where people have installed 8 on a few galaxy models, so it's possible, but I don't know if it is official.

congrats to LG

i really respect their business strategy

the marketed their phones really well

their  version of the "skin" isnt heavy and confusing

they actually friggen LISTENED to the consumers and used a bigger battery

and finally their phones arnt ultra expensive

How is the bloatware situation on LG branded phones?

I have only used the Nexus branded phones from them.

I know Samsung is quite infamous for packing devices to the hilt with trash software, have LG fallen into the same trap or are they nice and clean?

They are clean enough if I remember but I haven't physically gotten my hands on a G3 although my korean friends have never mentioned bloatware. (But I'm almost certain there is a ban in RoK on doing such things now or at least talks of it)

OK, does that potentially have the weight to stop Samsung from doing it overseas or are we strictly talking Korea?

A law against bloatware sounds idyllic.

Most likely just Korea, I can't imagine them fining Samsung for selling a phone to Verizon and banning Verizon from putting Carrier bloatware on it.

This article stresses it has to be removable but I'm almost certain its any.
