I know synergy is a sponsor of LTT but...

corrado33

Synergy doesn't play well with high DPI and high polling rate mice (which most of us most likely have.) It really doesn't. It works GREAT for business crap, with crappy mice with less than 100 Hz polling rate.  I have my two PCs connected via 1 Gb ethernet cables and if I enable the "high dpi" setting on my mouse, synergy just freezes. I've contacted them, I've tried synergy 2 (which is awful BTW) there was never any solution reached.  Yes, I disabled clipboard sharing and every other thing they told me to do in a very long e-mail chain. They eventually just said "sorry." Now, I have to clarify something. Synergy SEEMS to work fine after you install it... for a day or two. Then the stuttering bullcrap will start, then the freezing bullcrap will start. So unless you want to reinstall every few days, it's essentially unusable.

Not to mention the most important thing.....

There is an open source version of Synergy called "Barrier" and it's freaking free. I find it works... slightly... better than synergy itself, although it still has issues with high polling rate mice.

Here's a link to the installer packages for windows/mac/linux.

https://github.com/debauchee/barrier/wiki

Mind you, I actually PAID for synergy (and they gave me a free copy of synergy 2 to try), and I still use barrier.

Being sponsored on LTT doesn't really mean much.

There have been several instances where it has "come out" (sounds like it's a secret but it isn't really) that LTT often takes sponsors that they have not used or heard of before, and they have had to pull a few sponsors because of public backlash.

Remember, the sponsor spots are ads. They are not recommendations from a pleased user.

Linus and the gang are getting paid to say good things about these products in order to try and make their audience buy them. It's not good deeds they are ding, trying to inform their viewers. It's a business move to make money.

And yes, Synergy is crap. There have been plenty of complaint threads regarding them. Are they still a sponsor?

I used synergy before it was big and advertised and it was free, then after I saw it all over tech youtube channels it turned into this paid money grabber

The thing is, advertising is expensive and the cost increases dramatically the more you do it (more youtubers = more expensive to advertise), so as annoying or disheartening as it is, it's not really surprising.. They have to make money if they want to continue advertising their products and keep them in the market.

They're not in this thread, so either they stopped sponsoring them (or LMG stopped giving them sponsor spots) or the thread hasn't been updated

yup but going from free and working really well to being paid and working not as good as it used to is shitty.

That can be because of many reasons; they lowered their standards, they don't have enough staff to "oil the machine" if you will, they didn't expand their servers at all/to a sufficient amount, etc..

It's really unfortunate when something you really like turns to shit when a lot of people start to use it..

@CPotter is actually very good at holding sponsored accountable when it's brought to their attention. I've tagged him a couple of times when I've seen people complain and he was all over it. So just make sure the right person sees your complaint. They kicked Synergy to the curb when they pulled that Synergy 2 crap.

There's a couple of threads, but this is one of the main ones that got LMG involved.

Not trying to reignite anything, just saying when you bring sponsor shenanigans to their attention, they do listen.

Synergy 1.8 is a great albeit somewhat buggy and non user friendly app.
Synergy 2 is a fucking dumpster fire.
I was mad at not being able to use the old synergy after paying for the new one (at a much discounted rate).

The new one sucks ass, and is literally missing features of the old one.

If you want to try the old one that they dont sell anymore, there's literally a keygen script for it in C++, and you can paste it in a c++ browser app and run it there. If you've paid for 2, I'd feel no shame in bootlegging a version you can't even buy anymore.
It's way better and it's the one I use.

I could apply for a job and go meet the CEO if you wanted. It's only about 8 or 9 miles from home... Never even knew they had an office here until a couple of days ago when I saw the below advertised on FB. ?

Looks like they are in the old Canada Life building, which is in a nice little place... Pub & park around the corner, steam trains behind them, and a medieval castle 5 minutes walk away. :)

Can you send me a DM @corrado33?

As many will know, we've been working with Synergy off an on for about two years now. Late last year/early this year we took a break because of the complaints we were receiving about the performance of Synergy 2, plus their customer support.

Synergy ~1 operates pretty much exactly as @Syntaxvgm puts it, so after chatting with the Symless CEO, we decided we would be willing to work with Synergy as a sponsor, but ONLY if we were to promote the original Synergy, and NOT Synergy 2. We were assured that their support would improve, and as far I've known up until reading this, it has been solid since that last conversation.

We just canceled all future sponsorships with Synergy, you won't see them on any of our channels moving forward.

If you have had ANY issues, please message me directly.

oh wow you can buy synergy 1 now?

Last I checked you couldn't even get 1 in any way. Least they can admit 2 was a failure.

So you've cancelled all future sponsorships with them after they reverted to synergy 1? Is this because of continued issue complaints/support complaints, or unrelated?

For those wondering about the "Synergy 2" crap.

Basically it was this.

Synergy 1 was OK in terms of setup. It allowed you to change settings, assign hotkeys, assign "dead" corners, turn features on and off and everything, even lock the mouse to a single screen.

Synergy 2 got rid of all that crap and was like "just run these programs on each computer and everything will be setup automatically." That's... great for a non tech user, for for someone who bought synergy for any of those OTHER features (like locking the mouse to 1 screen), synergy 2 was awful. And Synergy 2's GUI was atrocious.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. We really appreciate the time you have taken to share your experience with Synergy 2 Beta. We decided to take this version back to beta and make Synergy 1 the recommended stable version.

With the recent organizational changes, we realized that we needed a fresh start. Synergy 2.0 Beta does not have the potential we thought it would have, so it will be replaced by a new design. We're pleased to announce that an early alpha for the next major version of Synergy will be available late 2019. All Synergy 2 license holders, early access customers, and lifetime access members (pre-Nov 2017) will have free access to the next version. We'll be maintaining Synergy 1 until the next version is ready for public release in two to three years time.

The next major version of Synergy is currently in development and aims to address the issues mentioned in this thread by greatly improving stability, adding significant configurability, and by having a total UX/UI redesign (we're actually using a completely different technology stack). Rest assured, this new version will look and feel nothing like Synergy 2 Beta, and it'll have all the best bits from Synergy 1. We have learned a lot of very important lessons from Synergy 2 Beta, and this will help us to not repeat the mistakes in the next version.

Thanks to all those who stuck with us so far, we really appreciate the support.

For the record, the synergy support was great when I e-mailed them, we just could never come to a solution unfortunately. And honestly I really do WANT it to work. Synergy seems to be the best network mouse sharing program, it's just that I don't feel like having to switch out my gaming mouse for a crappy one in order to get it to work. I really am rooting for you guys, because I do want to use your program in the future, it's just that right now, I can't. I really do hope you get the bugs worked out in the next version because I will gladly pay money if it works.

A song "Go on take the money and run" comes to mind. . .

†

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

Cry havoc and let slip the Togs of war.  (Signature V3)
