Intel 10nm Ice Lake delayed until 2020

Source 1: cj09beira https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/952394-intels-10nm-only-coming-to-servers-in-2020-with-ice-lake/

Source 2: https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/intel_s_hpc_roadmap_places_10nm_ice_lake_release_in_2020/1

  • Intel has released an official HPC roadmap, embedded in a Chinese slide deck, which details the company's release plans from now to 2020 for their Xeon Scalable platform.

  • The roadmap reveals that the company will not be shipping any 10nm Xeon Processors until Q1 or Q2 2020

    • around a year after AMD's release of 7nm (which is roughly equivalent to Intel's 10nm), Zen 2-based EPYC 2 processors

  • In 2019, Intel will be forced to compete with EPYC 2 on today's 14nm technology with Cascade Lake-SP and later Copper Lake-SP processors

    • giving AMD a potential advantage in terms of power efficiency and die size

    • This will in turn give AMD an opportunity to steal market share from Intel within the server market

  • Intel typically uses their latest process technologies on their desktop processors first, moving to large die HPC processors after they achieve optimal processor yield rates.

    • This suggests that Intel's 10nm desktop processors will release sometime in the second half of 2019

    • AMDs 7nm desktop CPUs should also launch in 2019.

AMD reports best quarterly profit in 7 years

  • AMD today reported earnings for the second quarter of 2018

    • revenue of $1.76 billion,

      • up 53 percent year-over-year and 7 percent quarter-over-quarter.

    • operating income of $153 million

    • net income of $116 million

      • compared to $81million in the prior quarter.

      • And a net loss of $42 million a year ago

  • “We had an outstanding second quarter with strong revenue growth, margin expansion and our highest quarterly net income in seven years,” said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO.

    • “Most importantly, we believe our long-term technology bets position us very well for the future. We are confident that with the continued execution of our product roadmaps, we are on an excellent trajectory to drive market share gains and profitable growth.”

  • The year-over-year revenue increase was driven by:

    • higher revenue in both the Computing and Graphics and Enterprise,

    • Embedded and Semi-Custom business segments.

  • Gross margin grew to 37 percent, up 3 percentage points year-over-year, driven by the ramp of new products.

  • Computing and Graphics segment revenue was $1.09 billion, up 64% year-over-year and down 3% quarter-over-quarter.

    • Year-over-year revenue growth was driven by strong sales of Radeon products and continued growth of Ryzen products.

    • The quarter-over-quarter decline was primarily related to lower revenue from GPU products in the blockchain market

Rumour: NVIDIA’s Next-Gen Cards Details

Source 1: AtlasWraith https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/952838-nvidia%E2%80%99s-next-gen-cards-specifications-pricing-and-nomenclature-details/

Source 2: https://wccftech.com/nvidias-next-generation-graphics-cards-specifications-pricing-and-nomenclature-details/

  • Even though the launch of the next generation of Nvidia cards is looming, the naming conventions are still apparently up in the air!

    • not only is the prefix undecided but so is the suffix!

    • the company is actively considering suffixes like XXX5

      • eg GTX 1170 and 1175 or GTX 2070 and 2075

  • The next-generation NVIDIA  lineup will initially have 3 power brackets: 120W, 150W, 180W

    • The 120W, 8GB vRAM card could have the suffix 60/65/70, end or Sept

    • The 150W, 8GB vRAM card could have the suffix 70/75/80 second week of Sept

    • The 180W, 11GB vRAM card could have the suffix 80/85/90 first week of Sept

      • 11 GB of vRAM seems to indicate a bus width of 352-bits

  • NVIDIA does not plan to align the 120W next-gen Turing series GPU with the GTX 1060 at all and will charge accordingly. In the current generation:

    • 120W = 1060

    • 150W = 1070

    • 180W = 1070 Ti, 1080

    • 250W = 1080 Ti

  • Prices for the Next Gen:

    • 120W = $499 MSRP

    • 150W =  $599 MSRP

    • 180W =  $699-749 MSRP

      • NVIDIA is trying to expand the market depth by adding on a higher priced segment in the same market.

