RED is already planning on accessories for its Hydrogen One Phone - First up, an 8K 3D Camera

RED announced their Hydrogen One phone a while ago, and it has some pretty neat features, such as a holographic display and such.
However, one thing was noted on the RED phone and that was some contact pins, presumably for expansion modules, much like their expensive Cinema Cameras.

And today, we are seeing one of many new attachments for the phone, in this case, a Dual 4K Synced Camera expansion that can produce 8K 3D videos, viewable on the phones "Holographic" display,

or can be exported to be viewed on YouTube/Facebook or RED's own content hub.

RED is partnering with company "Lucid" to produce such an expansion, 

Lucid CEO Han Jin noted:

The new camera will use RED's hardware and camera design chops, and carry the same look as other RED models. At the same time it will pack Lucid's real-time 3D Fusion tech to stitch the images together into files compatible with the Hydrogen One. The smartphone can be dropped into the new camera to act as a display for it, letting users "view the content immediately in 3D/4V without headsets.

Not much is known spec-wise about the new Hydrogen One phone, but what we do know is it will have a 5.7" QHD Screen, Snapdragon 835, 4500mAh battery, a Type-c Port
AND A HEADPHONE JACK!!

You'll be able to buy the phone from RED direct, Verizon or AT&T.

(No word yet on the availability in the international market, unfortunately)

My Thoughts?
Sound cool, however - if you're going to pay for such an experience, why not just get a normal phone and a RED camera with accessories?

I say this as I assume - it ain't gonna be cheap considering its RED...


After reading the article, it looks like the phone will act more like a display than a "brain" for the new expansion - so perhaps its just a standalone unit that supports the phone as an expansion to it, and not vice versa?
I could be totally wrong, and if I am, I can't imagine the Snapdragon 835 being powerful enough to drive such an expansion, so perhaps it has a co-processor? Who knows.

 

All I can say is it looks really interesting.

It's an interesting phone, but we all know that you and I aren't the target market.

 

It's too specialized for the average Joe and even some enthusiasts. This phone targets specifically towards existing RED customers and it also acts more as a showcase device.

This is cool as hell! Perhaps RED can properly realize motorolas vision of modular phone. RED are the people who understand marketing cutting edge tech and bringing something seemingly ludicrious and prograde to amateurs. My wallet is ready for RED Lithium

Because its technically 8K. its not 4320p which would be 8K in standard 16:9. 8K is measured in the whith.

Modular phones have already been tried and people didn't buy them. An 8K 3D camera is going to cost more than 4 grand. Try $15K+. Then you need somewhere to store it that supports high enough bandwidth. Which I highly doubt the phone can support or has not enough storage. It would have made a lot more sense if they marketed it as a smart monitor module rather than a phone

If anyone can realize that vision, red can, but my question to you is why that vision is good? Who needs a modular phone? The way I see modular when it comes to many markets is you didn't get a powerful enough device to do what you needed and bought accessories to make up for the difference. This is prevalent in laptops. People buy a $200 computer because it's $200 and then they buy an external drive for storage, a dock for external monitors, and multiple hubs and dongles to host their list of devices, not to mention the software they need but can't run because they got a crappy pc or heaven forbid a chromebook that can't even install those programs. People like to buy in pieces like this and I don't get it. It's more expensive that way. Just give me a decent product from the go

Tbh, no clue, just seems cool. Motorolas modules for the x are useless for the most part, except the projector one perhaps, but i still like the idea. Getting side functionality is cool although i have hard time imagining several modules id like to buy

One red camera and a phone wouldn't be the same as this, it wouldn't be 3D neither the holographic display (that I don't know how good it is)
