Taking the plunge to Ryzen.

Go to solution Solved by Crunchy Dragon,

My requirements are:

  • Must have at least 1 M.2 slot
  • Must have 4 DIMM slots for RAM
  • Must have at least one PCIe 1x slot that won't be covered by a dual slot graphics card in a 16x slot
  • Must have support for Ryzen (Obviously)
  • Would like to have decent on board audio but not essential
  • Would prefer full sized ATX if possible
  • A pump header for the CPU would be nice
  • USB 3.1 and type C is important to me

I know it's a bit much, but yeah.

Say I had £90 or so to spend, what could I get? :/

ASRock AB350-Pro4. Has everything you're looking for except the CPU pump header, but you can always use a normal case fan header for that.

I got this board back in January and I really like it.

Hey all!

I have decided to take the plunge and am planning on buying a Ryzen 3 2200G to replace my weak and clunky Core i3 550.

I have nothing I need to know other than one thing;

Has anyone noticed ANYTHING about the Ryzen processors that I should watch out for?  Anything that might put me off buying one? Anything that I might want to take into consideration?

Please let me know!  I want to be 100% sure that this is a better idea than something from Intel at a similar price, as I have a very limited budget, and this seems like the best option to me.

(I'm off to bed now, but I'll check back in the morning!)

Thanks in advance!

The biggest stickler for people is that Ryzen has less single thread performance than recent Intel CPUs, by a margin of 10-30% depending on generation and SKU. For 60hz gaming, this really isn't a problem... however for high refresh rate gaming, this becomes an issue.

However, in your case in particular this is a non-issue as the Vega GPU inside of the Ryzen 2200G will be the bottleneck in the vast majority of cases.

Are you wanting the chip with integrated GPU because you aren't planning on getting a graphics card?

I have been happy with my Ryzen CPU. Can't really say anything bad about it.

So I'm assuming that you don't have a dGPU at the moment so you want the G series so you can at least use the machine?

If you do have a dGPU don't bother with a G series risen chip. Also the next gen of Ryzen chips are coming out soon (pre orders have started) so you might want to wait to see what they have to offer.

Make sure the board you're getting supports it. Honestly, I'd wait a bit until all boards have a BIOS that'll let you use the chip from the factory.

Ryzen is picky with memory. Make sure what you buy is supported.

As others have mentioned, only get that SKU if you don't have a GPU. Otherwise, just wait a couple weeks for the new line to emerge.

I figured that I should've mentioned this xD

I do have a GPU (A GTX 960) but the reason I am going for the G series chip is because the G series one is actually cheaper than the 1200 (which was my other choice) on my favourite computer parts site here in the UK (At least at the time of posting).  And apparently (At least from my research) the 2200G actually performs better than the 1200 due to it's higher clock speed and whatnot.

2200G:

https://www.cclonline.com/product/247355/YD2200C5FBBOX/CPU-Processors/AMD-Ryzen-3-2200G-3-5GHz-Quad-Core-Processor-with-Radeon-Vega-8-Graphics-65W-6MB-Cache-3-7GHz-Turbo-Wraith-Stealth-Cooler-/CPU0535/

1200:

https://www.cclonline.com/product/237108/YD1200BBAEBOX/CPU-Processors/AMD-Ryzen-3-1200-3-1GHz-65W-4-Core-4-Thread-Socket-AM4-Processor-with-Wraith-Stealth-Cooler/CPU0477/

Performance comparison:

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-3-2200G-vs-AMD-Ryzen-3-1200/m441832vs3931

So, I would've gone for the 1200, but why would I when I can get the better 2200G for cheaper?  And it also give's me redundancy if my graphics card dies...

Sorry about that, I should've mentioned that, but I was tired and I had a hospital appointment this morning so I had to be up early.

And because of my tight budget, and current awful CPU, I want to upgrade as soon as possible.  (I will have saved up enough by around July)

I would recommend against getting that B350, it isn't really that good. Go for the Pro4, AB350 Gaming K4, ASUS Strix B350, or B350 Gaming Pro Carbon (this one is mostly for the bling factor).

The K4 certainly seems like an option, my only issue being that I was hoping to get an MSI board.

You see, I'm an audiophile, and until I can get a good sound card, I was hoping to use MSI's excellent on board audio and software. :/

Problem is, MSIs VRMs this generation are really terrible unless you invest to something like the B350 KRAIT or CARBON, which are way out of your budget.

Problem is, MSIs VRMs this generation are really terrible unless you invest to something like the B350 KRAIT or CARBON, which are way out of your budget.

GAHHH!!!  It's so difficult to choose!!!

But I guess that's what the forum is for, and I kinda brought it on myself by asking for help xD

Is there a thread you know of recommending good boards or anything?

This is a nightmare...
