YouTube ditching "Source Quality" download after this october.

So, some of you may know that YouTube allow you to download all of your videos at the source format via Google Takeout (at https://takeout.google.com/). Well, that won't happen anymore. After this october, only videos that uploaded within 6 mouth before the day you request the archive will be serve at source format. Anything older than that will be compressed using H.264 and AAC. Google claims that this will be a "high quality" version. So, it might be a good idea to request your archive now because YouTube really sucks at maintain good video quality, and you should keep your original encoding if possible. Also, you might wanna prepare a fast internet connection because you only have 7 days to download your archive after you request one, and if you request a new one after october, then all of your videos will be compressed.

I am actually surprised, why it took them this long?, I know a LOT of people who upload 50 gig 5 minute videos because they dont bother editing/compressing.

My friend uploaded a 100 GB of 5 minutes 360 degree video because he didn't know how to compress it properly. Like WTF.

We might start seeing people backing up old videos like Linus does rather than just redownloading them

Irish in Vancouver, what's new?

I'd look for options because of time to upload the damn thing. I'm on 100/10 line and upload would take forever even at max speed. How can people even be this uneducated but using computers and "creating" content. I too once was testing things, but when raw output video was 50GB for 3 minutes, you kinda compute it's not suppose to be that way when you get full movies at 1080p with really nice quality at 1.5GB. It's literally just connecting dots in life and some seem to fail even at that. Or just plain don't give a F.

youtube's transitioning to h265 or VP9 for playback I think o_o those hold up better in terms of compression with the same bitrate budget

The compression is still quite noticable. They just need to increase bitrate in general for every res.
