Who is the 9900K for?

With the coming launch I have to ask, who exactly is the 9900K for?

price with basic cooler, higher end board for easier overclocking, still at least near $700 for the set up

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/s9BDMZ
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/s9BDMZ/by_merchant/

Ryzen Value option with like 80% of the performance, should still be doing 4.1-.2 ghz on that board

So who exactly is going to be buying the 9900K? Especially over the 8700K if you really want an intel CPU? Maybe it'll be really good at premiere due to quick sync?

I'm pretty sure they didn't release an 8700K successor just to try and clear stock, doubt I'd ever recommend the 8 core/8 thread CPU they're releasing.

I think it's just lazy competition, they know they're Intel so they can sell a processor with a value increase that checks all the same boxes as the 'lesser' brand.

People like my brother lol. Back in 2015 he bought a 980 ti HOF and an i7 4790k, which was the best shit for gaming back then. He paired it with a 1600x900 60hz monitor he got for free from our hs. I always told him that it wasn't a good value proposition, but he said and I quote: "I don't care if it makes sense. I don't care if I could get better price/performance. I just want the best." - My older brother circa 2015

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

It's for people who want the fastest gaming processor and/or the fastest non HEDT processor and will never miss the few hundred dollar.  Honestly if you are doing a high-end build, $350 can get lost in the shuffle.  You can spend that in fittings on a nice custom loop.

Unless that extra 5-10% headroom really matters, an 8700K would get you a better GPU up to the 1080ti vs only getting a GTX 1070ti/1080 with the 9900K

9900k is for a new gamer who originally wants to buy a 9700k but find out it does not support hyper thread / SMT. and he must have very high end GPU and monitor first

What if you didn't have to chose 9900k/1080 or 8700k/1080ti and could afford a 9900k/1080ti (or god forbid a 2080ti) without it ever affecting your life?

Believe it or not there are enthusiasts who see this as a cheap hobby.  Plenty of car guys burn the cost of a full blown 9900k/2080ti rig on one track day.

Not all enthusiast/hobbyist are limited by budget to the same extent...and the 9900k is an enthusiast's chip.

Exactly my thought as well.  Spending $5-6k a year on pc builds a year is the cheapest hobby I've had in a long time.  It was costing me $40-50k a year for car racing on top of the $65k car sticker price and $50k of modifications.  That was starting to get crazy and I'm finding this hobby much more enjoyable all around.

So for me, building a new 9900k + 2080Ti system to replace my 2700x + 1080 Ti SLI is an upgrade and something I look forward to doing.

hyperthreading/SMT is meaningless for what you're asking.

If you mean do games support or use more than 6 threads well, Then the answer is not really in most cases.

Ass creed unity scaled all the way to a 16 core 1950X, but the intel lower core count CPUs were still ahead

because most of the work rendering a game is on Core 0 and Core 1

it make much sense if the just release a limited edition for this purpose instead of following apple and nvidia path.

Besides, that's certainly not the majority of people.

And the 9900k is not meant for the majority of people just like most people aren't driving around a Rolls Royce or taking trips in a private plane.  The silicon is not high yield so Intel is charging a premium over something that is more easy to produce like a lower clock, 8-core 2700x without an iGPU.

Also, dumping $5k into the stock market would be a trivial, so no.

I suppose a proper title is what average consumer or enthusiast would buy a 9900K?

The average consumer 1000% should not buy the 9900k.  It would be a complete and total waste on them.  The average gamer or value oriented enthusiast, should probably not buy it either.  The people that can afford it and want the best are who should buy it.

Don't forget you have them people aswell who may have not upgraded say since the 4790k and don't upgrade yearly but say every 3 to 5 years so when they do upgrade they buy the best irrespective if they need it or not. Personally IMHO if you have an 8700k you have no need to upgrade to this and if you did need more cores or threads all I would say to them is this. Why didn't you go x299 or even threadripper at the tine of you choosing the 8700k ??? Cause let's face it there was no guarantee that last year when the 8700k was launched that intel would bring an 8 core 16 thread cpu to the mainstream line up. Cause the 8700k did amazing in gaming, performed very well in creation and productivity.
