why NOT to buy gpu used for mining?

iLostMyXbox21

Its almost like no one here has bought a new GPU that was toast from the word go.

Its a risk even to buy a new GPU lol

Its a risk to buy a used mining GPU

Its your money, gamble all you want.  I am on the fence personally as my wife would be pissed if I bought a used miner and it didn't work, because I don't want to deal with my wife being pissed I would buy a new GPU instead - risk vs reward isn't worth it in this case for me lol

We all have our reasons, and clearly some are jaded from buying a bad mining card here.  I see the same exact hate for Manufacturers who send people duds too.

Sorry but uh, that's wrong.

Mining is actually safer for a card than gaming. Why? The constant load doesn't induce temperature fluctuations in the card, therefore the solder joints are less stressed over time from potential contractions and expansions, and therefore are less likely to break. Also, what a miner should be doing is trying to keep the card as cool as possible, allowing for longer lifespan overall, higher clocks, and faster mining speed. In addition to that, they'll try to undervolt the GPU as much as physically possible, further helping to increase the lifespan of the card.

Overall, mining cards tend to live longer than cards used for gaming because of the care miners put into the cards.

Yes but his question wasn't comparing it to buying a card gamed on. It was simply asking if mining on it will affect the life of a card, which it does

when mining a gpu gets put at 100% load and 100% fan speed.
as long as they are mining they run very hot.
gpu fans aren't built to spin at 100% for long.
so the lifetime of the gpu will be significantly reduced.
i have seen cards used for mining die within 2 weeks after purchase.

most miner run fans at 100% and under volt the cards so they don't really get very hot and you can get used mining cards cheaper than cards used to game so its not a bad option.

Offcourse they are a considerable option but every card i have ever gotten that has been used for mining has died within a month or 2, could just be my luck though

Current build: Ryzen 7 1700x, asus prime x370-pro, 16gb gskill trident z rgb, asus rog strix gtx 1070 ti, corsair rm650x, nzxt s340 elite, samsung 840 pro 256gb, 1.5tb hdd.

yea its not a huge sample size and you could have got them from guys that don't know how to under volt or set the fan speed.

Every card I’ve got from mining is still running. As are the over 200 cards that are still running. Like most stuff, it’s user error. Along with production quality.

I rather buy new so i know how its been taken care of,And know i have a warranty time frame in case its doa or dies fast.Used would have to be half off to me and i have to know the person so they don't grab the money and run when it won't work.

My Leadtek GTX 1080 was an ex-mining card, I know because I went to the seller's apartment where I saw it plugged to a mining rig. It was well ventilated, perhaps a tad dusty but in good condition. I didn't hesitate to buy it because it was relatively cheap, and more importantly, the seller gave me a receipt for the card which was bought only six month back and had 18 months of warranty left then. It's doing a peachy job on my 4K TV.....but, I guess it's down to luck of the draw.

Thermal hysteresis has always been the enemy of longevity in electronics, this is why I tend to "over cool" my stuff, not because running at 75 degrees is bad, but because an average min-max during work cycles of 25 degrees is better than 35 degrees...

i always see people say “don’t get if it was used for mining” or “ask if it was mined with” but why? does it like, make the car weaker or something?

If you are looking to buy from somewhere, try to find a person reselling thier rig, trying to get out of the business, for lower prices. Also here is where I buy all my rig stuff from:

theres nothing wrong with mined cards if they took proper care of it, a lot of miners don't have a clue what they're doing though if its caked in dust don't buy it.
