How long does it usually take for prices to drop when a new series launches?

First off, I would just like to clarify that I know, nothing is certain at this point. I know that noone knows anything for sure. It's just that I haven't been following the hardware releases closely, for a very long time, and I am curious. :)

Question is in the thread title.

It depends what.

Most PC components will not drop in price because of a newer version. Its just that the newer version is more expensive.

That can be true, but more often a particular part is released at a price point, and the new components will come out at the same price point thus the old parts drop in price, even if just a little

As for the graphics cards i would estimate about 2 months. You have to look out for deal in eBay with left over warranty.

On the other hand you can get great deals on the hardware of the last gen. I myself am hoping to pick up a GTX 780 for under 250€.

who cares...

I said most PC components do not.

Cases do not. PSUs do not. Hard drives and SSDs do not. RAM does not. coolers do not.

Motherboards, CPUs, and GPUs become discontinued and are replaced by a newer version. The only way you can obtain last-generation stuff is by buying it second hand used.

I really don't like buying refurbished, anything really. It's pretty annoying at times, I could have saved tons of money throughout my life, if not for this personality issue. :P

I do plan on getting a second 780 at some point, so a little bit of savings is always welcome. Not that I'm in any kind of hurry, my current setup runs anything I play on it for now.

I am not talking refurbished, i am talking 2nd hand. Refurbished stuff is used, was broken, then fixed and probably will break again. 2nd hand is running, it will run and if there's warranty on it, it will keep running. Then there's of course luck of the draw and you can be scammed but that's what god gave us a brain for. :D

Well it is very unlikely the 780 will drop in price when the 880 is released. Retailers will probably put them on sale though as they try to get rid of their last stock, so you might be able to get one at a discount.

But after they have sold all their stock the 880 will replace them, and you will no longer be able to buy 780s new in store. So don't wait too long :)

You're probably 100% correct, I'm just being a silly worrywart. I generally don't trust people, I'm too much of a pessimist. :P

They don't really drop... 680s and 670s are still pretty costly, it takes sometimes 2 years to notice a price difference.

Yeah, I'm keeping close eyes on all of the sites I usually buy from to check for discounts. It's not the end of the world, if I end up not getting a second card, though. I may even save more money and see how the 880ti does performance wise (if it's even going to exist, obviously).

I bought i5 4690K (emergency, I sold my pentium 3258 as I was not happy.. at all) at £178 (inc postage) and it's now £160 2 weeks later :P

Similar things for GPUs I guess.

Yeah I also paid more for my 4790k, because I was impatient and bought it pretty much instantly as it appeared on the site. :P

Usually when new generations are released they are somewhat more expensive the first couple of weeks right after release and stay then pretty stable in pricing for a longer time.

The problem especially with GPUs is, that midrange and lower end models go nowadays through rebranding processes. They just take the card give it the next gen name and resell it (GTX680 --> GTX770 / 7970 --> R9 280X).

The real high end GPUs of a last generation are getting retired as soon as they have they legit successor and you can't buy them (other than rest stock or used on ebay i.e.) anymore.

I'm just waiting to see the GTX780 becoming the GTX870 when Maxwell hits the market. Sure it will be cheaper but not ridiculously cheap. The GTX770's price is still high compared to what this card is in all reality.

I don't personally advertise it, but the second hand prices will pretty much instantly drop.
