Australia Proposes Laws to let police access encrypted phones

Source 1: overlord360 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/959973-australian-government-proposing-laws-to-enable-the-police-to-gain-access-to-encrypted-mobile-phones/

Source 2: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-14/tech-surveillance-laws-less-of-a-back-door-and-more-a-side-gate/10114534

  • Australia is considering updating its laws to help the nation's police and spy agencies monitor and prevent criminal activity through phones and the internet.

    • "In the last 12 months, 200 cases have arisen where our investigations for serious crimes have been impacted by our inability to access that data under the existing legislation," - Cyber Security Minister Angus Taylor.

  • The government insists companies will not be asked to break encryption systems where they don't hold the "golden key".

    • For example, Apple won't be forced to create a backdoor for iMessage, where the encryption key is different for every user.

    • Apple does hold a single encryption key for its iCloud services — something the Government could request access to.

  • Another example:

    • if you use an app to send a message to your friend, it's encrypted as it travels between the two phones or devices.

    • When it arrives, it's decrypted for your friend to read.

    • if law enforcement agencies have a valid search warrant to monitor your phone, they could read the decrypted message at the same time as your friend does.

      • And they could take copies of what they see, search the device for content, and even delete items such as messages or photos if necessary.

  • There are three different levels of requests that the government can make to companies and individuals:

    • The first stage is voluntary: a "give us a hand"-type appeal.

    • The second stage is a compulsory request, where a company has to help out or face a fine of up to $10 million.

      • Individuals would face a $50,000 fine.

    • The third stage is demands that companies and individuals work to build their own systems to help monitor activity.

      • ie, if they don't know how or can't comply with the request, they have to work to meet the request.

Thunderfoot takes Issue with TechQuickie

Source 2: https://youtu.be/VHjmlQdzpW4

1. The entire FAP on molecular scanning was to show people "here's this thing. It sounds cool and it might work" - we never said "go buy this" or that the product would probably do what it said. Video was intended to show a concept that might be more commonplace in the future

2. We specifically called out that this kind of near-IR scanning is NOT super-accurate, is not MEANT to replace professional scientific equipment, and that you should take the results with a grain of salt.

3. We mentioned the company's claims - and said "claims." We did not say "this is guaranteed to work like they say it does." Is it really that far-fetched we could see a better version of this in the future that could give a ballpark idea of what's in something?

4. Some of his claims even seem a little funny, like drug identification. To me it's common sense that if you just pointed the thing at a sealed pill it would just reflect what's in the coating (such as sugar, which is what he got in his video) - why not split it open and actually scan what's inside? It might still suck, but why would you expect it to be able to see inside of a pill so easily without cutting it open? We never said in the video it could do that. We say near-IR can penetrate farther into objects than radio or far-IR, but not that it goes right to the core of it to give you a super-accurate readout of the composition - if the thing doesn't work as advertised, then fine, but I don't get the criticism of having to scan the inside of something. To me it seems like common sense.

5. He criticizes a Bloomberg video on it because they scanned a piece of Kraft cheese and it didn't line up with the nutrition label - but in reality, the results were actually quite close

6. He criticizes the Scio as being crude and low-res - but AGAIN, this fits in with what we say about how this isn't professional equipment and you should take it with a grain of salt...but of course he doesn't give us credit for saying that.

And of course, the obvious - no one from either of these companies has ever had any contact with us. I merely thought it would be an interesting video idea. If the conspiracy people want to believe otherwise, we can't exactly change their minds but why would we accept money from them for a video that didn't even get that many eyeballs on it? Scio was simply the most prevalent example of the technology at the time of writing and it seemed like a good idea to talk about what they were up to to make things relatable.

Teen Hacks Apple for a year

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/961247-a-teen-from-australia-was-able-to-remotely-access-confidential-information-data-on-apples-servers-for-over-a-year/

Source 2: https://www.notebookcheck.net/An-Australian-teenager-hacked-into-Apple-s-secure-network-and-stole-90-GB-of-data.323434.0.html

  • A Melbourne, Australia based teenager was able to remotely hack and access some of Apple's secure servers for over a year, downloading over 90 GB of secure files and customer information.

  • The teen, who must remain anonymous for legal reasons, was able to

    • access Apple’s servers via various methods that hid his identity.

    • access authorized keys that allowed him to log in.

    • remotely access the servers and download over 90 GB of secure files, some of which contained customer account information.

  • The teen went undetected until Apple finally noticed an intrusion and blocked his IP address.

    • Apple then contacted the FBI, who turned the case over to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

    • The AFP issued a search warrant for the teen’s home and seized two Apple laptops, as well as the teen’s phone and hard drive.

    • At least one of the computers contained a folder labelled “hacky hack hack” that was loaded with hacking software and instructions.

  • The teen claims to have hacked the company because he has always "dreamed of" working there.

Gigafactory Worker Allegedly Trafficking 'Significant Quantities' of Cartel Drugs

Source 1: AluminiumTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/961380-tesla-motors-allegedly-covered-up-substantial-narco-trafficking-by-employees-in-nevada-gigafactory-and-spied-on-employees/

Source 2: https://jalopnik.com/several-tesla-gigafactory-workers-allegedly-trafficking-1828393920

  • A former Tesla employee has filed a formal whistleblower complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission, alleging the automaker failed to disclose to shareholders that authorities had uncovered an alleged drug trafficking effort involving an employee at its Gigafactory plant in Nevada dealing “substantial” amounts of cocaine and possibly meth.

