Would it be dumb to pre-order a 2080?

I've completed my new PC build minus the graphics card. Originally I was going to go with the 1080ti strix edition but decided to wait another month for the new 2080. I understand pre-ordering is generally a bad idea because there aren't any solid reviews out on the performance of the 2080. But, I don't want to be in the situation where I don't have a 2080 because of Stock problems. I haven't paid attention to many of the past GPU launches so would the stock be something I should worry about? 

 

Before you say 2080 isn't worth the money, I only want it because I am a heavy Battlefield player and I love the best of the best graphics so if the new 2080 seriously has better-looking graphics for the new Battlefield game, then I think it's worth the money.

If you dont NEED your new GPU right this second it may be worth it to wait for the first Reviews to trickle in. You can still buy a 1080Ti or a 2080 after launch possibly at a reduced price (in the 1080ti's case) and you KNOW what you will get / can expect.

It's fair to say that the 2080 and 2080ti will be able to reach higher framerates at higher graphical settings than ever before. If this wasn't the case, Nvidia would be shooting themselves in the foot. However, I can't recommend that you pre-order the new GPUs until we get reviews, and proper benchmarks. I don't think that there will be an issue with stock like there was earlier this year and in late 2017, because the whole crypto mining thing has blown over, and is out of the news.

So...yes, if you don't pre-order the 2080, they may sell out. They're touting some pretty serious numbers, and though mining dropped off, it could be that they heard the news of new cards and are waiting. These also could get snapped up by a lot of different industries, like videographers or CG rendering folks. I anticipate they will sell out before the end of the year.

 

That said, for the price they're at, I'd do a 1080ti. The Strix is awesome. Unless you want to play at 4k at 144Hz, a 1080ti will rock. Also, you don't want to be first with the RTX cards. They might be poop, there's no benchmark, power draw, or heat numbers out there yet. They might also have quality issues out of the gate, this happens sometimes with a new tech launch (RTX and how they approached these cards is new tech in a lot of ways).

I wouldn't say if it's dumb if the 2080 costs around the same as new 1080ti from where you are.

If you have the money and don't mind the thought of having possibly "wasted" $300 then put in that pre-order.  Worst happens -- you get it and aren't satisfied and you return it.  Or possibly sell it for a profit if there is no supply for those that didn't pre-order.  Or you get one and the reviews trash the card and you can't return it so you sell it cheaper than what you paid so you can go buy a 1080 ti.

People who thinks its dumb simply cant afford it so they bash the idea of preordering. Why is it dumb is you are able to return it if it doesn't live up to the hype? Just preorder it and secure your card and if it blows the 1080ti out of the water then you will be happy you got it

if budget isn't really an issue, it's not dumb, but if that's the case you should be looking at the 2080 ti. If budget is an issue, the reward:risk is terrible.

I wouldn't pre-order unless you can get a return without caveats like restocking.

Personally, I have only pre-ordered a handful of things in my lifetime...and I got burned on a few of them.

 

Pre-ordering a GPU, or any computer hardware for that matter, seems pointless.

Sure, you won't be the first...1000 people, to have it on Day 0, but everyone will have their hands on it a month later.

Plus, I won't be a guinea pig for brand-new hardware -- when potential factory flaws/defects are still out there.

• EVGA and the temperature / thermal pad issue on the GTX 1000 series GPUs comes to mind -- that said, EVGA did a good job remedying the problem.
• Oh yeah, the fan control issue on the GTX 1080 Founder's Edition during 2016.

I can afford a card Mandingo if I want one, I'd just not waste my money on something that is marginally better then what is out already after seeing actual tests, and it gets 'teething' issues out of the way as well, as others have mentioned (like drivers too, I had major issues with drivers with my 9xx cards for the longest time, even Nvidia admitted it was the drivers.). Also half the crap out that hints at actual tests before its actually out are fake anyways.

This goes for ANYTHING I buy, I'm not a guinea pig for these companies, I want something that works, they have to EARN my money...
