I just picked up an Rx 580 nitro + 4gb for 300 CAD (about 240 usd) from a gamer, I'll probably try for a cheap 1080 in a couple weeks and give the Rx to my brother.

Man I'm glad I bought my RX 470 when I did last year, specifically around March of last year. Although I wished I would've gone for a 480 8GB and then sold it for some mad profit (probably more than I could've sold my 470 when it reached a cap) but my current system requires a GPU

On a more serious note, about time things started to turn around.  Right now a NIB GPU at a $100-200 above MSRP is considered a good deal.  Used and 35% under MSRP might be worth the gamble.

i pretend on picking one, but only way below MSRP. These cards were abused for months and can die at any moments, besides i don't want to give my money to the crypto idiots so they can return their investment and are at it again in a couple of months. Let them lose a lot of money so they learn their lesson.

Mining cards are fine to use. Constant low temperature and low voltage operation is about as good as it gets without not ever turning the card on. Gaming in comparison is atrocious for your card

This is what I was thinking. Is there any risk of damage from low voltage operation. 

 

I would think any reasonable miner (lol) would be trying to maximize profit and get cost down as much as possible.

I would think any reasonable miner (lol) would be trying to maximize profit and get cost down as much as possible. 

The cards do of course have a lifespan but if it’s a non-crap PCB and the temps were good then it’s just like buying a used gaming card.

 

What damages circuits is rapid cooling and heating cycles. 

 

There are of course people who just plugged in the cards and let them run at 85C with no tuning and bad airflow. Those will fail sooner but I still believe that the card will be no longer super relevant by the time it dies.

Electrically you're not going to damage a card by undervolting by itself.  Your biggest risk is pushing the voltage too low and being unstable.  It might invalidate your results.

 

Miners are all about economics and power is a big deal.  You pay double for overclocking - once for the energy to run the card and again to keep your electronics cool (unless you're north of the arctic circle.

 

It's the basement miners I'd worry about

What currency is used in Antarctica? You can find a 1080 cheaper than that in the US.

I'm from the u.s most 1070s are about 560 to 600