      • It appears that instead of entirely replacing the Pascal series, they will introduce a lineup that will fit snugly on top of the same.

      • This would be in contrast to their philosophy before: a complete replacement of old cards

  • At the same time,

    • The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti MSRP will drop in price by $100.

    • The GeForce GTX 1080 MSRP will drop in price by $50.

  • WCCFtech was told that the manufacturing cost for these cards is barely below the MSRP

  • Nvidia will not have enough graphics cards to meet demand.

Source 3: https://www.cnet.com/news/apple-macbook-pro-speed-throttling-patch-tested/

  • On Tuesday Apple released a bug fix for 2018 MacBook Pros to address an issue that caused the machines to excessively throttle when doing system-intensive tasks.

    • "Following extensive performance testing under numerous workloads, we've identified that there is a missing digital key in the firmware that impacts the thermal management system and could drive clock speeds down under heavy thermal loads on the new MacBook Pro,"

    • The fix came as a supplemental update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

  • before-and-after video encoding testing done by CNET shows no more CPU throttling in the Core i9 MacBook Pro, with the clock frequency of the cPU and internal system temperature remaining stable.

  • Apple has issued an apology to customers who experienced less than optimal performance on their new 2018 machines.

  • Anthony’s testing shows no performance change in Windows, indicating it was not a firmware patch :o

  • Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg were sued today over a disappointing earnings announcement that resulted in the loss $120 billion of shareholder wealth.

    • marking the biggest one-day loss in U.S. market history

  • The shareholder-filed complaint accused Facebook, Zuckerberg and CFO David Wehner of making misleading statements about or failing to disclose:

    • slowing revenue growth,

    • falling operating margins,

    • and declines in active users.

  • The plaintiff said the marketplace was “shocked” when “the truth” began to emerge on Wednesday. He said the 19% plunge in Facebook shares the next day stemmed from federal securities law violations by the defendants.

    • After the Cambridge Analytica news in March, the stock fell 17.8%

  • Zuckerberg was tied with Warren Buffett as the world’s fourth-richest person, but now:

    • Buffet: $83 billion

      • Zuck’s personal loss alone exceeds the value of companies such as Molson Coors and Macy's

  • "The market seems to be questioning the quality of growth seen in the past."

    • An additional  28,411 accounts were banned the following morning.

  • It’s possible the wave was caused by the system identifying a previously unknown cheat

  • The company’s zero-tolerance policy means their ban will never be overturned.

    • Yes, they can open a new account, but they’ll need to link it with a different phone number and buy games all over again.

Mozilla executive claims that Google has made YouTube slower on Edge and Firefox

Source 1: Good_Bytes https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/952117-google-makes-youtube-much-slower-for-firefox-and-edge/

Source 2: https://www.neowin.net/news/mozilla-executive-claims-that-google-has-made-youtube-slower-on-edge-and-firefox

  • Early last year, YouTube received a design refresh with Google's own Polymer library which enabled "quicker feature development" for the platform.

  • Now, Mozilla's Technical Program Manager claims that YouTube is around five times slower on browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Mozila Firefox.

    • He says the Polymer redesign relies heavily on the deprecated Shadow DOM v0 API, which is only available in Chrome.

  • There are some workarounds

    • the use of extensions to restore the pre-Polymer version of YouTube.

    • offering the older version of YouTube to users on affected browsers, which is what Google does for Internet Explorer 11.

  • A Google spokesperson said the company found that overall YouTube performance on Firefox is the same as it has been since the site redesign, based on the latest metrics

  • Chrome is the most popular web browser and accounts for 59% of website usage

    • Firefox has 5%

    • Edge has 2%

Source 1: AluminiumTech https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/952643-fortnite-for-android-might-be-a-timed-exclusive-for-samsung-galaxy-note-9-upon-release/

    • Pre-order August 14th

    • public availability August 24th

  • So if Fortnite is exclusive to the Note 9 for a month, late September (23rd?) seems to be the likely launch timeframe for the rest of us

  • Galaxy Note 9 users will also get the choice of $100-$150 worth of V-Bucks for in-game use OR wireless AKG headphones

Source 2:

  • Inmates in Idaho successfully hacked the software of prison-issued tablets to issue themselves nearly a quarter of a million dollars in credits

    • 50 inmates were able to issue themselves credits for more than $1,000.

