Someone Explain This To Me? So it’s 11:59 AM when it hits 00:00 am is it AM OR PM THEN ?

WolfLoverPro

The time flow in your title does not work. If it's 11:59 am, the next minute, it'll be 12:00 pm. When it's 11:59 pm, the next minute is 00:00 am. I mean, alternatively, use 24 hour time and not bother with am/pm.

As an American I still don’t understand why there’s 2 12 hours in a day instead of just 24.

When I need to know, I just google a chart and find a website like this:

Edit:

i deleted the link because as soon as I went back to the tab, it was trying to tell me I had a virus.

Edit edit:

section confusion on noon & midnight has an explanation

60 is evenly divisible by 12, 24 is not. Blame analogue clocks.

The real questions are; what happens if you hit 88 mph in a Delorean at the precise moment 11:59:59pm changes to 12:00:00am?  Does the flux capacitor log Marty as leaving in the PM of the previous day, or early am of the next?  Also, would you've been tempted by a young Lea Thompson?

For me it just says 12:00 or 0:00 on all of my watches, computers, and phones. 24h time really simplifies your life.

This is a system modification I've only seen used in Japan. If you're doing things just after midnight, it is easier to think of it as an extension of the day, than as the start of a new one.

Uuh, what? :D

As in we have 12 hours of 12x 5 minutes each?

OT: 12:00 cannot be indicated with either AM or PM, since it is midday itself. Whether you define 00:00 to be AM or PM depends on whether you consider midnight to be the end of one day or the start of the other.

Same as if it’s 11:59pm when it reaches 12

is it 12 pm or 12 am wtf ?

okay, so 00:00 is AM because it stands for ante meridiem, which means "before midday".

12:00 and all hours after midday are PM or "post meridiem"

latin is the basis of this terminology

60 minutes to an hour.

One hour is one full rotation on a clock, for the minute hand.

Every fifth minute mark doubles as an hour mark, making for 12 hours per rotation on the clock, for the hour hand.

Yeah that's what I meant, only worded better. It was just the wording, as if 24 wasn't divisble by 12  :P

Never really thought of it that way.

it's generally indicated by AM or PM, actually.

PM would be "after midday" so it's generally noon that is marked as pm.

If we work past midnight our payroll has to enter 1am as 2500 etc. Something about the shitty software not being smart to recognise we aren't starting a new shift..

AM and PM seems another crazy thing, like measuring thing in feet. In my country we use 00:00 until 23:59. No confusion and you just write the time there's no need to identify it with letters.

Yeah. Also I think our office/payroll staff are a bit simple.

Saying that I find using 24hr time just that bit more simple. Especially when doing shift work like I do and having my roster on a calendar on the fridge.
