Lenovo Z5 Was a Lie

Quote

Lenovo has been hyping up a new phone called the Z5 over the past few weeks, posting sketches and renders that hinted at a truly all-screen design free from bezels and notches. Well, the Z5 just got unveiled in Beijing and... I'm afraid there's bad news.

Yeah, I don't normally care about phone news (unless it's the Pixel or when I'm actually thinking of upgrading), but I DO care about tech giants lying about a product and then releasing a completely different thing.

Anyways, not a long post here, just haven't seen any news being posted here and I am sure that some people care about this stuff. Sources have more information if you'd like (yes, WCCFTECH hate and all that, but they at least reported this after the fact, and the main article is from The Verge if you want that).

to be honest I didn't buy that spec rumor at all. how much does a 1TB SSD cost? (let alone the 4TB difference in a phone)

Still three big lies about the phone

This was all based of a sketch of a prototype design not a drawing of the final design. The Weibo image also was different showing it was still being designed.

Did you even see the Sketches and renderings?

Sketch had the base design, yeah not a notch but thats all it is, a concept sketch. And rendering? The render was the back of the phone and a corner crop that doesnt zoom out far enough to even show the notch.

Saying their lying is a bit much

I'm disappointed but not surprised. Unless Lenovo has literal magic I don't think they'd have a camera behind the panel yet.

There's at least 1 phone with a pop-out front facing camera and it wouldn't be totally ridiculous to imagine someone making a phone without a front facing camera. I know I've never used mine.

I figured most adult (not adolescent) males don't use it.

Although I don't believe a vast majority of people use their front facing camera, I still don't believe a phone manufacturer would leave it out. In east Asia whole phones are marketed off the back of their front facing camera. You just cut off too much of your potential market not including it, put I do think Kendo was overstating selfie camera use when he said you were in the 'vast minority'

You'd be surprised. Video calling is a big thing for a bunch of the guys I know with their lady friends. Even for myself, I don't use it very often but it does come in handy as a grainy make-do mirror if I need, or as a way to take photos of something under a fixture like a model number/serial number tag.

I do  think it's more of a case that people would go "Oh I use that sometimes. This phone doesn't have it? Skip." than it is a case of people legitimately needing it, but a manufacturer isn't going to want to lose out on any market segment just to pick up a bit of niche.

I typically don't use it but I have used it in the past. I would think it's probably the same for alot of adult males. I mean I honestly hardly ever use my headphone jack on my phone but I still won't buy a phone that doesn't have one because I want the option to use it.

Ok, for anyone that is thinking "it's just a notch, let me point you to this little piece here:

Quote

Prior to its release, the Lenovo Z5 was touted as an all-screen smartphone without any bezels or notch and if you take a look at the image below, that is what Lenovo was bragging about all this time. However, it does have a notch and a chin bezel at the bottom.

The key part here being that it ALSO has a chin bezel, whereas the original marketing for this phone has it as having almost no chin at all.

Disappointing, not surprising...the mobile space is one of the worst for rumors and hype trains. People jump to way too many conclusions, and it seems like tech sites just relist the same dream spec year after year. Have you ever seen how often "under display finger print reader" has been used for an S series device? Pretty sure it was rumored on the 7, 8, and 9. Of course it never materialized. People are also great at making their own render images. It's not hard these days with a little Photoshop skill.

Personally, I'd prefer a notch over the leak that showed the camera and chin only on the bottom of the device.

At least it's extremely cheap. With the spec, it's not bad value.

Battery quote was standby time, which could be true. They could have done some coding magic. The 4TB is an HDD they released. Could easily have been a translation error. Anyone who thought we'd jump from 1TB to 4TB in a phone really needs to give their head a shake.

It was all a attention grap, they'll write a bunch of shit and the media, general consumers and YouTubers will get the word out that Lenovo are trying to expand their smartphone market share.

Oh yah, that was obviously the case but I still expected better than this. The price seems pretty low though, if the camera is any good I might actually buy one to replace my LG G6 because its kinda shit

Well, on the positive side, their marketing gimmick got everybody talking about the phone. On the negative side, you now have disappointed consumers who are turned off and that will have an impact on sales.