    • One self-issued a credit of almost $10,000.

    • The company has recovered about a quarter of the total of around $225,000 so far and has suspended some functions for inmates until they reimburse the stolen credits.

  • The individuals exploiting the JPay system are incarcerated at a handful of Idaho prisons

  • the software vulnerability has since been resolved.

But seriously, I love those rants at the beginning. Tech news are everywhere mostly the same - this is what distinguishes you from the rest. Thanks!

Well don't start with this week's, because they talked for over half an hour and then realized they hadn't discussed a single tech topic yet.  Then they spent 10 minutes on sponsors. xD

I usually don't have comments to these, but this time...

First the name spelling thing. If Linus would have it pronounced as its supposed in Scandinavian/Swedish way, this would be issue. With current American/English way it sounds more like Lienus. With Swedish way with long i instead ie (just like you would pronounce Linux, but with long i), Its Liinus.

Second is Package Manager re-branding. Imo thats not the problematic part, just don't let people who know nothing about marketing (maybe 70% of stream viewers) do it. Also as Linux very rarely has paid software, word "Store" should not be used. Sadly, word "library" also can't be used as it refers to something else in software devs minds. Maybe "Selector" instead of "Store" and then have some defining word. Imo "Package" isn't that bad, but as mainstream wouldn't understand word "application" either... I'm not marketing person and I hope who ever eventually pulls the trigger is wiser than those who re-branded local convention center (from Helsinki Convention Center to just Convention Center, worst re-branding ever).

The bigger issue with how software and stuff are handled are the words "repository" and "distro". They both would need to be re-branded to more appealing for general public. Distro could be just "flavor" or even "version" while latter isn't really accurate.

I stopped watching live when time-slot was shifted to 1am local time and they had massive audio issues (time before I had DAC so even when cranked volume to 100, I couldn't hear anything in noisy environment). If only Linus had had sense to seek more professional quality of live shows back then by hiring producer/audio expert (they still lack both). Producer could be helpful in normal content also and audio expert would improve event coverage too (which still is hit&miss in that section). So in short I watch them in Twitch Archives next day. Tbh you don't loose much. Tech news part of it has become the most boring part. When they talk about BTS stuff or have guests to talk about other stuff, those are most interesting shows. So if you want to loose your WANirginity, watch the show few weeks back with Jay, Louis Rossmann and Wendel. Or one few years ago with Barnacules (or one from 2013 with Tom Logan of OC3D).

think audio checks out nowadays...? o_o I mean from a playback point of view, but for production then arguably there's more to be done (which I don't think it's needed to be honest)

Back in the day audio was all over the place. This refers time pre-2016.

(unless you mean like producer producer: isn't that Edzel's job o_0 or is that Linus's scope)

I don't think Edzel has been referred as producer once. He's production manager which is completely different job. He keeps in tack of projects, their status and whose working on what etc. I mean producer who would personally oversee major releases and WAN Show. As in read script, be present in filming and view edits before content gets released. Of my understanding that traditional position of film/TV industry is held by Linus for overseeing scripting and LTT parts of filming/editing, writer of each piece and shooter/editor. Linus being overworked by all, no wonder why there are mistakes. Dedicated person would help to avoid those. Now its editors job to make sure final release works as Linus sees the RC version (one before final checks). This from what they have talked about procedure.

If you look at other bigger YT companies, each channel has producer. Can be single if content is somewhat simple (Hi5 studios from those I have watched) or multiple when there are several different content styles going on (Fine Brothers).

Live event manning would be a cost issue though, especially with out-of-country coverage because air tickets and equipment. Also there's not much you could do in a blasty environment other than to keep the right kind of mic as close to the speaker as possible ._.

I don't mean actual interviews or floor content. Those have been as good as expected. But volume gain difference between pre-roll ads and actual content has been horrible in some events.

It seems to be better now, and I can't find the videos I had issues with. From searching my complaints, its supposed to be CES2015, which has incredible loud pre-roll ad.
