Trying to overclock 6800k

I currently have a gtx 1080 and an i7 6800k with a 1440p 144hz monitor, I recently bought the rtx 2080 ti zotac amp (managed to snag it at MSRP while it was available to pre order on amazon before stock arrived for a couple hours).

 

I was wondering if my current cpu the i7 6800k will bottleneck the rtx 2080 ti and if I upgrade to one of the other cpus if I'll see more than a 10 frame difference in games while streaming. If not I think I'll just wait a couple more generations.

 

Thoughts?

 

UPDATE:

 

It won't let me overclock my cpu past 3.8ghz on one core, apparently it only overclocks when using the bus and not the multiplier, I tried from 1.2 volts to 1.35 volts and everytime both hwmonitor and cpu z say it's running at 3.6 on 5 cores a 3.8 on one core, even though I set my multiplier to 39 on all cores and I also tried 40 on all cores. I have a Asus rampage v edition 10 mobo.... and a h115i corsair liquid cooler.... this shouldn't happen.

mesh architecture used by Skylake-X isn't nearly as good for games as ring architecture on Coffee Lake, I'd rather have Ryzen than that.

from the parts you have have picked, I bet you will get 9900X regardless of any performance & cost considerations

If it's less than a 10 to 15 frame difference then I'll wait a couple more generations.

Just simply bumping your 6800k up to it's max oc should do the job well, so I would just keep your setup for a couple more generations.

Compared to what he has you are describing the definition of side grade. Especially if he uses the great hardware x.264 encoder.

gonna have to say the 9900k is the only option with a 144hz monitor, every cpu can bottleneck the 2080 ti in certain situations according to multiple reviews, but it's a small bottleneck on the 8700k/9900k.

 

If you mean the 9980XE, it won't game as well as the 9900k, so it depends on what you value more, pure gaming or multitasking.

A 9900XE will NOT be good for gaming or streaming, nor will it be a good investment for anything but extreme workloads. I see no reason to upgrade your 6800K really. Just OC it, you should have no problem getting to 4.5GHz, or at least close.

The 6800k is still very competent for gaming, especially with an overclock. Also intel needs to fix the issues that the 9900k has due to temps while the larger size of the 6800k makes it much easier to cool comparatively.

6800k is just a 6 core 12 thread CPU, with lower clocks and hence performance than 8700k. I don't see why 2700x isnt an upgrade to a streamer.

Because the hardware encoder is fine? Also hes running at 4.4 so his single thread is likely higher than Ryzen. And why invest in another platform when used 8 cores go for around a new Ryzen? Less money and you can sell the 6800k. This is all amusing he can push quality high enough through his platform that the difference in cpu power even matters if he doesn't use the hardware encoder.

NVENC is not the solution to everything. For example, it does poorly in compression, so a higher bitrate than x264 is required to keep the video quality. Not so good if the internet is a bit slow.

 

I didn't mention upgrading to bigger core count X99 CPUs because OP didn't list any one of them. I suppose he's not taking used stuff into account, or used in the region is rare, whatever. 5960x and 6900k can be rare depending on where you live.

It's been shown that the RTX cards NVENC encoding is a huge upgrade from Maxwell and Pascal quality wise. There are just too many things OP hasn't told us. If hes just doing base level twitch streaming then he doesn't have the quality options that the CPU upgrade will even make a difference.

I have a Asus rampage v edition 10 mobo.... and a h115i corsair liquid cooler.... this shouldn't happen.

I know that's an 8700K, but it's all Asus products. Look for the settings he talks about and change those. See if that helps. Before doing so though, do an F5 (restore optimized defaults)

Update (Thought I'd share for anyone else with an intel i7 6000 series cpu): They have released BIOS updates that fix this now for most boards, and with the new windows update you can't even uninstall that specific update to get it to work anymore.
