Do you agree with EA regarding single player games?

Tcrumpen

EA thinks that people don't want single player games anymore

This video goes into a nice bit of detail about how wrong EA are

My opinion is that people don't want BAD single player games; which is what a large majority of games being released nowadays are (God of War is the only single player game that springs to mind that has good single-player gameplay resealed in the last year by big AAA companies)

Depends what type of game it is.

There's such a wide variety of game genres around that it's impossible to say one or the other as a general rule.

I'd agree with it for some genres, like first person shooter games. Most are basically multi-player with a single player mode slapped on.

Single player campaigns are all I still play because I no longer can endure toxicity of e-sports titles, nor the huge amount of cheaters these games have.

Plenty of people still enjoy challenging themselves, as well as getting wrapped up in a good story. Also, there are some genres and gameplay styles that simply don't work as multiplayer games. The most memorable games are almost always single player games, or for their single player component. So, no, EA is dead wrong.

People love single player games. Going on a well crafted journey on an adventure through a narrative with intrigue and exposition providing player motivation for the gameplay objectives is truly compelling.

However there is less opportunity to monetise it, people pay one time then play through it and stop. So obviously to companies like EA it's  more attractive to make something which can keep people playing for months which allows you to monetize them over a period of time.

EA doesn't think people like singleplayer games? Hmm... I wonder why they could have thought that?

EA management has no clue what they're doing. Look at Battlefront, Battlefront 2, Need For Speed Payback, Mass Effect Andromeda, etc.

EA just say what they think will justify the business path they're already decided on. If EA wants to do loot boxes, then they're going to say that people don't want single-player games so that they can create MP games and add loot-boxes to them. It's not what people want, but it's what rationalizes whatever EA want to do.

I don't agree with them. However they're not wrong. Let me explain:

People don't want the kind of lazy, formulaic, uninspired single player games EA has produced. The thing is that they are capable of producing good single player games. They have certainly showed via the people on the studios they've acquired over the years.

But the problem is that this is a bigger investment now. They have painted themselves into a corner of always prioritizing looks and technology and it is now too expensive and they have to dedicate most of their resources to that instead. Not only that but good single player games take far, far longer to develop and they have decided on a yearly schedule.

What EA was really trying to say is that they have made far more money and more easily by making multiplayer focused games to the point they want to do multiplayer only. In fact the least resources they invest even on multiplayer games the better so expect things like "Battle royale" and other stupid and gimmicky modes to dominate.
