Quick summary:

HDMI: version 1.4 can do 4K 30 fps (3820 x 2160), HDMI 2.0 or higher 4K 60fps.

DVI: basically the same as HDMI, single lick can only do max 1920x1200. Dual-link can do much more. DVI doens't do audio (most of the time)

VGA: analog signal, not perfect pixel image, try not to use.

Unless it's some lower version of HDMI, the HDMI is always superior because it allows higher resolutions and refresh rates than the other two. I'm using 1080 144Hz gaming monitor and I had a lot of problems with DVI because it has to be Dual Link and those are really bulky cables with usually very short lenghts. HDMI only goes up to 60Hz because some idiot used low HDMI version on the screen itself.

 

If there is DisplayPort, always go with it. It has higher specs in general even on older screens.
