Do I Really Need a 1080 TI?

So I am building a new Gaming computer... I want to be able to game at at least 60 FPS at 1080p without problem... I don't really play AAA titles but I would like to sooner or later... I mainly just play World of Warcraft, Minecraft, Team Fortress 2, Gmod, and a lot of indie games. I like high quality in my games so MAX settings... Money isn't an issue but I don't want to spend a fortune if I don't have to. Tell me if a GTX 1080 Ti is a bit too overkill or if I should do 2 in SLI... just tell me what you reccommend... here is the build

Seriously, a 1070 Ti or 1080 is already pretty overkill for 1080p.

1080ti is a waste of money for what youre using it for.

 

I'd do a 1070, though maybe wait a month to see what Nvidia has up their sleeve.

 

You dont even need that, if youre playing those "lower quality" games, a 1060 would do fine

You might as well just get the 1080ti when you are custom water cooling everything. The money you spent there more than enough pays for the higher tier card, just my opinion.

I wouldn’t go custom loop of I were you. I would save the money and get a 1060. Then when NVIDIA drops new GPUS in August or September buy a high end one

Custom water cooling is - arguably - perfect for looks. That being said, buying an AIO from a reputable brand is a good alternative for a custom loop.

For your graphics card: the ASUS Strix 1060 6 GB has a very decent air cooler that is even capable of cooling the card while being overclocked. Just don't go for the 1060 3GB version.

Get basically anything except the Armor and you'll be fine for rocking max overclocks at good temps on a 1060. A 1060 is really all you need for 1080p, and you can upgrade easily to the next generation which should release in the next 6ish months at a very conservative guess

Never mind the GPU, the custom loop and CPU also feel pretty overkill if it's just for gaming.  Was that something you wanted just because you could, or did you think it was needed for this class of build?  Even if you stuck with the 2700x it's not really going to push an AIO or high end air cooler that hard, and both of those suggested options will be easier to maintain.

I Thought I would need it to overclock the crap out of both the graphics card and the CPU... but If I can overclock the Asus GTX 1060 without it being too hot and can overclock a Ryzen 7 2700x pretty hard with just an AIO I think I'll scrap the Custom Watercooling... I was pretty scared of the hardline water tubing anyway.

Yeah, open loops are a pretty big undertaking, not just at the time of building it but afterwards with maintenance.  Ryzen actually runs pretty cool, likely when you go to OC you will be limited by power/voltage instead of heat.

Only reason I would suggest a 1070ti over a 1060 is because they're actually priced fairly due to being the most freshly stocked.  So if you want to overkill a little bit I could see you going that way if you want to leave a little bit of headroom.

Rest assured, as others and myself have already mentioned:

- the ASUS GTX 1060 Strix can be overclocked perfectly fine without the card getting too hot (obviously under normal conditions... e.g. don't suffocate the card etc.).

- Ryzen CPUs run fairly cool. Therefore, if you get a decent AIO, you'll be able to overclock the CPU as you like.

If you already bought all those custom watercooling equipment, it would be a waste to use them on anything below a 1070 Ti in my opinion.

However for the games you're playing at 1080p......even a 1050 Ti would be way more than enough.

 

You really should upgrade your monitor to a 1440p one at least.
