30/12=2.5 billion/month

2.5bn/40m=62.5$/month

I mean they did not say per se that it would be for the year 2025. The verge article is worded poorly there and as you said, the other one is paying so yeah. So no more information there. 

And also, third world countries doesnt mean that there is no one there thats able to pay for these services. It just means that overall their economy is so bad or poorly managed that they cant actually afford to build internet infrastructures.

Typically you can call and ask, or you can look for it. If it is relitively close, and you are willing to pay for them to run it, they can run a custom drop. Then you just pay for the bandwidth you want every month.

Are you talking like DSLAM or connection to another ISP? It would be $43,000 to bury a hookup to Charter 3/4 mile away

you would be surprised how good 4G is in third-world countries... they can't afford to build infrastructure themselves, true... but.. the Chinese can. Which is what they are doing. Companies such as Huawei are investing heavily in african countries and such, laying down fiber, building datacentres and offering cheap, reliable 4G.

 

In Europe we are also doing heavy investments in fiber and such. Seems US is the only country being left behind :P nothing new

Lol no not DSLAM. Well for example. Me personally I have 5/5 fiber. Prior to that my best option was 3Mb/s for $115 a month. I had ATT run a custom fiber connection from their node, but I had to pay for them to run it from the node to my house or it would have never happened. I only pay $97 a month because I was willing to fit the bill for the run and they didn't have to worry about recouping the cost of the run.

Those satellites are in geostationary orbit, about 22,000 miles (35,000km) up. These will actually have a latency of around 25-35ms according to SpaceX since they'll only be at 511km. sauce

those are the test ones. Bit further it says "although the operational satellites are planned to orbit at altitudes ranging from 1,110km to 1,325km."

Still, a 70,000 km round trip is 28 times longer than a 2500km round trip, so if geostationary internet gives you like 600ms, then SpaceX's 25-35 is still reasonable (assuming one is directly overhead). I'd be a customer, even if it was twice that.

I still feel 4G/5G would be the better investment, I just see sooooooo many issues with this new musk-esk idea. It's... ok? but... space junk? we are already struggling  with that and preparing to spend billions to clean it up. Do we really need more junk up there?

Yeah, I pay $70/month for 12/1, which is the best I can get even though I'm just outside Houston (It's just growing too fast for infrastructure to keep up). 5G should be gigabit/1ms, so really fast, but the range isn't great and is affected by buildings much more. and I'd expect Musk to get 4000+ satellites in space faster than I'd expect Verizon to get a tower close enough to me. :)

I do have a major connection running in my ditch that's like 50gig fiber but it's between backbones I think. How would I talk to someone or see a map of the local connections? Local technician?

quick maths mate. Sure somebody will get the 40$ plan and another person the 80$ plan. Though at the end of the day it's still 62.5$/month on average. :)

Yes but it does mean that some of the options could be more affordable. And who knows maybe they will offer really good speeds at those prices.

so for all satellite internet has costed a fortune for not much, so I doubt this will extremely affordable. But time will tell.

I guess this is nice because ISPs in the US seem to really not want to provide some places, and for less developed countries as well this can be great. Latency is going to be absolutely garbage ofc but its probably fine unless you play online games

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I can't wait for this to get set up. I'm in one of those lovely parts of the US with isps 'competing' in completely different segments and that ends up with situations like mine. Comcast and CenturyLink are the two choices. CenturyLink covers 5mbps and below and Comcast covers everything above, up to 200mbps. However, Comcast has decided they won't service us, so our only choices are 5mbps from CenturyLink for almost $50 a month. 

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

Assuming that it's a steady 80-130 that's perfectly fine for non-twitch games, and even okay but not great for twitch games on a non-competitive level. The real issue is how steady of a signal will such a network give.
