GTX 1170 for 1080p 144Hz gaming overkill?

The title says it.

spec

Amd R5 2600X

gigabyte X470 gaming 8

16Gb ram

you don't know really know the specs, not even the name, so why you speculate? for cs go 970 is enough, for witcher 3 on ultra maybe titan x would be enough

Not with an R5 2600X as that CPU will bottleneck it.

I wouldn't do high refresh rate gaming without an i7-8700 or an i5-8600.

Eh... I think it's time for an upgrade pal!

But to answer your question I would say it's feasible that you can run any game at ultra at 144hz(1080p) without dips.

I'm waiting for 1440p 240hz myself, own a x34 but I mostly play fighting games so I'll be moving back to a 3x1 1440p setup and having my x34 on top for FPS or open world games.

The GTX 1070 would even do 1080p at 144hz on many games. The Ryzen 5 2600x isn't a bottleneck.

For 144hz gaming, it is.

There are many instances where an i7-8700 will get 20+ fps over a Ryzen.

If you are going to game at high refresh rates, you really need to pair it with a proper CPU to maximize your frame output.

Here's an example review that showcases this:

EDIT: https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_ryzen_5_2600x_review,1.html

The above is a better review as it is a 2600x review, but the results are similar.

Well if it is purely for gaming then Intel is still better. Also Ryzen 2nd gen CPUs are "proper CPU"s they are just better all rounders with amazing workload performance whereas what Intel lacks in anything not specifically gaming, in frame rate it shines king. That is however dependant on if your games make use of multiple cores that Ryzen provides, such as Ashes of Singularity.

The Ryzen CPUs is a forward thinking option when games make better use of cores (Probably Cyberpunk 2077) whereas the Intel CPUs are the current FPS champs. Personally I don't just game so Ryzen works better is what I recommend to people since the 2nd generation of Ryzen came out.

I operate with a similar mindset, but your statement sounds very Bulldozery from back in the days :).

It's why I run a Ryzen 7 after all, but I am also not targeting 144fps gaming.

I am also a heavy multitasker and I like to stream + game in VR, which would bring an i7-8700 to its knees with the lack of compute.

TBH, I am looking forward to dropping Zen 3 into my X370 board, especially if rumors are true that we are getting 12 and 16 core variants in Socket AM4.

Nope but its gonna be RTX 2070 how fast is that 16gb Ram? 2400 vs 4600 is huge fps jump in games at 1080p

Here's to hoping Zen 3 will support your MOBO. This is my parts list, I literally ordered it a few hours ago: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/NewVoid/saved/bZqq4D

Seems like it's good for AAA gaming and workstation tasks such as SOLIDWORKS on my 32" 1440p 60hz gaming monitor. However I opted for Ryen 5 and just overclocking to 4.2 clocks as Ryzen 7 is severely under utilised currently for so much more money.

When is Ryzen Gen 3 primed to drop on the market and at what price? I havent been keeping up with the news haha.

Ideally you'll want to overclock an Intel CPU instead for 144hz, the i5 8600K and memory at 3200mhz would be the most suitable.

high refresh rate is strongly CPU bound in fact you can do 1080p144hz fine with good graphical adjustment and nowadays 1070 Ti already so less worrying on the GPU.

not just CPU also ram speeds DDR4 2400 vs DDR4 4000+ ram 20 fps+ difference

It's all about the VRMs since AMD did state that Socket AM4 will be supported through 2020.

It's a big reason why I didn't go with a budget board. The VRMs on my board run really cold, even when i bump my Ryzen 7 1700 to 4ghz at 1.45 volts to keep it stable.

I am willing to bet that once these chips hit, it will be "supported" but with a "you're on your own" in regards to VRMs.

That's what seems to be the case with X399 and the new 32C Threadripper.

For example, I do not expect a non X370/X470 board to support 12C and 16C AM4 CPUs, and I really only expect the high end boards to support overclocking.

Well my mobo is a b450 motherboard and reviews say it's better than most if not all X470 boards with superb overclocking and actual, legitimate, full power phases lol. (Last mobo on video)

Princess Candice said 3200mhz on your memory is what you want. Mine is 3000mhz, should I try overclocking?

I believe it since VRMs aren't chipset exclusive.

I would consider overclocking your ram, but I don't think the difference is that drastic between 3000 and 3200 on Ryzen. It has been a while since I've looked into it though.
