Agreed an 8700 is going to be better than a 5ghz 8600K in the long run.

Then a 8600K is enough. Better single core performance

8700 needs good mobo and cooler too, just like unlocked CPUs

the 8600K, get it a Noctua NH-U12S or 14S then you will have a CPU and cooler combo for less than the 8700 (with the U14S a bit more over 8700)

I think your misstaken. 8600k needs better mobo for overclock or its a waste of money.

8700 just needs a basic tower cooler for 20$ and a B360 board.

Not every mobo can handle the turbo clock speed and heat properly

Depends on your usage, for gaming as of now i5 should suffice but.. after 2-3 years it might be hard for it to handle. i7 on the other hand is kind of good all-rounder and also you can skip the z series chipset or get it for future use. Games are starting to utilise more than 4 cores nowadays especially since ryzen is released as they are the first cpu more than 4 cores for regular person. So in the future those extra 6 threads might give you and advantage over OCed 6c/6t processor.

Why, though? The 8600K maxes out around 5GHz, which is barely higher than the 8700's turbo frequency. In the end you won't feel the difference. That, plus the cheaper boards you can run the locked chips on, makes the 8600K rather poor value both now and in the long run.

for gaming alone, that's $100 more for very similar performance
