Am I stuck with Windows?

Currently I'm running Windows 10, and I just don't like it. It's bloated, annoying, and overall just not a very good experience. However most of the games I play aren't available on Linux.

The main problem with dual booting is that while playing a game, I usually have discord, chrome, spotify, and occasionally other things running on my other two monitors, rebooting every time I want to check on something in a game (which happens more than you'd think) would be a nightmare.

Going exclusively Linux wouldn't work even with wine as my favorite game currently has a "garbage" playability rating with wine.

VMs are an idea I've explored but all the mainstream options I've looked over completely suck for performance.

Am I really just stuck with Windows?

Please rephrase that. I'm really confused. Why do you need to restart the machine just to do that...?

I think they mean they hate windows but can't run the games they want on linux so they would have to log back into windows to play the game.

You could run games on one monitor with your gaming rig and buy a cheap pc to run everything else on linux with the second monitor

Go back to 7. You can still buy a genuine win 7 pro 64 retail copy for like 200-300$. My personal rig runs win 7 on a ryzen cpu and with the user patches it's fucking glorious. I dont care about dx12 and most games still look fine in dx11 to me. Linux is only good for mining. I run my mining rigs on ubuntu or ethos or whatever is best at the time.

That's a very short-tern solution though isn't it, seeing as Windows 7 will no longer get security updates after 2020.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

Have you actually tried the game in WINE?  Its improving all the time and the compatibility list seems to get very few updates, so games marked as garbage may very well work in the current build.

Also depending on how many cores your CPU has you may be able to run Windows virtualised on the second monitor, so you have both Linux and Windows running at the same time.

I currently use the Intel HD Graphics for Linux with my GTX 1070 Ti passed through to the virtual machine, so I can game on my TV in Windows 10 while running Linux on my monitor.  The caveat being that if you do not dedicate CPU cores to the virtual machine, there can be latency issues (as Linux will periodically steal resources from Windows) which in turn can cause HDMI audio to go a bit dodgy.  I do not dedicate cores because I spend 99% of my time doing stuff in Linux so don't want to leave CPU cores idle 99% of the time, but if you game more often it might be worth it.

Also depending on the game, those issues can be minor - for example on South Park Stick of Truth it just caused minor stutters which is a small price to pay to continue working in Linux without having to stop everything and reboot.

I'm running on Intel which is why I didn't have enough cores to spare, if I had known I was going to use it like this I might have gone Ryzen instead.

Linux has plenty of programmes, maybe not the ones YOU want to use, but certainly ones that are perfectly good for a lot of people, me included.

Linux also has plenty of dev teams, especially if you go for something particularly well supported like Ubuntu.

You seem to be forgetting that MacOS is based on top of a third-party core too.

yeah how dare they stop supporting an 11 year old piece of software (at that point)....Snow Leopard for Apple was release in the same year, 2009, and they stopped officially supporting it as of February 2014. that's some entitlement you have there.

EDIT:

Quote

Unsupported as of February 25, 2014 and iTunes ended in September 2014, though the last security update happened in September 2013

It's an old OS and eventually they have to leave it to focus on newer things. This happens with any company. Apple drops support for their older Mac OSX versions for similar reasons. Same thing for Google when it comes to Android.

Stop making excuses for MS. No company deserves to be defended for it's transgressions against the customer. That's why I despise the apple community, valvefags and blizzdrones. Even though I love my iphone. Even though I have a steam account and it's my main form of social media. And even though I grew up on blizzard games. I wont protect the companies when they fuck up.

"making excuses"? under what basis do you think they have to support such an old OS? Windows 7 will still work but just wont get security updates, so if you have such a massive aversion to making the switch to 10, then dont, but that's on you, not MS. They have no purpose to support it any longer than they already have, did you except them to keep it up to date forever? that's not how the world works.

MS tried forcing me and many other people to switch to the horrible 10. They got one of my laptops so thoroughly I had to buy a new one, because I couldn't reuse the win 7 key on the bottom because from what the ms rep on the phone told me; 'It has been converted into a windows 10 product key now sir.' No fuck that. And now MS thinks it can threaten people into upgrading?

i see you have completely ignored everything im saying. they have supported it for 11 years, far beyond what other companies support their software for. how long did you expect they were going to support it? and again, since you're not actually responding to what im saying, and therefore assume you're not actually reading my posts, Windows 7 will still work but just wont get security updates (just like every other piece of software will go through) so it will be up to you to keep your PC safe. if you get infected by something after the end of life of a product, that's on you, not on the software developer. it's clear you have a toxic hate for microsoft, so don't upgrade, no one is forcing you or threatening you to do anything.

But just keep in mind that if someone says "dont go down that alley, its not safe and you might get mugged, it's better to go the new route" and you chose to anyway because the new route isn't convent for you and you do get mugged, that's your fault, not the person that told you, not the city planner, yours.
