Suggestion on upgrading to 7700k or wait for intel's 9th Gen

Go to solution Solved by LienusLateTips,

6700 = 7700K without OC and lower clock.

Near zero difference.

Switch to Ryzen + or wait till 9th gen/Zen 2

Hi,

Thanks for your time on reading my post :)

Currently I'm using intel's 6700 cpu with gigabyte z170x gaming 7. I know you are bit surprised why the hack I have a non K 6th Gen chip with Z170 board!!! Short summary - "Lack of knowledge, fear of overcloking" O.o.

Now I want to OC the hell out of an unlocked chip with a decent cooler of course ( like corssair  H100i V2 or MasterLiquid 240).

More information of my specs are below:

Monitor: Asus VX229H ( 1080p, 74Hz)

RAM: Ripjaws V 16GB - 2400 MHz

PSU: Cooler master V650

Bootdrive: Adata 128GB SSD

By keeping above gear the same, should I sell my 6700 and  buy 7700K with  above mentioned cooler? Or should I wait for intel's 9th gen chip and upgrade the whole system.

Thanks and best regards. Have a good day.

I would just wait on Intel's/AMD's next generation chips. 6700 to 7700K isn't much of an upgrade and you may as well save your money for higher core count chips at the same IPC.

Going to Ryzen would yield at best a sidestep in IPC with more cores. There's little point especially since the next gen chips will be coming later this year.

Main Rig: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) KLEVV CRAS XR RGB DDR4-3600 | Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX | Storage: 512GB SKHynix PC401, 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, 2x Micron 1100 256GB SATA SSDs | GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB | Cooling: ThermalTake Floe 280mm w/ be quiet! Pure Wings 3 | Case: Sliger SM580 (Black) | PSU: Lian Li SP 850W

Server: CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100 | RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) Crucial DDR4 Pro | Motherboard: ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS AC-HES | Storage: 128GB Samsung PM961, 4TB Seagate IronWolf | GPU: AMD FirePro WX 3100 | Cooling: EK-AIO Elite 360 D-RGB | Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow (White) | PSU: Seasonic Focus GM-850

Miscellaneous: Dell Optiplex 7060 Micro (i5-8500T/16GB/512GB), Lenovo ThinkCentre M715q Tiny (R5 2400GE/16GB/256GB), Dell Optiplex 7040 SFF (i5-6400/8GB/128GB)

If all you're interested in is overclocking, then a CPU upgrade may not be a bad idea. But if the end goal is to maximize the performance and minimize the long term investments... then wait for the mainstream unlocked 8 cores of Ice Lake or Cannon Lake or whenever it rolls around. with the pressure AMD has put on Intel for cores it won't be too far over the hill... next gen and more cores will mean more return on investment. the 7700k is, basically, just a faster 6700k. IPC and structure is essentially identical. Next gen should carry IPC improvements (8000 series is also still running on skylake IPC). So waiting for a platform which will offer core count increase, IPC increase, and likely an outright clockspeed increase should net the most bang for your buck.

Of course that's a relative term. It could easily be 6 months or a year from now. Up to you if you want to wait.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Just saw Ryzen 2 's leaked news. I might go for team red next year .For now I have to have some experience on cpu overclocking. So I might buy a used 7700k if I find a good deal.

The i7-6700 is still a very capable chip, and I don't think there's no need to upgrade to a 7700K. I suggest you upgrade to an 8700K because it's a much more substantial upgrade, or wait until 10nm, 8 cores mainstream Ice Lake chips. Or even see if there will be any HEDT Coffee Lake CPUs and go for it. That's your choice, but just don't buy a 7700K.

Hi,
Thanks. I know Ryzen support OC :D. I think I'll wait to see ryzen 2 and intel's 9th gen's war and then decide.

Thanks and much appreciated.

Hi ,

Thanks for your reply.

I am using Gigabyte 970 Xtream Gaming. So your saying I will not have any noticable difference with at least 4.7 GHz in 7700K? :/

No, since the 970 is roughly equivalent to the 1060 3GB, unless the task is extremely CPU bound.

Hi,
Thanks for your suggestion. I'm not planning to go for 8700K because that will cost me more( new mobo, new RAM).
I'll wait. Appreciate the help.

That V650 is totally adequate for any operations with Ryzen. Ryzen's TDP only ranges from 65-95W just like Intel, so no worries.

Near zero difference ? Are you stoned ?

How can you surgest ryzen over Intel if u don't no what he is usin the pc for

if it's gaming the 6700 will still beat ryzen 2700x

op, you should get a 8700k and a delidding tool and a z370 board and get a ballin 5.2 ghz oc stable for everyday use

its better that ryzen or matches in all work loads and destroys it in gaming

Hi,
Thanks for replying.

I use this system for gaming only.  8700k was not an option 'cuz I would have to buy new motherboard and RAM. I've decided to save money for now to see new gen cpu from both team.
