Thrift store special, the 15$ PC.

UncleMax

So as was walking around the thrift store last weekend I spotted this gem in the corner and had to take it home if for nothing else than the super dated case with purple and green plastic inside, lol.

So what did I get,for 15$

Asis DSBF-DE

Duel Xeon X5050 with what looks like

passive copper heat sinks

4gb DDR2

thermaltake armor case

lots of fans

X1650 Pro 512 graphics card

2x WD 80Gb Hdd

So what’s the plan? Raid my junk pile and see what I can do with it for little to no money of course.

I would also reccomend this. Turns out you cant power a computer on thin air.

Are you sure about that?

Assuming the motherboard has gigabit LAN, you should be able to make a decent Plex media server out of it with a bunch of HDDs... But the power usage won't be too friendly...

You could spend $50 on a pair of x5365 processors, probably 4x the performance but 150w TDP per cpu :))

x5460 is around 20$ and has 120w TDP...

Trasht he hardware and use that thermaltake armor for a new build. Very ugly in a beautiful way I forgot about that case. Big window, no paint on interior. Light that fucker up blue!

Armor+ was better though
image.png.3e98dbe7f9b647b8686a4de10815e6ab.png

Had a neighbor that built a 1090T build in this thing, so fucking ugly and so fucking badass. It had a toolbox on top! He had the thing lit up with more red lights than an airport runway. Was jealous in a weird way even though I passed up both this aesthetic and the 1090t at the time.

Know what it was like to clean the dust filter on each of the 10 or 11 bay blanks in front? If it's anything like my CM storm trooper, probably terrible. What are those steel things that swing open in the front for? They're armor, stfu don't what it does. Badass case. The side panel had 3 screws, and if you removed two of them, you pushed the middle one down and it was a latch! That right, the screw was a latch! Did it make sense? Of course not, but it didn't have to when it had fucking armor on it. This case would win in a fight against your sorry case.

It had a removable motherboard tray. No, it' \s not case labs, it's the thermaltake armor and you didn't even need to use the case!

There's also a shitty mid tower version of this.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

You forgot to mention the case weighs a ton. No joke the empty case weighs 36 pounds.

As far as the intervals go they will get scraped or redonated when I’m done but for now I have a extra 650W psu and a gtx 750 ti that I’m throwing in there, I’ll do some benchmarks and see how bad it really is. I’m guessing pretty bad  lol

I would upgrade the cpu's to the x5365's and drop in 8 sticks of 4gb ram for 32gb which is cheap being ddr2. Toss in a SSD for OS and maybe one for storage if you want... or drop in 3-4 4tb drives and raid them up. Now you have a decent server for whatever you can think of.

So what’s the plan?

With a budget of $150, first buy a brand new mobo on eBay for $20.00. Then buy a fully capable used CPU on eBay for another $20.00. Then buy a brand new Intel stock cooler for $8.00 on eBay. Then buy 1 USED stick of 8GB DDR4-2133 RAM for $30.00. Then buy a brand new 320-500 GB HDD for $12.00-$15.00 on eBay. Then buy a brand new 80+ 450-600W PSU ANYWHERE when you see one on sale for $20.00. Slap on a USED GTX 750 2GB for $40.00 and you can play ANY game in 1080p on low to ultra settings(depending on the game of course) at a minimum of 30 fps and you'd be surprised just how much higher fps you can get, even in newer titles.

After you've built this fully capable 1080p PC, sell everything else you got from the $15.00 thrift store purchase for a random amount of money to make up for some of the $150 + $15.00 that you spent for this PC and call it a day.

Hey, it could happen. When you put your mind to it. And if you don't want to keep this PC, just sell it for $300.00 on eBay. QUICK profit.

P.S. Windows 10 is FREE online. Totally legit too. Just gotta look at a watermark at the bottom right of the screen everyday.

Original poster I think you meant to say gem. Am I right? Just point it out for you so you can correct your post.  Now as for finding that pc for $15 no way you find deals like that where I live.  Fingers crossed that in the future though.

Well I had an cooler master gx650 80 bronze sitting around in a box and when I went to use it I realised I needed an extra 4 pin for this mother board. Luckily I keep everything so with a little snip, solder, and some heat shrink I lost one pci-e 4+2 and gained my extra 4 pin.

the next big issue was cooling so I got creative with some extra fans some zip ties.

The HDD is a 320gb unit out of an old laptop, it’s slow but works for now.

i also dropped 10$ and got 16gb of ddr2 FB-Dimm to utilize the quad channel ram on  this board.D2AEB0E4-4717-457D-B17D-24317BF16DF1.thumb.jpeg.5301839354d39a9b6f5aec8023147639.jpeg

So 25$ in, (if don’t count what I already had) and it posted. Time to load up windows.

Wish there was interesting stuff like that in my local thrift stores. All they ever have are old clothes, crap toys, and crappy obsolete consumer electronics. I think the best thing I've found at one of the local thrift stores was a glass desk for $25. Still using it today though it's very wobbly and I want to get a new one soon, preferably a stained or painted (very dark) wood desk.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

So here’s my take on this set up,going in and disabling one of the x5050’s made this system almost unusable on windows 7 even doing the most basic task (web browsing, excel, word).

Enabling both x5050’s made it livable for most things I even got fortnite to load and play at 15-20 fps at 90-100 cpu usage.

So what’s next, well I scored a 20$ set of E5450,s and a 15$ Kingston SSD so I guess that brings the total up to 60$ spent on this thing lol

Also the case was looking a bit tired so I stripped it down for a fresh coat of paint.

Still working on cleaning up the case but heres a few benchmarks showing the differance between the x5050 and e5450, not to shabby for 20$ lol