  • DEA received an anonymous phone call from a tipster who gave detailed information about an employee at the Gigafactory who was allegedly dealing “substantial quantities” of cocaine and possibly meth on behalf of a Mexican drug cartel from Sonora Mexico.

  • From there the DEA reached out to Tesla to investigate the issue internally.

  • The Whistleblower says that the Tesla employee who was the subject of the DEA trafficking tip wasn’t “terminated upon receipt of the DEA tip or anytime during the entire time that he was employed by Tesla, to his knowledge.”

  • A Tesla spokesperson said in a statement that the Whistleblowers allegations were taken “very seriously when he brought them forward.”

    • “Some of his claims are outright false,”

    • “Others could not be corroborated, so we suggested additional investigative steps to try and validate the information he had received second-hand from a single anonymous source.”

    • “Because we wanted to be sure we got this right, we made numerous attempts to engage further with Mr. Hansen (the whistleblower) to understand more about what he was claiming and the work that he did in reaching his conclusions,”

    • “He rejected each of those attempts, and to date has refused to speak with the company further. It seems strange that Mr. Hansen would claim that he is concerned about something happening within the company, but then refuse to engage with the company to discuss the information that he believes he has.”

  • The Whistleblower also alleges that he discovered that $37 million of copper and raw materials had been stolen from Tesla’s Gigafactory between January and June. But he claims that he was “instructed not to report the thefts to outside law enforcement” and “that he was directed to cease his internal investigation into the issue,”

~0nm transistors created

Source 1: rcmaehl https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/960966-intel-falls-further-behind-as-~0nm-transistors-created/

Source 2: https://phys.org/news/2018-08-smallest-transistor-worldwide-current-atom.html?ref=rcmaehl

  • German researchers have developed a single-atom transistor, the smallest transistor in existence.

  • This quantum electronics component switches electrical current by controlled repositioning of a single atom.

    • works at room temperature

    • Solid state gel electrolyte

      • combines the advantages of a solid with the electrochemical properties of a liquid

    • consumes very little energy

      • enables switching energies smaller than those of conventional silicon technologies by a factor of 10,000

      •
  • The single-atom transistor is based on an entirely new technical approach.

    • Consists exclusively of metal, no semiconductors are used.

    • This results in extremely low electric voltages and, hence, an extremely low energy consumption.

Valve seems to be working on tools to get Windows games running on Linux

Source 1: 2FA https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/960631-valve-seems-to-be-working-on-tools-to-get-windows-games-running-on-linux/

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/08/valve-seems-to-be-working-on-tools-to-get-windows-games-running-on-linux/

  • Valve appears to be working on a set of "compatibility tools," called Steam Play, that would allow at least some Windows-based titles to run on Linux-based SteamOS systems

  • Reddit users noticed that Steam's GUI files (as captured by SteamDB's Steam Tracker) include a hidden section with unused text related to the unannounced Steam Play system.

  • According to that text, "Steam Play will automatically install compatibility tools that allow you to play games from your library that were built for other operating systems."

    • Other unused text in the that GUI file suggests Steam Play will offer official compatibility with "supported tiles" while also letting users test compatibility for "games in your library that have not been verified with a supported compatibility tool."

  • Remember that games running on SteamOS already tend to take a performance hit compared to those same games running on the same hardware under Windows.

    • Adding another "compatibility tool" to the mix could easily exacerbate those problems,

    • wider adoption of the open source Vulkan graphic standard might help cancel out such issues.

Netflix tests video promos between episodes

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2018/08/17/netflix-tests-video-promos-in-between-episodes-much-to-viewers-dislike/

Source 2:

  • Netflix  is testing video promos that play in between episodes of shows a viewer is streaming.

  • The promos are full-screen videos, personalized to the user, featuring content Netflix would have otherwise suggested elsewhere in its user interface – like on a row of recommendations, for example.

    • The promos also displace the preview information for the next episode being binged, like the title, description, and thumbnail that previously appeared on the right side of the screen.

  • The promos (ads?) are not about to be rolled out: they’re one of the hundreds of tests Netflix runs every year, many of which are focused on how to better promote Netflix’s original programming.

    • But unlike some prior tests, the promos may feature any content in Netflix’s catalog – not just its original programming.

  • the test in question does allow users to push a Continue button at any time to move forward to the next episode.

  • But while audiences may not like it, ‘features’ like this do the job of showcasing content for subscribers in order to help them discover new shows and keep them engaged.

Maybe Nvidia is  trying to replace the titan series with the 80ti series? Because they seem to be making titan series into more workstation cards with the titan v?

maybe they have no idea on where to pitch them to investors directly? o_o or they think of kickstarter and doesn't look elsewhere

(also not sure if investors would prefer a thoroughly delivered kickstarter than a minimal pitch without applied mass production...?)

They could sell their patent for millions/billions to any company who current makes real scanning equipment if they could do it in a hand held device with a cellphone for 1/10th the price

It's been 11 hours, and Youtube's still showing 360p only. You might wanna check on that, @LinusTech

For those who want to watch beyond 360p, try to watch it here on Twitch for the meantime. Max. quality is 1080p.

Everyone pulls this crap and we are just getting tired of it. Another coMpany in the last month basically  threateneD to withhold our review sample of their latest high profile product if we didn't fly to Italy for a briefing.

Ugh its not like they don't know they're doing this months in advance.  It's not like they can't brief people on what's going on.  The blatant disregard for peoples lives and families to pursue a couple of headlines of discount marketing is shameful.
