Waiting to Upgrade Your Graphics Card Was (Probably) a Waste

https://hothardware.com/news/pny-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-specs-leak-confirms-beefy-4352-cuda-cores

If this pricing leak is true, with the 2080ti sitting at $1000 and the 2080 reaching around $700, I don't imagine pricing in the current graphics card market is going to get any lower.

Since nvidia ended up with an excess of graphics cards because of the mining crisis, I'd imagine they would want to make as much money off of those cards as possible, and since the base 2080 is ~$200 more than the 1080 and the 2080ti is ~$300 more than the 1080ti, I don't see why current prices would lower at all.

They would do one of two things, release new cards at the same msrp and shift the past gen cards' prices down or just change the msrp and shift the new cards' prices up leaving the past gen untouched, and it appears that they've chosen to do the latter.

Seems like anyone who was waiting for the new line of graphics cards to get a more powerful card for the same price is out of luck.

It's never a waste. Who in their right mind would want to invest in two year old tech when the new cards are right around the corner?
Even if it's ridiculously expensive, even the GTX2060 should still be a major step up.

And if we wait a little longer, AMD will release their new GPUs, forcing Nvidia to lower their prices too, as usual.

Price and return. If it's less than half the price, for more than half the performance, over enough of a time it's still worth it. I currently only really play Rocket League. So for me, anything above or at a 1050ti is worth it for me, providing the price is ok (and also less power consumption = smaller footprint for me too).

It's just that I've seen people waiting for the past year for this upgrade and it's finally coming and surprise surprise it costs a lot more money. I'd rather have just gotten the best card available to me a year ago than waited all this time to find out that I need to spend a lot more money for that increased performance. I mean it may be 2 year old tech but it's good tech. My friend has a 1070 that lets him run all his games at high 1080p 144fps and I have a 1080 that lets me run med-high 4k 60fps. I can't imagine how I would feel if I had just held onto my 750ti for the past year and found out the new pricing was going to be proportionally more expensive anyways.

Not everyone that's been waiting all this time can just go "oh well I guess I'll just have to drop and extra $200-$300 on this card since it's newer after all"

Well yeah this whole post is theoretical. Everything I'm saying is under the theory that this price leak is real. But what I'm saying is why would older cards lower in price if the new cards cost way more anyways. If I'm selling you the 2080 for $700 than the $500 1080 is already marginally less expensive than that. And if I overstocked my 1080's because of the mining crisis, then I'm going to want all the money that I can get.

Well sure you could take one of if not the worst optimized game on the market that cards have been struggling to run for years, but in general he runs his games 120-144fps just fine at high settings

you do have a point there, i'm also afraid Nvidia might pull crap like this because there's no competition, really hoping everything is priced reasonably

I'm hoping that it's not ridiculous but in all honesty when you have a whole lineup of enthusiasts who've been eagerly awaiting this release and you know you're the only one who can offer this level of performance, you can do whatever you want with pricing can't you?

It's like you said, they just don't have competition forcing them to have competitive pricing.

The 1080 was $549 on release, and $699 if you bought the Founder's Edition, so $699 for the 2080 isn't so outrageous considering a new architecture and ray tracing. Also, you have to consider that it's using a new memory standard and that RAM is still very expensive. So, I'd say that the price point is still competitive. If you can't afford it, wait for the 1080/1080 ti sales to go and have at it.

But again, considering that nvidia overstocked those cards, why would there even be a 1080/1080ti sale when the cards are already $200-$300 cheaper than their respective 20xx counterparts (assuming this leak is correct) with no serious competition?

And that's exactly my point, people that have waited for the past year have just wasted their time since the new cards are so much more expensive that they'll likely end up with a 10xx card anyways unless they can shell out that extra few hundred dollars.

With respect to the idea that Nvidia overstocked their high end gaming SKUs. I don't see this as a question of why would they be bought. I see it as why should you buy it. Yes they have Tenser Cores (Might've mispelled that) and Ray Tracing. But let's also look at another fact, from many of the leaks, if you believe them, the 2080Ti is actually base clocked lower than the 2080 will be, this is all leak based speculation.

Yes, well, back in the height of the mining crisis people WERE paying over 1000 bucks for the XX80ti.  So why wouldn't nVidia think they CAN sell there new XX80ti for the same price??

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

Since the prices will not be lower, I think I'll just go ahead and get a 1070 TI.
